President addresses 65th session
of the UN General Assembly
(Asiantribune.com - 24/09/10) - Sri
Lanka can only wish the Sri Lanka’s
Tamils more good fortune than any
other nation on earth emphasized, Sri
Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
President Mahinda Rajapaks was
addressing the 65th session of United
Nations General Assembly at the UN
Headquarters in New York yesterday
(Sep 23) said that the entire focus of
our nation, is now on building a lasting
peace; healing wounds, ensuring
economic prosperity and guaranteeing
the rights of the whole nation to live in
harmony.
He added , “A great deal has been said
by those beyond our borders about our
Tamil community. Let me be clear, no
nation on earth can wish Sri Lanka’s
Tamil community more good fortune
than Sri Lanka itself.”
Sri Lankan President pointed out that
“The LTTE was an organization so
brutal, that even those it claimed to
represent, the Tamil community of Sri
Lanka, were as much victims of its
terror as the rest of the population of
our country.
But he said, “I would like to remind you
that we, along with many others, made
repeated attempts to engage the LTTE
in constructive dialogue. I still believe
dialogue is the best method to resolve
any conflict but, it is much to be
regretted that all these attempts were
rejected with reckless arrogance and
contempt. It is in these circumstances
that we were compelled to mount a
humanitarian operation with the
blessings of many international friends,
to neutralize acts of terrorism and
restore peace.

President Rajapaksa pointed out that
his present mandate will be very
different from that of his last. “For my
second term as President, my promise
to my people is to deliver sustainable
peace and prosperity to all and ensure
that terrorism will not be able to raise
its ugly head again.”
He also said that in 2005, he was
elected by the people on a promise to
rid the country of the menace of
terrorism. “I say that Sri Lanka is now
at peace, peace that was only a dream
a few years ago”.
When speaking about the international
issues he spoke about the denial of

School girls abducted
(dailymirror.lk) Three schoolgirls were reportedly
abducted by unidentified men in Akuressa,
Gandara and Mawarala police areas, police said.
The three girls about 15 years of age are from
the villages of Deegala, Kekanadura and
Deiyandara in the Matara district. One of them
had been abducted in the early hours of today
from her home, the other while she was at the
Uyanwatta playground this morning and the third
girl was on her way to school when she was
abducted by a man who came in a trishaw.
Police suspect the girls might have been in love
with the men who are alleged to have abducted
them. (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)

Returned expatriates complain:
(dailynews.lk/2010/09/28) Government officials in
the Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts
said that they get a number of complaints from
people who have returned to the country after a
lapse of 20- 25 years over the illegal occupation of
their lands. Lands taken over by the LTTE were
distributed among Mahaveer families by them
during the time of the Ceasefire Agreement.
The UNF Government had issued the illegal
occupants of these lands official title deeds. An
official of the Kilinochchi District Secretariat who
wished to remain anonymous told the Daily News
that the Government had issued title deeds to the
people who occupied these lands illegally during
the time when the Ceasefire Agreement was in
force. The official said the LTTE considered the
people who left the area under their control as
traitors.
The official said their lands were distributed to
families who have made greater contribution to the
LTTE and they were given Mahaveer status. The
LTTE has issued these illegal occupants a title and
later the Government allowed them to prepare their
land deeds.
The official said that the Government at that time
allowed the people living in such lands to get their
lands deed prepared.
The official added that there were several
instances where the original title deeds for these
lands were destroyed by Lands Registry officials
with permission from higher authorities during the
CFA period.
According to a senior police officer in the
Mullaitivu Police Division, the police get at least
five such complaints a day. He said the original
occupants come with their valid title deeds and
lodge complaints with the police.
The people who returned to the area do not
know where they should go to reclaim their
lands illegally occupied by the Mahaveer
families. They complain to the Police, the
Divisional Secretary and Grama Niladharis
without success.
The official said most Mahaveer families who
were resettled in the district have been given
alternative lands but they demand lands given
by the LTTE.
This matter was also brought before the
Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission
by members of Mahaveer families when it met
at Karachchi Divisional Secretariat recently.
They complained that they developed the lands
given by the LTTE and sought compensation
from the Government. A senior official of the
Vavuniya District Secretariat Lands Office told
the Daily News that the Mahaveer families had
their own lands before the LTTE gave them
lands but their original lands are located more
interior to the A 9 road and they do not like to
live there now.
He was of the opinion that this problem can be
sorted out if these families are requested to use
their original lands.

