New Age Children’s Author To Do Book Signing At Brewer Bookstore
CANTON, NY – On Saturday, December
8, 2012 come celebrate with local author
Rayne Storm, from 3pm till 5 pm for a
book signing at the Brewer Bookstore, St.
Lawrence University in Canton, as she unveils her “Elemental Tarot for Kids.” Also
on hand, copies of her book, “Everyday
MAGICK for Children of Earth-based Spiritual Families.”

SLU String Orchestra To Perform
Bach Works In Concert
CANTON - The St. Lawrence University String
Orchestra, under the direction of Christian Hosmer, will present a concert program entitled
“Bach, Back to Back” featuring a variety of works
by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) on Sunday, December 2, at 2 p.m. in Peterson-Kermani
Performance Hall on campus. The event is open to
the public, free of charge.
Selections to be performed include Concerto
in a minor for Violin, the Concerto for Two Violins
in d minor, and first movements from the wellknown Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 2, 3 and

“Sheep May Safely Graze,” “Air on the G String”
and the Badinerie in b minor, plus others.

Crane Candlelight Concerts Broadcast
On Public TV, Starting On Dec. 4
WPBS TV Presents Four Taped Concerts From
The Crane School Of Music This Holiday Season
POTSDAM, NY (11/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Audiences across the U.S.
and Canada will be able to enjoy traditional holiday concerts from The
Crane School of Music stage, in the comfort of their homes again this
year. WPBS Digital Television has again syndicated four Crane Candlelight
Concerts to present throughout the holiday season.
Each year in early December, the Crane Chorus and the Crane Symphony Orchestra come together to present a very special holiday concert. Featuring more than 300 carolers and musicians from the renowned
Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, the concert includes traditional
Christmas and seasonal hymns, along with popular favorites.
In the North Country, WPBS TV, which produces the broadcasts, will
present past Crane Candlelight Concerts starting on Dec. 4 and ending on
Christmas Eve. The schedule is as follows:
“Yuletide Joy,” Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m.
“Family Traditions,” Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m.
“Home & Hearth,” Monday, Dec. 10 at 10 p.m.
“December Wonderland,” Thursday, Dec. 13 at 10 p.m.
“Yuletide Joy,” Monday, Dec. 24 at 10 p.m.
The newest concert, “Yuletide Joy,” which was taped last year, will also
be available to watch online beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 5, on www.
wpbstv.org. Several of the other concerts will also be online, beginning on
Monday, Nov. 26.

Every year, during the first weekend in December, WPBS crew members, with television equipment in tow, invade the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. Since 2001, WPBS Digital TV has recorded and televised the
annual Crane Candlelight Concert, and offers the programs nationally to
other stations.
Don’t miss the chance to hear the magic in person! The 2012 Crane
Candlelight Concerts will be offered on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m. and at
7:30 p.m., in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane

There are literally thousands of offbeat Christmas records…”novelty records” they’re collectively called. I’d like to recommend to you some of
my favorites. If you’re interested, all can be heard,
as of this writing anyway, on YouTube…except for
one. And we might as well start with it…
“Santa Fly”…by Martin Mull 1973 When
you consider all the rarities, oddities, and atrocities you’ll find on YouTube, you wonder how
this one slipped through the cracks. Who else
but Martin Mull would think of combining Santa
Claus with the churning funk Blacksploitation soul
sound of “Super Fly.” But then, that was his job.
Great opening: department store Santa asks the
kid what he wants for Christmas, and he says “I
wanna get DOWN!”

