Page 2 March, 2011 Texas Twister THE PASTOR’S CAT A friend recently sent this story about the pastor of a church. He had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and pulled it until the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten. That’s what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went ‘boing!’ and the kitten instantly sailed through the air - out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they’d seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, ‘Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping,’ and went on about his business. A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, ‘Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?’ She replied, ‘You won’t believe this,’ and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, ‘Well, if God gives you a cat, I’ll let you keep it.’ She told the pastor, ‘I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won’t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her.’ Never underestimate the Power of God and His unique sense of humor. exas wister Published monthly by: Lane’s Texas Twister P.O. The Haircut A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he’d make a deal with his son, “You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car.” The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he’d settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said, “Son, you’ve brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I’m disappointed you haven’t had your hair cut.” The boy said, “You know, Dad, I’ve been thinking about that, and I’ve noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there’s even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.” Dad’s reply............. “And did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?” Page 4 March, 2011 Bankruptcy and the Bible By Lucy M. Hebron, Hebron Law Firm We live in uncertain times where money and jobs are in short supply. Many East Texans face mounting debt, foreclosure and other financial disaster. Most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, with many one paycheck away from total financial ruin or the dreaded “b” word – bankruptcy. To file or not to file? Lots of East Texans struggle with this decision having been brought up in a generation where you pay your bills and you don’t dodge your creditors, regardless of the circumstances. For many, this is a tortuous decision, fraught with shame, hopelessness and defeat. Years ago, one of my clients with a family member who was a minister brought to my attention that bankruptcy is a biblically-based concept. It might be comforting for those in financial distress to revisit what the Bible has to say about debt. While the underlying premise in the Old Testament is that people are expected to pay their debts (Leviticus 25:39) as a moral and legal obligation, this obligation is tempered or balanced by principles of fairness and compassion. Implicit in this “obligation” is that people should pay debts but only debts that are “just” or “fair”. It is conceivable that the Bible never contemplated “Bank of the Universe” charging consumers 25-30% interest on credit card debts and that such debts are not just and should not be paid. Also, it is worth noting that the Bible is the original authority on what Dr. Vernon McGee (author of “Thru The Bible with J. Vernon McGee”, 1981) called “God’s poverty program”, sort of an unofficial version of bankruptcy before Congress in its infinite wisdom passed the US bankruptcy laws. Ever heard of the King James version of the Lord’s Prayer, “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”? Deuteronomy 15:1 mandates a cal to cancel debts regularly (“At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release”). This Biblical-based debt forgiveness plan for debtors was based upon something called the sabbatical and Jubilee years. During biblical times it was common for no mortgage/debt to go beyond or last more than 7 years! When the seventh year came around, if there was still money outstanding or due on money that had been lent or mortgages that had been made, those debts were all to be canceled out. This cancellation was mandatory, not elective or discretionary with the creditor. The secular and congressional policies now contained in our present day bankruptcy laws follow the biblical model in that the laws allow business and consumers to file bankruptcy (periodically, but not repeatedly) to cancel and to restructure debts, getting a “fresh start”. Texas Twister The underlying themes in the Old Testament within the areas of economic justice/fairness and stability are compassionate treatment of the poor and the importance of preserving the family unit. These goals take priority over the material concerns of repayment of debt. If you are considering bankruptcy, remember what the Bible has to say about debt forgiveness. By Lucy M. I’m in the money! I’m in the money! Or, at least, I thought I was. My palm’s have never itched. But, in the last couple of weeks, both of my palms have been itching. I was thinking that this is it! I was wondering where this money was going to come from. However, after researching the superstition is as follows: “If the palm of your right hand is itchy, then it foretells that money is coming to you, but don’t scratch it as that stops the money from coming! If it’s your left palm that is itchy, then scratch away, as that means that you’ll soon be paying money.” Some say there is another way to stop the money from going out. You simply rub your left palm on wood. Unfortunately, I have been scratching both! Oh, well. Easy come, easy go! The new district-wide theme, iDream. iLearn. iLead. The Future, has captured the hearts and imaginations of children across Rockwall ISD. In partnership with numerous local community service organizations, Rockwall ISD students are set to host Students Serving Others Day (SSO Day) on Saturday, March 26, 2011. This massive community service initiative will take place at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium as well as out in the community at various sites. Elementary students will be stationed at the stadium from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to lead hands-on projects like the Duffle Stuff Project where goodie bags are assembled for women in need. Secondary students will have an opportunity to partner with