(dailymirror.lk) The Tissamaharama Magistrate
and Additional District Judge who had allegedly
attacked a security guard and two waiters at a
night club in Kollupitiya after threatening them by
firing his official weapon in the air, was interdicted
by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC)
yesterday.
Magistrate H. Anura Seneviratne was interdicted
after JSC received a report that on Friday night he
had allegedly behaved violently and had used his
official weapon before he fled the scene.
The JSC has also initiated a disciplinary inquiry on
the judge’s conduct in addition to an investigation
being carried out by the Kollupitiya police.
“No one is above the law and the police should
take action against the judge according to the law
of the country if he is found guilty of having
committed a criminal offence,” a senior JSC officer
said.
“There should be confidence in the judiciary,” he
said while clarifying the immediate action taken to
interdict the judge.
‘The JSC is very keen on discipline being
maintained by the judges. And justice is seemed to
be done in incidents of this nature,’ he added.
According to the JSC there had been a number of
complaints and allegations against this judge and
three months ago he had been warned by the
JSC.
According to the latest report, the 45-year-old
magistrate with three others had allegedly come to
the karaoke bar on the night of April 24 and had
rented out a room there. After having the food and
liquor, the judicial officer had allegedly attempted
to force himself into the room of the female
employees. The quarrel had started when the
security guard and two other male waiters
intervened.
Later he had fired his official weapon in the air.
However the security guard had called the police,
and when the officers from Kollupitiya police had
come to the scene the judge had tried to get away
by showing his identity card. The police however
had managed to restrain him and take him to the
police station but the Magistrate had allegedly
refused to make a statement. Later he had left the
police station with his three friends.

Strokes kill 11% of Lankans annually
(island.lk) As many as 25% of adult Lankans
between the ages of 18 and 65-years smoke, 25%
use alcohol, 18% are physically inactive while 20%
are over-weight or suffer from obesity according to a
study on "Prevalence of Non-Communicable Disease
Risk Factors," Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Additional
Secretary to the Ministry of Health, told the recent
Annual General Meeting of the National Stroke
Association of Sri Lanka (NSASL).
Strokes accounted for 11% of all deaths in the
country and this was a huge economic burden
especially when people die prematurely. It was
important to continue primary prevention activities
and focus more to stop people smoking and
drinking and also follow a salt reduction strategy as
the way forward in stroke prevention, he said.
Mahipala also made the point that 81% of males
and 83% of females consumed junk food and were
on an unhealthy diet – a risk factor making them
vulnerable to strokes, a deadly disease accounting
for the second largest cause of death in
hospitals in Sri Lanka.

Muslims a peaceful
community says Governor
Alavi Moulana
By B.M. Murshideen
(dailymirror.lk) Western Province Governor S. Alavi
Moulana at a press conference held at his office
yesterday said that Muslim Organizations in Sri
Lanka were getting funds from the Middle East
mainly for education and poverty alleviation.
Responding to the newspaper reports about the
alleged involvement of Muslims in unlawful
activities using foreign funds, Mr. Moulana said
that there was absolutely no truth to them, adding
Muslims also had no record of helping terrorists or
promoting terrorism in the country.
On the contrary, the minister stated that said that
Muslims in Sri Lanka had been the victims of
terrorism. They had been forced out of Jaffna by
the LTTE in 1990 and murdered while attending
prayers at the Kattankudi Mosque the same year,

Govt. should be held
responsible: Gamage
By Sumaiya Rizvi
(dailymirror.lk) The Government should be held
responsible for the accidental explosion of
explosives in Karadiyanaru and the Chinese
company should compensate for the loss of lives,
UNP MP Anoma Gamage said yesterday.
“The Government stored explosives in such an
irresponsible way and the Chinese Government paid
Rs. 10,000 for the families that lost their loved ones.
That is not enough, they should pay each family a
compensation of Rs. Two million,” Mrs. Gamage
said. She said the place where explosives need to
be stored should be 400 metres away from any
other building and since the Government failed to
follow the safety precautions the Agrarian
Service Centre was severely damaged Mrs.
Gamage said.
She said when such an incident took place in
India the Minister in charge immediately resigned
and said the Minister should set an example.

Another suspect dies
in police custody
by Norman Palihawadana
(island.lk) The police are investigating the
circumstances which led to the death of a
person taken into custody by the Moratuwa
police on Friday (Sept 24). The police claim he
committed suicide the following day by slashing
his stomach with a shard of glass. The police
identified the dead suspect as Nayanajith.
The police say Nayanajith and one of his
accomplices wanted in connection with a spate
of robberies were taken in to custody.
While being taken to a toilet at the police station
premises, Nayanajitjh had grabbed a plain
glass placed on a table, smashed it and
slashed his stomach with a piece of it. He died
after the police admitted him to the Colombo
South hospital at Kalubowila.
The police say on information elicited from
Nayanajith and his accomplice, they recovered
three guns, one hand grenade, three gold
plated Buddha statues, three motor cycles and
one van.

