INDEPENDENCE
DAY 1776
July 4, 2015
www.americanvillage.org
Welcome to the American Village’s Independence Day Celebration of our country’s 239th birthday!
On this July 4th we honor the founders who pledged their “lives, fortune, and sacred honor” when they signed the
Declaration of Independence. They boldly declared as self-evident “truths” that life and liberty are given to us by our
Creator, not by government or man. They asserted the revolutionary principle that government is granted its powers only
by the consent of the people.
Today we also honor those in each generation since who have upheld these
principles by their service to and sacrifice for our country.

What can we give our country on its birthday? Almost a century ago, William
Tyler Page wrote what would become known as The American’s Creed – and
incidentally that creed is now featured on the American Village’s new keepsake
Independence Day fan. The last sentence in his creed suggests ways in which we
can give back to our country:
I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution,
to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.
Happy Birthday, America! We pledge our allegiance!