area non-profit organizations for community service projects throughout the day. SSO Day is a result of Rockwall ISD’s ongoing partnership with the Rachel’s Challenge Organization. RISD’s Director of Counseling Kim West and her staff have continued to promote the kindness and compassion charged mission of Rachel’s Challenge in RISD. The partnership between the two has resulted in three major Rachel’s Rally events that celebrated the kind and compassionate acts of students as well as the Million Meals Project that allowed students from across the district to package one millions meals for the people of Haiti. This year, Rachel’s Rally will look a little different. On Thursday, May 5, RISD will host a virtual rally on all 18 campuses during the school day allowing every single student to participate. Campus-based events and a universal video will recap the Rachel’s Challenge-inspired events that have taken place throughout the school year. Parent and community members will have an opportunity to join in on the virtual rally online at www.rockwallisd.com. Additional community service project ideas are needed for SSO Day. If you know of a need in our community, please contact Donna Barnett at 972-771-0605. When Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865, he was carrying two pairs of spectacles and a lens polisher, a pocketknife, a watch fob, a linen handkerchief, a brown leather wallet containing a five-dollar Confederate note, and nine newspaper clippings, including several favorable to the president and his policies. Given to his son Robert Todd upon Lincoln’s death, these everyday items, which through association with tragedy had become like relics, were kept in the Lincoln family for more than seventy years. Because it is quite unusual for the Library to keep personal artifacts among its holdings, they were not put on display until 1976. 2. Babe Ruth wore a cabbage leaf under his cap to keep him cool. The following is an excerpt from the July 1943 issue of Transportation Magazine. This was written for male supervisors of women in the workforce during World War II, only 60+ years ago! The intent was not to be “funny”. 5.) Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they’ll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Women make excellent workers when they have their jobs set out for them, but they lack initiative in finding work themselves. 1.) Pick young, married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters; they’re less likely to be flirtatious; they need the work or they wouldn’t be doing it; they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently. 2.) When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It’s always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy. 3.) General experience indicates that “husky” girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters. 4.) Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the Texas Twister 10.) Get enough size variety in operator’s uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can’t be stressed too much in keeping women happy. 6.) Whenever possible, let the female employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change. 7.) Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make for some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day. 8.) Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can’t shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency. 9.) Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl’s husband or father may swear vociferously, she’ll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this. AND T E E TO M ’ PRICES E E T RAN ETITORS 20%! I well remember walking the dusty roads, along with others, inviting people to church and handing out candy to the children. I also remember Bro. Molina, a large Hispanic man who began attending our church not long after we moved there. He could sing down God’s anointing, and my dad would often have him sing Bill and Gloria Gaither’s song, “Because He Lives.” Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone, Because I know (Yes, I know) He holds (my) future, My life is worth the living just because He lives. Bro. Molina would always kneel by his pew and give God thanks before he sat down. When I asked him about this, he said that he had once turned his back on God, but God never let go of him. Then my family came and began visiting his children on Saturdays and picking them up for church on Sundays. He said this had convicted him because we cared more about his children’s spiritual welfare than he did. Then Bro. Molina’s stubborn heart melted when he heard his oldest son, a teenager, praying for him night after night. He asked Jesus to forgive his rebellious ways and be his Lord and Savior. From then on, even if he was late to church, he would take time to kneel and thank God for saving him and his family. God is so good! Joyce Bailey is another church member who was much more than just a pew warmer—her lifestyle made a tremendous difference in others. The Baileys and her mother, Sis. Wiley, lived a distance from the church, but they were always faithful and early. If there was anyone in the church you could count on, it was them. Even after Bro. Bailey moved to Heaven, the ladies were unselfish in giving, in working, and in coming to church. Sis. Bailey wore more makeup than most Pentecostal women of that day. (It wasn’t unusual to come away from her warm greeting with a lipstick kiss smudged on your cheek.) I don’t remember hearing her pray loud or raising her hands beyond “half-staff” as we kids would call it, but she loved Jesus and she loved us. We didn’t argue about differences but we worshiped God together and loved each other. Some people would say, “If you need anything, let me know”—then walk away as quickly as they could. But not Sis. Bailey! She would find out what needed to be done in the church or what we needed personally, and she would do everything she could—including enlisting volunteers—to take care of it. How tremendously blessed we were to know this love-centered woman who served God with a servant’s heart! When we first moved to that area, the parsonage wasn’t ready so my mother announced to us children that we had the privilege of “camping out” in the Sunday School rooms on pallets. (This turned out to be a lot less exciting than we had first anticipated, since Mother