UAE authorities will conduct the autopsy, after
which the body will be transported to Sri Lanka.

four years.
Non-related kidney donation now possible
Nadira Gunatilleke
(dailynews.lk/2010/09/27) Kidney patients in Sri
Lanka can obtain kidneys from live non-related
donors and cadaveric donors without problem. It
was earlier possible to obtain a kidney only from a
relation, monk or a priest. The Government bears
the entire cost of surgeries, a Health Ministry
spokesman said.
According to the spokesman, the first ever nonrelated kidney donation and transplant was
conducted at the Kandy Teaching Hospital where
a 32-year-old father of two donated a kidney to a
non-related war hero.
Both donor and recipient are in good health after
surgery. There are 1,000 donors in the database.
They have registered to donate kidneys for
patients who need kidneys, the spokesman said.
Around 20 main Government hospitals now
register kidney donors countrywide. The hospitals
are Colombo National Hospital, Kalubowila,
Ragama, Karapitiya, Kandy and Kurunegala
Teaching Hospitals, Anuradhapura, Badulla and
Ratnapura Provincial General Hospitals, Ampara,
Kegalle, Negombo, Nawalapitiya, Matara,
Dambulla and several District General Hospitals
and Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital.
These hospitals have computer facilities to
register the donors in the database, he said.
The new system will ease difficulties of kidney
patients. The implementation of the National
Organ Donor Program which includes
transplantation of kidneys to patients with chronic
kidney diseases is supported by the National
Kidney Foundation of Sri Lanka and the Kidney
Transplant Support Foundation, he added.

Silva is found guilty, he will be imposed
a sentence of 20 years rigorous
imprisonment. He said that Silva had
been convicted in a different case in the
High Court and was sentenced to a
prison term of three and half years.
Upul Jayasuriya, Counsel for Silva, said
that in the Udathalawinna Trial-at-Bar,
the accused were refused bail by the
High Court. The charge had been
related to the killing of 10 men. The
accused had filed an appeal to the
Supreme Court. The appeal was heard
by five judges of the Supreme Court.
The Attorney General did not object to
bail, when the issue was argued before
the Supreme Court. At the end of the
hearing the Court granted bail. Counsel
Jayasuriya pointed out, yesterday that at
the Udathalawinna appeal for bail, the
Attorney General did not object for bail,
despite the charge being are of murder.

General is vehemently objecting to bail.
Nalin Laduwahetty appeared for the
accused Sarath Fonseka.
The trial against Fonseka and Silva was
fixed for December 13 before High Court

(sundaytimes.lk) The trial-at-bar against former
army commander Sarath Fonseka was re-fixed for
October 4 and 5th when the case was taken up
today with the presence of the ex-army chief.
Mr. Fonseka who is accused disclosing military
secrets was brought to courts under a tight
security after the Naval Medical officer issued a
medical report that he was fit to appear in courts.
He did not appear in courts yesterday has he was
indisposed.
Court ordered the publisher of the Sunday Leader
Lal Wickrematunge and its editor Fredrica Janz to
be present in courts on the next day of hearing.
The other witnesses said they will be summoned
according to the requirements of the courts.
Fonseka was charged in the case after he made a
controversial statement to the Sunday Leader
newspaper that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya
Rajaapaksa had issued orders not to spare any of
the LTTE members who were surrendering during
the final stages of the fighting in the north last
year.
Mr. Nalin Ladduwahetti, Counsel for Mr. Fonseka
informed the bench that through court had directed
to hand over a photocopy of the note book used
by Janz for the interview with Mr. Fonseka only 30
pages had been handed over. He said there were
more than 80 pages in the note book.
The Judges said that there were blank pages in
the book, But Ladduwahetti said he wanted to
personally check it out and sought permission to
meet the Registrar. Permission was granted.
State Counsel Wasantha Nawaratna Bandara
informed courts that since there were witnesses
from Geneva and New York and early date should
be given. Accordingly the case was fixed for the
first week of October.

