School Profile
Our Story
In 1993, after collaboration between the Capuchin Fathers based at Plumpton and the Catholic Education Office, meetings began
concerning the construction of a new Catholic systemic high school at Hassall Grove. The new school was to be situated firmly in
the Good Shepherd Parish.
The school’s layout has deliberately incorporated a Franciscan theme through aspects of the village of Assisi in Italy. The wide,

white stone pillars encompassing the extensive colonnades, the Town Square and the long walkway or ‘Street’ all have this
intended Italian aspect. This Franciscan influence was also paired with a strong Aboriginal connection with respect to the
significance of the site in the local Aboriginal history. The first and only land grants given to Aboriginal people by Governor
Macquarie were to Colebee and Nurragingy nearby, and the Native Institute and the original Blacktown are close by the Bells
Creek, a sacred burial site.
The first Year 7 students commenced classes in 1994 and the school experienced its first graduating class of Year 10 in 1997.
In 1997 it was decided to restructure the Greater Mt Druitt area and form the Christ Catholic College with St Agnes at Rooty Hill,
Loyola at Mt Druitt, and Clare. This came about in 1999 but after five years a further restructure was made and now the three
schools together form the Christ Catholic Community of Schools.
Since 2005, renewed vision and a clearly defined three-year strategic management plan has set direction and challenge for St
Clare's as it strives to create a culture of academic excellence in a caring, safe and Christian environment.
School Crest and MottoÂ
Crest
Our crest consists of a red cross which represents hope and life for Christians and reminds us that our actions and observations
are based on love from the heart.
The four leaves allude to nature and creation, one for each academic year. They recall St Clare, ‘the first
plant’ of St Francis and the crook of the Good Shepherd Parish. The sun and moon remind us of St Clare,
'a Light for the Way’ along with Christ, ‘the Light of the World’. The Christian perspective along with the
Aboriginal Dreamtime stories of the Sun Woman and Male Moon as creative forces, present a rich
partnership with the community. The black background highlights the Christian paradox of light from
darkness, hope for the hopeless and life from death.
Motto
The motto ‘Praise God by Your Life’ entreats us to strive for wholeness. We meet God in all aspects of our life and show our
closeness by the way we live our life. It is in the ordinary everyday living of our life that we demonstrate God’s love and glory.
Our Patron - Clare
St Clare is the patron of Clare Catholic High School.
Clare was born in Assisi in Italy in 1193. As a child she loved to learn. She studied Latin, music and needlework. She loved listening
to stories and she was very concerned for the poor. She was always giving things away to them.
As a young, rich person, Clare chose not to marry into wealth as her family expected, but instead she ran away to join Francis of
Assisi in serving God through poverty, peace and prayer.
Clare was the founder of the Second Order of St Francis, the Order of St Clare which is known as the Poor Clares. She was a
person of great courage and strength of character. She was obedient to Francis and even though she was the superior, she
served her sisters with loving care and humility. She was truly a remarkable woman and her influence is still strong today. Just like
Francis, news of her wisdom spread, and prayer and advice were sought from her by rich and poor.
By the time of her death in 1253, there were 150 monasteries associated with Clare in existence. She was canonised in 1255.

Franciscan spiritualityÂ
Francis of Assisi is very much a saint for all ages, a saint for all people. His life was marked by faith and joy, service towards others,
prayer, peace, and the love of the earth and all created things.
He preached the gospel message of a loving God who gives extravagantly, who invites each of us to participate fully in life in all its
diversity and richness.
General Information
The ‘House’ system
Each student at St Clare's Catholic High School has an association with a house, the patrons of which were selected for the
characteristics they possess – generosity, humility, bravery, respect.
All siblings of a family are allocated to the same house.
Each house is further separated into six homeclasses which all have students from each of the Years 7–10.
The house system has only recently been reintroduced to St Clare's but has since been found to improve interaction between the
junior and senior students of the school. A sense of pride and house spirit is warmly fostered.
School (sport) house patrons
MacKillop — Black
Mary McKillop was born in 1842. She was dedicated to the education of the children of the poor. Mary died in
1909. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995.
Chisholm — Gold
Caroline Chisholm (1808–1877) was a humanitarian who worked closely with female immigrant’s in Australia.
Caroline convinced the Governor of Sydney for a building to house migrant women. She also set up the first
employment office and introduced work contracts for these women.
Kolbe — Blue
Maximilian Kolbe (1894–1941) was a Polish Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in
the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz, in Poland.
Benedict—Red
St Benedict (1526–1589) was born into slavery, gave away his possessions and joined the Franciscan friars
where his family lived. Benedict never referred to possessions as ‘mine’ but always ‘ours’. He had gifts for
prayer and the guidance of souls.

