Situated on the northern side of Peninsular Malaysia,
Kedah, the state that borders Thailand, is filled with
archaeological remnants. Alor Setar is the state capital of
Kedah while the royal town is Bandar Anak Bukit.
Dubbed as the “Jelapang Padi Malaysia”, Kedah offers an
array of rice-based delicacies that can really tickle your
appetite such as Nasi Ulam, which is rice served with the
freshest ulam-ulam (local salad) and grated coconut.
There are also ‘pulut’ or sticky rice served alongside
mango, durian or banana, ‘pulut inti’ or stuffed sticky rice
as well as ‘tapai’ or fermented rice, all are definitely the
favourites amongst the locals here.
This ‘Wonder of the North’ offers many interesting tourist
destinations such as Langkawi - a duty-free shopping
haven, and pristine beaches. Other attractions include
Lembah Bujang, Alor Setar Tower, Ulu Legong Hot Spring
and more.

Gunung Jerai
EXIT 173 GURUN • 21KM
Formerly known as Pulau Serai and Puncak Kedah, Gunung
Jerai or Mount Jerai sits between the borders of Kuala Muda
and Yan, which is 35 minutes from Exit 173.
In the olden days, due to its strategic location, Gunung Jerai
was once a guide for the seafarers and traders.
The mountain is famous for its myth including Raja Bersiong,
which was told to have founded a village at the foot of this
mountain. It is also claimed that there is a rock resembling
the shape of a ship somewhere at the peak of this mountain
called the Batu Kapal, which was owned by Maharaja Merong
Mahawangsa. The ship was said to have been cursed by Sang
Kelembai when it tried to dock at the area.

Aside from the legendary myths, the mountain features
lush plantation areas including the popular forests - hill
dipterocarp forest and upper hill dipterocarp forest, suitable for
all the nature lovers out there.