(island.lk) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had
yesterday told President Mahinda Rajapaksa in
New York for the sessions of the UN General
Assembly that his committee on Sri Lanka ``was in
no way empowered to investigate charges against
Sri Lanka, but was solely to advice him on matters
relating to Sri Lanka,’’ according to a news release
from the president’s office.
Ban’s office said in a ``readout’’ on yesterday’s
meeting that the Secretary General’s meeting with
Rajapaksa ``focused on the need to move forward
expeditiously on outstanding issues covered in the
joint statement of May 2009, particularly a political
settlement, reconciliation and accountability.’’
``The Secretary-General underlined that the
President’s strong political mandate provided a
uique opportunity to deliver on his commitment to
address these issues,’’ the UN spokesperson said.
``The President underlined that development and
education in the north were integral to national
reconciliation. He gave examples of progress
made on reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in
this regard.’’
There was no reference to discussions on Ban’s
committee in the UN release.
Rajapaksa had also updated the SG on the work
of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation
Commission (LLRC), the UN release said.
The president’s office in Colombo focused on the
work of the LLRC which was fully transparent and
established on principles of accountability ``in
keeping with Sri Lanka’s own method of searching
for the truth regarding a prolonged conflict and
identifying ways of preventing such conflicts in the
future.’’

A ray of hope for struggling depositors
Consolidated company to hold Golden Key
assets in the offing
By Suresh Perera
(island.lk) The creation of a consolidated
company to hold the assets, real estate and
properties of the crisis-hit Golden Key is on the
cards as a viable option to generate an
operational profit by using the wealth of this
collapsed Ceylinco subsidiary worth billions of
rupees in a bid to repay struggling depositors,
the Sunday Island learns.
Following this new development, the sale of the
overall assets of Golden Key, including the
ultra-modern ENT Hospital, Ceysands Hotel
and three floors of Ceylinco House will be
placed on hold until the legal framework is
worked out, officials said last week.
"We are actively pursuing this line now as there
appears to be consensus on making use of
these valuable assets and transfer the profits to
grant relief to depositors", they noted. "We need
to get Supreme Court sanction to embark on
this initiative".
There are 54 companies listed under Golden
Key, some of which are still making a margin,
they said. "Depositors who had invested big
money can even be appointed to the board of
the proposed consolidated company as
directors".
Depositor’ representatives, in a series of
deliberations with the Supreme Court-appointed
three-member Committee of Chartered
Accountants, Central Bank and Attorney
General’s Department officials had insisted on
the formation of a holding company without
selling the assets for a song.
A case in point of the failed company’s assets
not fetching their targeted value was the stateof-the-art ENT hospital – one of the most
modern medical facilities in Asia – for which the
highest bid received was 1.3 billion rupees from
a Singaporean investor, the officials explained.
"Local bidders had quoted far less".
A key commercial bank had earlier valued this
hospital at 4.3 billion rupees and the
sophisticated medical equipment alone, apart
from the sprawling complex and its land value,
is worth 1.1 billion rupees, they asserted.
"It would have been a tragedy to have sold this
medical facility for a fraction of its value when
Golden Key depositors continue to struggle with
neither their interest nor capital for almost two
years now", they said. "The assets are the only
hope they have"
"We strongly protested against attempts to
dispose of these assets for a song", says Ms.
Dushanthi Hapugoda, the president of the
Golden Key Depositors’ Association. "If that was
allowed to happen, we would have been pushed
from the frying pan to the fire".
She said that it would be interesting to probe
reports that some of the assets had been sold
for prices far below market rates. "This is
beyond belief".
"That’s why we are in favour of creating a
holding company so that the operational profits
can be used to settle the dues of depositors
who have suffered for so long", she noted. "We
have only these assets to recover our
investments".
She said that while depositors continue to live in
agony, Golden Key directors still travel around
in BMWs, Prados and other super luxury
vehicles. "They even come for meetings with
Central Bank and other officials in these
vehicles".
Ms. Hapugoda said that the first round of talks
on creating a holding company were held with
Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, his
officials and the Committee. "The talks were
very positive and ended on a fruitful note".
"With Lalith Kotelawala also cooperating with
ongoing efforts to repay depositors, the process
has become less complicated", she said. "We
need the support of all parties to end this
misery".
She said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa
had directed that Golden Key depositors, who
continue to go through a nightmare since the
company collapsed in December 2008, be
granted relief as early as possible.
"We have been summoned for a meeting with
the President on his return from New York", she
noted. "He is taking a lot of interest to resolve
this long-drawn issue".
The relatively small-time depositors – perhaps
those who had invested up to about three
million rupees – could be settled with funds
realized after disposing of assets and properties
of Golden Key directors, the officials said. "With
a few thousand off the list, it would make our
task easier".
These are the depositors who are suffering
most as there are scores amongst them who
had invested their pension funds and
compensatory benefits to eke out a living", they
said.
In keeping with the Supreme Court directive,
depositors will receive another payment of
100,000 rupees by next month. However, those
who had more than one account will be treated
as a single account holder and paid only
100,000 rupees.

