From the General manager’s from Manager’s Desk lions, and Tigers and Lions, Bears! Oh my! bears! My! ~ Dorothy The Children and Family Programming Committee is up to its old tricks, planning a spectacular event for our youngest members of the ACC… “Wizard of Oz” night on March 2 (see page 10.) But don’t think that it Paul Kroll, CCM is all fun and games for General Manager our youngsters, as the Committee fully realizes the importance of good manners. They are also sponsoring a four week (on Sundays, see page 5) Etiquette Course that will culminate in a five-course meal here at the Club. Children and Family Programming is just one of our many Committees, who guide and govern our Club. Since we have just welcomed our new Board members and Committee liaisons, now is the perfect time to choose your passion, join a committee and get involved! Check out page 5, from athletics to associates we want your input! Of course we can’t let Spring pass without a fantastic party for adults! We have had many successful “Spring Flings” at the ACC, and this year we are adding a new twist and a special Celebration as a nod to our Centennial. On Friday April 20, the “Red Hot Rhythm Review” dance band will energize us as we recognize “100 Reasons to Celebrate the ACC!” Don’t dare miss it! Great members and great events always make for great times here at the ACC. We must also make sure that we recognize great staff members, too. Willie byrdsong, Byrdsong, our loyal Dishwasher, is retiring in early April after more than 40 years of hard work in our kitchen. You may not recognize him, because he is behind the scenes, but he has truly done an exceptional service for this Club in his position (see page 15). He will be recognized with a special 2 | ACCent Magazine luncheon by our staff, and we invite you to stop in to say “Congratulations” to Willie. As we turn the corner to Spring, we look forward to growing our relationship with the Columbus Country Club. May 1 marks the beginning of our second year of the joint venture. With warmer weather and golf season approaching, prospective members will be offered a “One Membership” option to fully utilize both Clubs. Our own ACC members, who have been with us prior to the venture, are still welcome to “enhance” for increased CCC use at no initiation, simply paying the increased dues and minimum amounts. If the thought of drinks by the pool or golf on a sunny day interests you, contact our Membership Department for guidance on how to “enhance” your membership! Lisa Antolino was welcomed as the incoming President of the Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting & Election Night Dinner on Monday, February 20. President’s Message Let's Celebrate! In 1912, a passionate group of men founded The Athletic Club of Columbus and started our many traditions for sports and fitness, business affiliations and comradery that have endured a century. One hundred years later the ACC has many reasons to celebrate -- or at least 100! On April 20, I hope you will join with your Board of Directors and me for our first official celebration of the Centennial when we open the club doors for our spring party -- "100 Reasons to Celebrate." At the party, we will unveil the National Historic Register plaque that will soon be affixed to our Clubhouse. To me this plaque honors the efforts of members over the years who have evolved our club, a significant achievement given many comparable organizations have disappeared. A key to this success is strong club leadership, so fittingly we invite all past presidents to come as our special guests. I hope all of you will join us for cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a live band -- and what will be the party of a century! Serving as president in this momentous year is an honor. For that matter, serving as president in any year is a privilege that about 100 individuals have shared. My good fortune has been to serve on the board with past presidents Mark Collins, David Royer, Doug Kennedy, Jim Sipp, Mike Paul, Roger Sugarman, Jim Hendricks and Steve Van Heyde, each of whose leadership contributed greatly to the sustainability of this club today and to me personally. In addition to these presidents, countless others have served on our board, volunteer committees and maintained a level of involvement critical to having a club "built to last." I encourage you all to be active with the ACC in ways that make sense for you. There is much to gain as a result. If you are so inclined, there are committees and “Clubs within the Club” to consider (see page 5.) Soon our new website will list members of this year’s committees. Feel free to talk with those members or our staff about these groups. It's no secret that I'm the first woman to serve as president, which in large part is due to staying involved. My first volunteer experience was on the Women's Committee. While the group started as a way to support and grow women membership, the group evolved to broaden its role of connectedness -- both within the club and Lisa A. Antolino outside. This committee President has reached out to organizations such as Race for the Cure, Homeless Families Foundation, and Dress for Success. Their work enhances the club and our reputation in this community. Staying involved and active with the club is being part of something great. While none of us will likely be here in 2112, I hope our efforts will assure another great ACC party in the spring of that year. Centennial Corner A glimpse into our past 100 years. In 1963… ACC Member and the youngest winner in golf at that time, Jack Nicklaus, at age 23, was headed to Las Vegas to compete in the Tournament of Champions. Winnings for the event were $55,000. Tom Bogen won the Squash League Crown, narrowly defeating Dan Carmichael. Thomas J. Quinn, originally from County Sligo, Ireland, was hired as the Club’s “Bowling and Pocket Billiards” Manager. ACC Chef Gus Husse was honored at a luncheon before leaving for the Pan-American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he was Bicycling Coach for the U.S. Team. He came to the Club at just 17 years of age, when his cousin was a cook at the Club. He left in 1967, and he then rejoined our staff on April 1, 1972. He has always been a Dishwasher, and he has worked many different shifts, with his most recent being 9 to 5. He has an easygoing, quiet nature that makes him a favorite of his colleagues, and even when the ACC kitchen has boasted some temperamental chefs, he says that they always left him alone because he just “comes to work and does my best job.” He recalls the days when there were six Dishwashers at the Club, and it was “really jumping” with him still cleaning the dishes at 3 and 4 A.M. He describes himself as a “country boy,” and he looks forward to relaxing in his home on East High Street in his retirement. He may spend some of his retirement hours working on model cars and planes, a hobby that he has enjoyed over the years. His wife, Constance, has passed away, and he has a son, Michael Mills who lives in the area. Willie will be greatly missed by Staff and his loyalty to the Club is unparalleled. His parting words to the ACC: “I love the Club…the atmosphere and the people. Thank you for letting me be here all these years.” Willie Byrdsong retires from the ACC after more than 40 years.
