2011-2012 report to the community
United Way of the Coastal Bend LIVING AND GIVING UNITED 2011-2012 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY United by mission! Imagine a community where helping even one person stengthens the community for everyone. Imagine a community where children can be successful in school and life, or where families can thrive and be self sufficient. Imagine a community where individuals don’t have to worry about where they’ll sleep or get their next meal. United Way of the Coastal Bend is focused on this very goal. Every gift to United Way comes from individuals and organizations from all over the Coastal Bend. We come from different places. We come to different conclusions. But when we LIVE UNITED, we become united to change lives. When you made your generous contribution to the 2011 campaign, you gave more than dollars and cents; you gave hope and help to friends, co-workers, neighbors and families right here in the Coastal Bend. Our network of community partners, donors and volunteers is leveraging your donation to deliver real, measurable and lasting solutions to people in need. The reported outcome measures within these pages illustrate that together, we are creating many opportunities for success opening doors where few or none existed. Together, we are making a difference. Thank you. Catrina Wilson President & CEO 2 | United Way of the Coastal Bend Your donation combined with another and another created a domino effect that has given you the power to reach thousands in need. THANK YOU! 2011-2012 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | 3 FINANCIAL OVERVIEW United Way prides itself on being a trustworthy and accountable organization. EDUCATION The quality of an individual’s education has a profound and lasting effect on the person’s ability to succeed in the world. United Way provides leadership in early childhood learning, quality child care, and school readiness. INCOME United Way focuses on solutions to increase financial stability for individuals and families. United Way and its partners help families increase income, build savings and gain assets that contribute to a stable future through job training and tax filing assistance. Children start learning at birth: the foundation for future learning is laid in the first few years. Disadvantaged children come to school sometimes two years behind their peers in pre-reading skills, and most never catch up. By third grade, a child’s grades and absenteeism rates can foreshadow with 80% accuracy whether he or she will complete high school. Our ongoing partnership with the Coastal Bend CA$H Coalition continues to provide individuals and families free help to electronically file income tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The program helped to file over 2500 returns during the 2012 tax season which returned over $3.1 million in refunds to our area. Our emphasis on early childhood learning has introduced the Born Learning Trails to our area. Through partnerships with area companies and organizations, the trails are installed in area parks and include 10 fun outdoor games on engaging signs to help parents and caregivers create learning opportunities for a young child. HEALTH A comprehensive approach to health is needed to help people begin and sustain healthy lives. As the World Health Organization states, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” United Way works to improve access to quality health care and improve the overall health and welfare of individuals. Part of that focus includes serving on the Community Health Needs Assessment Task Force, which launched the Coastal Bend Health Finder website - a free online medical resource and directory helping to put healthcare providers within reach of individuals living within a 15 county radius in this area. Visit with a United Way representative to learn more about sponsoring a trail for a park near you! Children are constantly learning, right from birth. Their early years are the foundation for growth and development, and what they learn during those years depends on the experiences they have each and every day. This is our greatest challenge as caregivers, as well as our greatest opportunity. The Born Learning Trail is an interactive, playful and visible community engagement tool. It captures ten fun outdoor games on engaging signs to help parents and caregivers use everyday outings - including trips to the trail - to support learning opportunities for a young child. Current trail locations include: Country Club Park (Congressional Drive in Corpus Christi), South Bluff Park (Tancahua/Agnes/Park Streets in Corpus Christi), Simpson Park (Broadway Street in Portland) and Oak Park (Live Oak Street in Corpus Christi). A Born Learning Trail installation is a half-day project for a group of approximately 10-12 volunteers. Duties would include digging holes for the ten signs, securing signs with concrete, painting stencils on sidewalk or other hard surface area and installing signs onto poles. It’s a fun and easy team building opportunity to engage employees, committees and friends. There are currently four Born Learning Trails in Nueces and San Patricio counties. The trail is an early learning tool provided to the community through United Way of the Coastal Bend by organizations including the Church of Reconciliation, the City of Portland, Country Club Estates Neighborhood Association, DuPont, Holt-CAT-Corpus Christi and Rock Engineering. 2011-2012 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | 9 VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE As a member of the Coastal Bend CA$H Coalition, the United Way of the Coastal Bend helps to train and coordinate volunteers for VITA to provide free tax preparation and e-filing services for low to moderate income taxpayers.