SriLankan to launch services to Guangzhou
(island.lk) SriLankan Airlines' global route network
will expand to fifty destinations shortly, with the
planned launch of new services to Guangzhou
(Canton) in China.
The announcement of new services comes on the
heels of the Airline having launched a four-timesa-week service to Shanghai last July. They signal
a new phase of expansion at SriLankan, following
several years of consolidation of its route network
during the global economic crisis. The new service
is to be launched by early 2011.
Mohamed Fazeel, SriLankan's Head of Worldwide
Sales, said: "Sri Lanka is rapidly becoming a travel
hub in the South Asian region, with massive
development in infrastructure and tourism
following the dawn of peace a year ago. China is
fast gaining a reputation
as the world's most
important travel market,
both inbound and
outbound, and we are
confident of its enormous
potential. We are also
strongly considering
several other new
destinations in India,
Western Europe, and Eastern Europe."
While details of the Guangzhou service are being
finalized, the Airline is likely to commence
operations with three flights per week on every
Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Tourism is booming in the Indian Ocean island
nation, with a sustained growth rate of 50% over
the past 14 months, as travellers rediscover the
charms of its golden
beaches, mistswathed mountains,
ancient cultural
attractions, luxurious
resorts, and bargain
shopping.
With its hub in
Colombo at the
southern tip of India,
SriLankan also provides rapid and convenient
connections between North America, Europe and
the Middle East to the west, and South Asia and
the Far East on the other side.
Guangzhou is the third largest city in China and
the capital of Guangdong Province. It is a key
transportation hub and
trading port, and has a
population of more than
10 million people. It would

IMF Executive Board approves another $212.5 mln to Sri Lanka
(sundaytimes.lk/100926) The Executive
Board of the International Monetary Fund
(IMF) on Friday approved the disbursement
of another $212.5 million installment under
the Stand-By Arrangement (SBA), saying it
had completed the fourth review of Sri
Lanka's economic performance.
The money will be disbursed on Monday,
the IMF said in a statement after the
meeting. Murilo Portugal, Deputy Managing
Director and Acting Chair, said in the
statement that Sri Lanka’s performance
under the programme has been satisfactory
with overall economic conditions improving
and the economy likely to show strong
growth this year on the back of improved
fundamentals and political stability.
“Sustaining high, socially inclusive growth
will require substantially higher levels of
private investment, underpinned by broadbased structural and financial sector
reforms. The current favourable
environment allows the authorities to focus
on addressing the many challenges that
remain, particularly in the fiscal and financial
sectors,” he said, adding that policies will be
geared toward preserving macroeconomic
stability, ensuring external competitiveness,
facilitating capital market development, and
improving the investment climate.
He pointed out that fundamental tax reform,
including reform of the investment
promotion regime, is central to achieving the
government’s budget deficit reduction
targets while creating the fiscal space for
much-needed reconstruction and
infrastructure investment, as well as social
spending. “In this regard, the 2011 budget
will be key to demonstrate the government’s
continued commitment to the programme’s
goals.”
He said further improvements in monetary
policy formulation will provide useful support
for macroeconomic stability. “The Central
Bank is now in a position to move gradually
toward a flexible framework that targets
inflation more directly. The recent
introduction of more exchange rate flexibility
will support such a transition while also
helping to maintain competitiveness.”

Sept 28, 2010 (LBO) - India's Jet Airways said it
plans to introduce daily flights to the Sri Lankan
capital Colombo from Delhi and Mumbai to cater
to the rising number of visitors to the island.
The two new flights starting from November 5, are
in addition to the existing daily Chennal –
Colombo service, with which the airline launched
its international operations in 2004, a statement
said. The private carrier, India's second biggest
airline, will deploy 170-seater Boeing 737-800 for
the service to Sri Lanka whose launch coincides
with the start of the island's winter tourist season.
"Sri Lanka is fast emerging as a highly rated
global tourism destination and we are happy to
offer our guests seamless connections to several
destinations across our network," said Nikos
Kardassis, chief executive of Jet Airways.
Jet Airways flight 9W 256 will depart Mumbai daily
at 0210 hours reaching Colombo at 0445 hours.
On the return sector, flight 9W 255 will depart
Colombo at 2020 hours and reach Mumbai at
2255 hours.
On the Delhi-Colombo sector, flight 9W 257 will
depart Delhi at 1330 hours and arrive Colombo at
1705 hours and on the return leg, 9W 258 will
depart Colombo at 0750 hours and reach Delhi at
1130 hours.
Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka have been rising
sharply, especially from India, following the end of
the 30-year ethnic war in May 2009.