Texas Twister made us pick up everything each morning in case we had visitors.) Thank God for Sis. Bailey! When she found out where we were staying, she immediately opened her home to us. My mother bravely tried to tell her that we were fine there, but it was no use. Sis. Bailey had set her sail to bless us and we were “forced” to give up the concrete floors for the luxuries of her beautiful home. I can still almost taste her Green Grape Cobbler and ovenbaked bacon. Even after we moved into the parsonage, the Baileys would often take us out for Sunday dinner. Sis. Bailey was the first person I knew who generously used the wealth God had entrusted to her to bless her Pastor and his family. (This was over and above her tithes and offerings.) And she never forgot us children! She loved us like her own grandchildren. For young people who had just been uprooted from their friends and all they knew, this meant the world! I praise God for all those who blessed us. Some are in Heaven now enjoying their reward. I am so thankful that I will see them all again … and get another sweet lipstick kiss on my cheek. 888-355-5263 March, 2011 Page 21 If the March winds are higher than the January and February winds were, we are in trouble. You can use all the excuses you want, but you know exactly what you are doing when you tell your child something negative about your ex. Unless your ex will put your child in danger or put them in unhealthy situations, you should do everything you can to keep a relationship between your child and your ex. I’m not talking about a messy house. I’m talking about extreme situations would need to be present before taking away visitation. I have personally witnessed parents literally having a child in a tug-of –war grip. How stupid is that? The child does not need that in their lives. Be flexible with visitation, and be considerate by being on time for pickup and drop-off. Your problem with your ex should not be your child’s problem. If you are divorced and have small children, you are probably between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. “Here’s a copy of the service,” he said impatiently. “But, you’ll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances.” During the service, the minister paused and said, “Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up.” At that moment, the substitute organist played “The Star Spangled Banner.” And that is how the substitute became the regular organist! March, 2011 thy, the builder of Blarney Castle, being involved in a lawsuit, appealed to Clíodhna for her assistance. She told MacCarthy to kiss the first stone he found in the morning on his way to court, and he did so, with the result that he pleaded his case with great eloquence and won. Thus the Blarney Stone is said to impart “the ability to deceive without offending.” MacCarthy then incorporated it into the parapet of the castle. BEFORE DALE CARNEGIE, THERE WAS THE BLARNEY STONE! According to legend, kissing the stone endows the kisser with the gift of gab (great eloquence or skill at flattery). The stone was set into a tower of the castle in 1446. The castle is a popular tourist site in Ireland, attracting visitors from all over the world to kiss the stone and tour the castle and its gardens. Greenville physician John Vallancey, M.D., was one of the leaders who encouraged the City of Greenville to create the Greenville Hospital Authority for the purpose of purchasing and consolidating three private Greenville hospitals. On Sept. 15, 1960, the Authority began operating Greenville Medical and Surgical Hospitals at two separate locations, on Oneal Street and Stuart Street, and Homer Horton was hired as the first administrator of the district’s hospitals. In May of 1967, the citizens of Greenville voted for a tax-supported hospital district for the purpose of building a new modern hospital. On Aug. 1, 1971, the new 96-bed facility, Citizens General Hospital, opened for business. The 4-story, 80,000-square-foot hospital was built on an 11-acre tract of land on the west central side of Greenville. Ten years later, on Nov. 3, 1981, the citizens of Hunt County voted to expand the hospital district county-wide so 888-355-5263 that the area’s healthcare needs could be met through expansion and equipment acquisition. The expanded district, renamed Hunt Memorial Hospital District, is managed by an elected nine-member board from the four precincts of the county with one at-large representative. Citizens of Hunt County approved a $12 million hospital expansion program, including the purchase of a 30bed general/acute hospital facility in Commerce, on Sept. 24, 1983. Nearly 59,000 square feet (four additional floors) were added in the new construction, and another 13,000 square feet were remodeled. An upgrade of Citizens General Hospital’s equipment was also a part of the construction and expansion that was completed in April of 1987. In June of 1993, the HMHD’s board of directors announced that the local hospitals would partner with the Presbyterian Healthcare System and changed the names to reflect that affiliation. Also that year, hospital officials broke ground for the Professional Building addition on the Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville campus. This 51,500-square-foot addition provides office suites for physicians and other health related services. In September of 1997, another ground-breaking ceremony was held at PHG. This expansion included enlargement of the Emergency and Surgery Departments, the addition of the Truett and Margaret Crim Maternity Center and the Medical Pavilion which contains all outpatient services. The Emergency Department was increased from seven beds to 21 beds, and the Surgery Center was designed to provide both inpatient and outpatient procedures. An open house was held in March of 1998 upon completion of Presbyterian Medical Plaza in Quinlan. This 10,000-square-foot facility includes physician office space, a laboratory, and areas for diagnostic imaging and physical therapy. After meeting all criteria, in March 2001 Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce earned designation as a Critical Access Hospital from the State of Texas Center for Rural Health Initiatives. A year later the Hunt Memorial Hospital District Charitable Health Foundation began pursuing its mission March, 2011 to seek philanthropic support for