St Clare's is set amid the housing estate of Hassall Grove and serves the Good Shepherd Parish.
Our school boasts modern and up-to-date facilities including:

Most classrooms are outfitted with Smartboards and projectors which can be connected to the many resources available through
the library.
Our grounds are sustained by water tanks and the school is energy efficient with a large solar electricity panel. Basketball/tennis
courts and large areas for outdoor sports, and a passive area, lend to the school a pleasant environment whilst catering for active
teenagers.
Canteen
There is an excellent canteen at St Clare's. There is a wide variety of healthy foodstuffs to be made available. Please see the latest

Parent Involvement
At St Clare's Catholic High School we value parents and the contributions they can make throughout their child’s education. An
invitation is always extended to parents for our various functions during the school year, such as Clare Day, mass, parent/teacher
interviews, information nights, subject selection evening, showcase, working bees and special events. Parents have a voice through
the Parent and Friends Association and are also encouraged to volunteer as canteen helpers.
‘Clare Connection’ is our fortnightly newsletter and teachers can communicate with parents through the student diary or with phone
calls.
Our SMS system also keeps parents up to date with student absences and lateness.
Learning & Teaching
Religious Education
Religious Education is central to the total school program. Religious Education is education in faith or catechesis which involves the
awakening, nourishing and developing of a person’s life of faith. Therefore the aim is giving the students a satisfactory religious
education in timetabled classes, and establishing within the school a specifically Christian climate which will form the basic
framework for the total education of the individual student and the continuing formation of the staff members in the knowledge, love
and likeness of Jesus Christ.
The Religious Education teacher, in a special way, is given the challenge of ensuring that the message of Christ in its fullness is
passed on, and shared with students.
General aims
The Religious Education program aims to help students to:

be open to the gift of faith as an invitation by which God is revealed in Jesus, in the church and liturgy, in scripture, in

Prayer
The Religious Education program is an attempt to help students become persons of prayer:
Each day is commenced and concluded with prayer.
The Religious Education program exposes students in a variety of prayer forms in the hope that each student will discover
meaningful forms of personal prayer.
Prayer services are held for Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Advent, Christmas, Education Day, camps, retreats, etc.
Opportunities are provided for students to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist and Reconciliation.
Time is allocated for staff to pray together.
The clergy
Father Gerard O'Dempsey, ofmcap, from our local parish Good Shepherd, supports the school through masses for both class and
whole school. Brother Lawrence works pastorally within the school on a daily basis. Both are invited to be part of school retreats,
professional development days and other special events.

At St Clare's Catholic High School we are challenged by the Catholic Education Office Vision Statement to ‘be inviting, inclusive and
just’.
Our school values the unique nature of each individual student. We welcome and celebrate diversity in culture, language
background and talents in our student community. We strive to develop each individual according to their potential and to prepare
students with diverse learning needs for full, active and meaningful participation in society.
The school operates within an inclusive framework whereby students’ diverse learning needs are primarily catered for within the
mainstream classroom with the specialist support of the learning support team.
Programs, policies and practices have been developed to cater for the needs of students with disabilities, such as a cognitive
delay, language disorder, specific learning difficulties, mental health issues, literacy difficulties, and for those who have a language
background other than English.
Our teaching theory states that students learn best when they are experiencing success through engaged learning with appropriate
tasks leading to responsibility for their learning.
Therefore the learning support team will:
recognise the critical role of the classroom teacher in identifying the diverse needs of students and adjust their teaching
programs for the range of students in their classes
assist LOL (Leaders of Learning), to work with their staff and members of the learning support team, with adjusting
classroom tasks, assignments and assessment tasks to cater for the range of students within their classes
provide support and opportunities for professional development for all staff, to further their skills in teaching and
supporting the full range of students
identify and access students with diverse learning support needs and provide support according to their needs and within
the constraints of supplied funding
provide a yearly individual plan (educational, transition, behaviour or health) and evaluation for all funded special
education students and regularly meet and liaise with parents
provide individual, small group and class support where possible to ensure support is catering to students’ needs
liaise with school staff and outside agencies to support the needs of students with learning difficulties
liaise with feeder schools to identify and track students with learning support needs
apply for and administer special provisions for eligible students in the ROSA
identify students with high literacy and numeracy support needs particularly upon transition to the school or after the
NAPLAN assessment.
The learning support team will coordinate programs to assist students based on the funding criteria determined by the Catholic
Education Office, Parramatta which flow from the Disability Standards for Education (2005) and entitles each student access to