Bids for Sri Lanka dollar bond over $ 2.5 b
(dailynews.lk/2010/09/28) Sri Lanka has received
bids of more than $2.5 billion for its 10-year dollar
bond, and the deal looks set to price tighter than
the expected 6.5 percent, sources said on
Monday.
Sri Lanka is the latest emerging sovereign to
venture into bond markets as investors’ risk
appetite has returned with a vengeance this
month, and its offer has met with solid demand.
Fund managers reported that the book size was at
$2.5 to $3 billion so far, compared with the
expected $1 billion to be sold. Books have closed
in Europe and Asia.
Sources had earlier told Reuters the deal would
price around 6.5 percent. Sri Lanka plans to use
the bond’s proceeds to fund the budget and to pay
short-term debt.
“Given the books are at these levels already and
the U.S. is yet to put in (orders), 6.375 percent
(yield) looks likely,” one fund manager in London
said. Asian orders had been around $1 billion. The
Sri Lankan central bank had said earlier it planned
to issue $1 billion of sovereign bonds. A source
with knowledge of the deal said Colombo would
likely cap the issue at $1 billion.
This will be the island’s third global debt issue
since 2007, when it issued a maiden $500 million,
five-year bond.
The government sold another $500 million,
five-year bond in 2009. Bank of America
Merrill Lynch , HSBC Holdings Plc and
Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc are
managing the sale.
“We are seeing considerable interest for
emerging market bonds, and Sri Lanka will
play right into that,” said Scott Bennett,
who manages $1.5 billion in Asian fixed
income as head of Asian Investment at
Aberdeen Asset Management in
Singapore.
The sale comes a week after Standard &
Poor’s raised the country’s sovereign
credit rating by a notch to B-plus from B,
citing growth prospects and government
efforts to narrow the budget deficit.

Sri Lanka starts nuclear power study,
talks with Russia
Sept 28, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka has begun a study
to build a nuclear power plant to meet growing
electricity demand and is in talks with Russia and
other countries to get technology and training, an
official said. "We're considering nuclear power as an
option in our long-term generation plan for 2025,"
power and energy minister Patali Champika
Ranawaka told a news conference. "Our aim is to
diversify our sources of energy for generation
requirements. We will use nuclear power only if
other sources are not viable."
Electricity demand in the island has grown by eight
percent in the past six months and will double at the
current rate by 2018, he said.
The island's economic growth has begun to
accelerate following the end of its 30-year ethnic
war in May 2009.
"There's no danger of power cuts at the moment
and in the immediate future but we need to
prepare now itself to ensure there are no power
cuts after 2020," Ranawaka said. "Building a
nuclear power plant will take about 15 years."
A pre-feasibility study that has begun will take
about six months after which a feasibility study
will be done to decide from which country Sri
Lanka get assistance and where to build the
power plant.
Ranawaka said the government is in talks with
Russia which is ready to supply fuel for nuclear
power plants and take back radioactive waste
ash for disposal.
Russia, which has floating nuclear reactors, is
building a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.

(dailynews.lk/2010/09/27) Britain's long-haul
travellers will find that their pound will stretch
furthest in Sri Lanka, Mexico and the Far
East this winter, according to new research
into holiday costs, The Daily Telegraph
reported yesterday.
The Post Office's annual Long-Haul Holiday
Report compares the cost of 10 essential
holiday purchases "such as an evening
meal, a cup of coffee and sun cream" in 22
destinations.
In Sri Lanka, the 10 items cost just Pounds

46.85 compared with Pounds 155.48 in the
Australian capital Sydney.
Research released this week by Hayes and
Jarvis, a tour operator specialising in longhaul trips, also suggested that Sri Lanka is
among the best-value destinations for a
package holiday, with a one-week break in
November costing Pounds 799 on average.
Sri Lanka has witnessed a sharp rise in
visitors following the end to the conflict.
Nearly 400,000 foreign tourists visited in the
first eight months of 2010.
Sri Lanka is also holding talks with the International
Atomic Energy Authority and countries with
advanced nuclear industries to provide training and
technical expertise.
Ranawaka said nuclear power is more costeffective in the long term against conventional
sources like coal as well as non-conventional
renewable sources like hydro, solar and wind.
Supplies of petroleum and coal fuels are running
out while renewable energy sources like solar and
wind cannot be despatched and centrally controlled
while storages costs are high, he said.
"The problem with solar and wind is that they are
not available when we need it most as our peak
electricity demand is at night," Ranawaka said.