hospital programs and area healthcare needs. A 30-member independent board of trustees oversees the foundation that has generated nearly $2M in philanthropic support since that time. In May of 2005, voters in the hospital district approved a $24-million bond package to construct a “west wing” of the current structure that would soon house a comprehensive cancer treatment center, an expanded intensive care unit and heart monitoring and medical units. In early fall of 2005, a significant expansion to the Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce campus was announced as plans were made for a 2,000-square-foot facility that would house the Heritage Program for Senior Adults, a new outpatient psychiatric program for older adults in the region. The year 2005 also saw the launching of a comprehensive three-year Service Excellence Initiative that continues to focus on district-wide improvements in patient care, employee retention and satisfaction and physician satisfaction. The program’s goal is to make Hunt Memorial Hospital District the healthcare provider and employer of choice in the region. In 2006 the Greenville campus saw a new 64-slice CT scanner go into service, its first ankle replacement surgery performed and completion of the new rehabilitation and fitness center. Work also began on the “West Wing.” The year 2007 saw the installation of PHG’s new General Electric Essential digital mammography system at The Imaging Center of Greenville, our outpatient diagnostic imaging department. It was the first of its kind installed in Northeast Texas. The year 2008 brought the completion of the West Wing. A grand opening and dedication of the Lou and Jack Finney Cancer Center took place on May 22 with open houses over a four-day period. The first patients in the new facility were in the new Intensive Care Unit which opened on June 2. Upon completion of the West Wing, renovation on the third and fourth floors of the original bed tower began. A minor care clinic at Traders’ Crossing Shopping Center on Highway 34 South is scheduled to open October 10, and the seventh floor has been renovated to accommodate a new Page 27 Quick+Care is open 7 days a week for your convenience, providing walk-in services for patients 3 months and up for treatment of minor illnesses or injuries such as: Infections Minor sprains & strains Minor injuries Flu symptoms Earache Sore throat Minor lacerations Bladder infections Aches & pains The Clinic does not treat serious illness or injury. Understanding Engineers: 5 The graduate with a science degree asks, “Why does it work?” The graduate with an engineering degree asks, “How does it work?” The graduate with an accounting degree asks, “How much will it cost?” The graduate with an arts degree asks, “Do you want fries with that?” Understanding Engineers: 6 Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet. Understanding Engineers: 7 An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess.” He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog then cried out, “If you kiss me and turn me into a princess, I’ll stay with you for one week and do ANYTHING you want.” Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asked, “What is the matter? I’ve told you I’m a beautiful princess and that I’ll stay with you for one week and do anything you want.. Why won’t you kiss me?” The engineer said, “Look, I’m an engineer. I don’t have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that’s cool.” Page 29 Page 30 March, 2011 The Things Kids Say! My oldest son, when he was three, asked his father to buy him something at the store. My husband said, “No, we don’t have enough money for that right now.” My son then asked, “Is it because mommy holds the purse and she doesn’t let you?” ********************************************************** And the most recent from my youngest son, “Why do I have to go to school when I’m never leaving home anyway?” ********************************************************** One morning a mom came up to me and shared a very interesting story from the previous night. It went like this: (Little Boy) Mommy, I want you to read me a book before I go to bed. (Mommy) Okay honey, you pick it out for me. The little boy brings Mommy “The Cat in the Hat” and sits down with him to read it. Mommy gets through about five pages of the story when the little boy asks, “Mommy, how come you don’t taste the pages like Mrs. Cunningham does before she turns them?” ********************************************************** This morning a Kindergartener came up to me at breakfast, looking for her gloves. She said, “Have you seen my gloves? They are pink, and they are kind of shaped like my hand.” ********************************************************** We were at my son’s wedding and we had been taking pre-wedding pictures. I looked at my daughter and said” lets take Jaxon (1 ½) and Lilly (2 ½) for a walk and stretch our legs. As we were walking out the door Lilly stopped and put her hands over her eyes and with a big sob said “Mommy I don’t want my legs stretched.” My daughter and I looked at each other and just about cracked up. I felt so sorry for Lilly; we had a good laugh after all was explained. ********************************************************** My 6 year old son was taking a bath the other night. I ran in to wash his hair and he was trying to get out. I said “We need to wash your hair real quick before you get out”. He sat back down and looked at his fingers (which were wrinkly) and he said, “Oh great, now I’m getting old”. Texas Twister 888-355-5263 March, 2011 Page 31 The Sheer Nightgown.... A husband walks into Victoria ‘s Secret to purchase a sheer negligee for his wife. He is shown several possibilities that range from $250 to $500 in price -- the more sheer, the higher the price. Naturally, he opts for the most sheer item, pays the $500, and takes it home. He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on, and model it for him. Upstairs the wife thinks (she’s no dummy), ‘I have an idea. It’s so sheer that it might as well be nothing. I won’t put it on, but I’ll do the modelling naked, return it tomorrow, and keep the $500 refund for myself.’ She appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose. The husband says, ‘Good Grief! You’d think for $500, they’d at least iron it!’ He never heard the shot. Funeral on Thursday at Noon.