courses and programs offered by the school ‘on the same basis’ as a student without a disability. This will mean that appropriate
‘adjustments’ need to be made to the educational environment and to the curriculum which will facilitate ‘participation’ by
students with special and diverse learning needs. This underpins the approach of the school in supporting students with learning
difficulties and disabilities at St Clare's Catholic High.
Extracurricular
At St Clare's Catholic High School we value the whole person and encourage extracurricular activities to develop areas of the
student’s interests that can be met through other avenues.

The staff is open to suggestions for different and interesting activities and will accommodate these suggestions if practicable.
Library
St Clare's library is a centre of learning, reflecting the life mission of Jesus Christ, to serve the educational needs of the young men
and women who attend the school.
We provide materials and services for the library users through a multimedia collection, based on desired outcomes of the
curriculum, for the use in both teaching and learning situations and for recreational purposes.
Our collection has been developed with consideration for the interests, ability level and individual needs of all users, with particular
emphasis on students with special needs, gifted and talented and ESL students.
Today students face an information-rich future in which change will be one of the few constants of their life experience. Their ability
to adapt and fulfil their individual potentials will require them to be lifelong learners and independent decision makers.
St Clare's library service endeavours to develop among its individual users a love of learning, the skills of learning, and a belief in
the importance of self-direction in learning.

The sport program at St Clare's Catholic High School is designed to give all students the opportunity to develop the knowledge,
skills and attitudes that will empower them to adopt a healthy approach to their lives.
Representative sport
A wide range of sporting opportunities are provided to students at St Clare's Catholic High. As a member of the Parramatta
Diocesan Secondary Schools’ Sporting Competition (PDSSSC), St Clare's Catholic High School competes in a number of sports

How To Enrol Your Child
Enrolment
Joining this community means that parents/carers and students are committed to:
the development of quality relationships with all members of the school community
the Catholic identity and evangelising mission of the school within the church
supporting the school in upholding school rules and policies
involvement by parents and caregivers, where possible, in the life of the school and in fundraising.
The Year 7 enrolment process commence in April each year, with a Parent Information Evening, which is advertised through the
local parish churches, the local papers and this website. Application forms are available at this meeting, on the website or from the
school office during school hours.
Applications for all years are taken throughout the year and, if necessary, held on a waiting list until a position becomes available.
Complete the Enrolment Agreement Form and bring it to the school with the following documents:
Proof of student's residential address (e.g. original copies of council rates notice, residential lease, electricity accounts,
statutory declaration).
Birth certificate or identity documents.
Copies of any family law or other relevant court orders (if applicable).
Copies of current and previous school reports and NAPLAN report.
If your child is a permanent resident but not a citizen of Australia, you will need to provide:
Passport or travel documents for the student and his/her father and mother.
If your child is a temporary visa holder you will also need to provide:
Authority to enrol issued by the Temporary Visa Holders Program Unit. This is required for visitor and temporary visa
holders.
Authority to enrol or evidence of permission to transfer issued by the International Student Centre (if holding an
international full fee student visa).
Evidence of the visa the student has applied for (if the student holds a bridging visa).
If your child is of Catholic faith, you will need to ask your local parish priest to complete the Parish form and send it to the school.
All documents can be brought to the school between 7.30am - 3.30pm on school days.