The dew dropped flora and fauna and the sweetly
scented vibrant blossoms of the Birmingham
Botanical Gardens provided a beautiful backdrop
for the Annual Charity Ball of the Sri Lankan
Medical & Dental Association(SLMDA) on
Saturday the 18th September 2010. This was a
venue that stood out from the usual Sri Lankan
dance venues on Bath Road, Heathrow in that the
setting was idyllic amidst lush, green foliage and
the ambience had a rapport with nature. In
keeping with the floral theme, the tables in the
opulent Garden Suite were named after flowers &
the décor, in various hues of lilac & purple,
blended tastefully with the surrounding greenery.
The move away from London did not seem to
adversely affect attendance however, as a crowd
of nearly 300 guests, mostly of Sri Lankan origin &
mostly doctors & dentists by profession were
present at this dance. Departing from tradition
over a third of the guests were youth which
brought promise to the future of the association.
Following a sumptuous three-course meal, Dr
Rasieka Jayatunga, the President of the SLMDA,
addressed the guests, requesting that a minute's
silence was observed in memory of the co-founder
of the SLMDA Dr Jeewa Siriwardena and the
brothers of four members of the committee who
had died within the previous three months. She
emphasised on the ethnic harmony, which bonded
the committee, and advocated that Sri Lanka
should emulate the same. She also elaborated on
the Limb Fitting Project, run by Dr Bandara
Panangamuwa who has to date fitted over 500
limbs to the limbless in the IDP camps in Sri Lanka
during the past 15 months. She urged well wishes
to donate funds to this worthy cause, and thereby
contribute to the betterment of those
disadvantaged fellow countrymen in our
Motherland.
A short traditional dance item by Miss Indula
Bopitiya & Miss Sayuri Serasingha provided
variety to the evening's entertainment while the
compere, Mr Raveen Jayasuriya, a 5th-yr medical
student, ensured that the night unfolded smoothly.
The excellent band Exceed, (led by Mr Praveen
Karunasena) delighted the guests with a fantastic
repertoire of music, appealing to all ages & tastes,
which had them dancing the night away. Feeling
was unanimous that the association had finally
found the secret formula to engage with the youth
and provide entertainment across the age
boundaries.
There was a general consensus that this was a
dance like no other, with the emphasis being on
quality than quantity, taking the SLMDA to new
heights, and providing a breath of fresh air on the
usual Sri Lankan dinner dance circuit. As
Birmingham was waking to greet the Pope, the
guests departed at 1.30 am with the feeling that
this was the best Annual Charity Ball the
association had organised in it's 28-year history.

Shing Kwan Investment
(Singapore) Pte Ltd, a member

by ORCL in 2005.
Shareholders have been told that
following redemption of the
preference shares at a cost of
Rs.3.74 billion, an anticipated
surplus of Rs.472.8 million will
be infused as working capital
into the Havelock City project.
ORCL was restructured five
years ago by writing off its
accumulated losses by
reducing its issued shares by
nearly 90.7 million (15.53% of
its issued share capital).
This was a unique exercise in
that the entire burden was
borne by Overseas Realty’s
major shareholder, Shing Kwan

shareholders keeping their
holdings intact.

So, what is the ‘value-added’ of these projects?
Such projects of Thalwila Wella School provide
an interface for mutual learning, sharing and
caring across countries, racial groups and
religions.
Hindu, Christians and Muslims work alongside
each other, sharing common goals: mutual
respect, the desire to share resources,
knowledge and skills, and to kindle in the local
children the desire for life-long learning and
engage with other cultures via the medium of
language and sports activities.(SF)

Richmond clinch OWSC sixes title
Chris Dhambarage
(dailynews.lk/2010/09/27) Richmond College,
Galle clinched the Old Wesleyite Sports Club

defeated the favourites St. Peter’s College by 32
runs in the final worked off at Campbell Park
yesterday. This 18th annual inter-school under 19
tournament was conducted by the Old Wesleyites
Sports Club in collaboration with the Sri Lanka
Schools Cricket Association and sponsored by
Ceylon Biscuits Limited for the third successive

Richmond College received the Munchee Glucofit

Inter School Under-15 Division I Cricket Final
Unbeaten Joes and Richmond seek elusive title
By Reemus Fernando
(island.lk) Two unbeaten teams, St. Joseph’s
College, Darley Road and Richmond College,
Galle will go flat out to win a long eluded title when
the two teams clash in
the Inter School Under15 Division I Cricket
Tournament final at
CCC Grounds, today.
Reaching the final with
some outstanding
performances on their
back, the two teams are
expected to produce a
thrilling climax to the
tournament if the
weather and the treacherous wicket conditions at
CCC permit them to do so.
The two schools have not won an Under-15
Division I cricket title for a long time now. A
spokesman for St. Joseph’s said that they have not
won an Under-15 Division I title since Dilan
Ramanayake captained them to defeat arch rivals
St. Peter’s in the final in 1996, while Richmond
officials were referring to their records as far back
as the early ‘80s to find out whether they have ever
won a title.
It is not only the unbeaten records maintained by
the teams that is going to make the final contest
interesting to watch but also the notable individual
performances throughout the tourney. Richmond
skipper Hasitha Madushan, who heads te batting
averages of both teams will be the key player for
them. He has an aggregate of 779 runs at an
outstanding average of 86.55 runs with three

sports associations can take the sports there.
The latest sport that is striving to reach the people
of Jaffna is the Sri Lanka Tennis Association
(SLTA) who has re-commenced a tennis
programme they began in 2001.
The junior tennis programme they began in 2001
with the support of Rev. Fr. Jero Selvanayagam,
who is the present Principal of St. Patricks
College, Jaffna and Joseph Sahayraj as
coordinator did a splendid job. Unfortunately the
programme had to be abandoned due to the war
situation.
With the turn of events President of the SLTA
massive centuries. Richmond amassed 541 for
three wickets against St. Xavier’s in a second
round match, with Madushan top scoring with 170
runs. He also had an unbeaten 160 (against
Revata) and 123 runs (against
Dharmasoka).
In the bowling department, off spinner
Bhanuka Maduppriya (24 wickets),
Madushan (21 wickets) and Tyroon
Anduwatta top wicket takers’ list.
Richmond will rely heavily on them to
win the title.
St. Joseph’s too have their share of
outstanding performers. They have three
batsmen who have scored over 500 runs
in Duran de Alwis, Nirvana Abeysekara
and Sadeera Samarawikrama. Samarawickrama
amassed the highest individual score in the
tournament, when he cracked a blistering 194 runs
in their win against St. Anne’s.
In the bowling department, spinner Pathum
Madusanka (34 wickets) and left arm paceman
Shammi Seneviratne (19 wickets) have been the
key wicket takers.
How they reached the final
Both St. Joseph’s and Richmond remained
unbeaten in the first and the second rounds and
were the group champions in their respective
groups. Richmond beat Askoa Vidyalaya (Prequarter-final), Gurukula College (quarter-final) and
Royal College, Colombo (semi-final) during the
knockout stage, while St. Joseph’s beat
Dharmapala College, Kottawa (Pre-quarter-final),
Prince of Wales College (quarter-final) and St.
Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa (semi-final).
Maxwell de Silva has appointed Barathiraj Pillai
visited Jaffna over five days to explore the
feasibility of presenting junior tennis to schools.
Initially, the SLTA will form the Jaffna Tennis Club
to bring back the game that was famous in the
past. Jaffna had six tennis clubs that were
destroyed completely. Only Vatukottai Jaffna
College Staff Tennis Club was functioning in a low
key conducted tournaments every year.
Barathiraj Pillai, the Outstation Development
Officer of SLTA introduced the ‘Play and Stay’
programme to the pupils during his recent visit to
Jaffna.
The SLTA Development Officer also conducted
teachers training and meeting with eight schools
of training of players.

Let’s stick with inter-club cricket
(nation.lk/2010/09/26) How serious are we with
inter-provincial cricket? This is a question that
needs to be asked following the performance of
provincial Twenty20 champs Wayamba in the ongoing Champions League Twenty20 tournament in
South Africa. They won only one out of four
matches (lost three) in their group and returned
home with a rather dismal record.
Over the years many attempts have been made by
past cricket administrators to conduct a provincial
tournament of sorts and all efforts have failed. The
current cricket administration has three interprovincial tournaments lined up for the upcoming
2010-11 season – the Inter-provincial league, the
Inter-provincial limited-over and the Inter-provincial
Twenty20 - all well and good. This is in addition to
the inter-club Premier tournaments – league and

The question that begs to be asked is how
seriously are the players taking the inter-provincial
tournaments? For example, take a look at the
Wayamba team. Of the 15 players who went to
South Africa only five are from the Wayamba
province – Jeevantha Kulatunga, Rangana Herath,
Damitha Hunukumbura, Shalika Karunanayake
and Sameera de Zoysa. The rest of the squad was
made up of players from Colombo, the suburbs
and from other parts of Sri Lanka.
Now when a team of this composition is picked
how can one expect them to show the same
commitment they would if they were representing
their club side? If Wayamba was a club side, just
imagine the wrath and criticism the players would
have faced from the club membership.