call anti-Christmas records…I Hate Santa, Santa
Hates Me, Christmas Bums Me Out, etc. The most
intense of these is the Violence Against Santa category. Surprisingly popular…but then as Gramps
would say, if everybody liked the same thing,
they’d all be after your Grandmother…no kidding.
Included in this group are a good dozen different
songs about Santa getting stuck in the chimney…
usually he’s rescued in time for Christmas, but,
horrifically enough, not always. Now in this one,
Little Miss Dynamite does explain why she plans
to assault St. Nick, and it’s all in a good cause,
I guess. It’s one of her earliest recordings, she’s
only 11, but the talent and energy that would propel her to stardom is definitely on display. Compare with...
“Are My Ears on Straight?”…by Gayla
Peevey 1953 This tyke from Oklahoma was very
popular as a kid singer, especially Christmas records and a few others, including some for Easter. As she grew older, she tried to translate that
into an adult career, with no success…although
her “Robot Man” from 1960, recorded under
the name of Jamie Horton, is a goofy treat. Her
biggest Yuletide triumph is “I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas.” I always wondered if it was
legit…or just a Dr. Demento-type hoax, as the
line “…and give him [the hippo] his massage”
sounded a bit, um, odd to me. But it was for real,
and was even used by an Oklahoma City zoo in
a campaign to raise money to buy one. “Are My
Ears on Straight?” is from the point of view of
a doll that was broken, taken to the repair shop,
and hopes she’ll be fixed in time for Christmas
morning. A charming little record, although who
in the world would even think of such an idea for
a song? Luckily, someone.
“I Fell Out of a Christmas Tree”…by Little
Rita Faye 1953 Here’s another moppet, with nowhere near the panache nor pipes of Gayla. No,
she wasn’t climbing the tree…that’s how she was
born on December 25th: “I slipped off the highest
limb and tumbled to the floor / No one was there
to pick me up, my folks were all next door.” Stork?
Cabbage patch? Who needs ‘em? The lyrics are as
quirky as the concept…and why it never become
a Christmastime standard is a mystery to me…ho
ho ho. As Rita Faye, no longer “Little,” she tried to
crack the teen market in 1962 with “Salt and Pepper,” a “Mashed Potatoes” answer song…what,
no paprika?
“Can You Fix the Way I Talk For Christmas”…by Joe Pesci 1968 Then we have grownups pretending to be kids. Yes, this is THE Joe
Pesci, calling himself Joe Ritchie, from the LP
“Little Joe Sure Can Sing”…well, no he can’t,
actually. Once he was famous, it was re-released
as a 45 under his real name. The label also credits Frank Vincent…he’s the voice of Santa...Joe’s

lifelong acting buddy, who played Billy “Shine
Box” Batts in “Goodfellas,” and Phil Leotardo on
“The Sopranos.” The song is a take on Porky Pig,
about a little boy who wants to stop stuttering for
Christmas…big surprise, at the end of the song
he does. Even in these politically correct days, you
can still get away with that if it’s done with goodnatured humor…Sylvester Swine’s hilarious “Blue
Christmas” for example. But Joe’s routine here is
mechanical and listless…and extremely unfunny.
Still, a “before they were stars” classic if ever
there was one.
“Santa Got Lost in Texas”…by Michael
Landon 1963 Speaking of Little Joes…from what
seemed like a good idea at the time, a Christmas
LP by the cast of “Bonanza.” It’s a jolly record,
done in a rousing sing-along style. Jeff Carson
recorded a version in 1995, but the original is the
best. And yes, Landon was Jewish, born Eugene
Orowitz on Hallowe’en, 1936…but Joseph Cartwright wasn’t, get it? Mazel tov, pard’ner.
“Donde Este Santa Claus?” by Augie Rios
1958 Another non-PC selection, trending towards
the Speedy Gonzales/Frito Bandidto archetype,
as was typical of the Fifties. But it’s just another
cute little kid singing, it’s in English except for the
question in the title, and you know how on “Santa
Claus and His Old Lady” Cheech starts out with::
“Ma-ma-masita, donde este Santa Cleese…da
vato wit da bony knees...he comin’ down da street
wit no choos on his feet…”? He’s just trying to do
a version of this song…see, you learned something. And before you ask, “vato” is Mexican slang
for “man” or “dude,” man.
“Outer Space Santa” by Lawrence Welk
1958 The decade of 1950s was the Golden Age
of Christmas novelty records, especially the 3
year span from 1957-59…after all, it gave us
the Chipmunks! Especially popular were songs
about satellites, sputniks, flying saucers, and men
from Mars. Tunes like “Santa Meets the Purple
People Eater” by Sheb Wooley, “They Shined Up
Rudolph’s Nose” by Johnny Horton, “Capt. Santa
Claus and his Reindeer Space Patrol” by Bobby
Helms, and tons more. This one features the Lennon Sisters, delightfully low-tech retro sound effects, and incongruent lyrics like: “Outer Space
Santa, shining up the stars / Outer Space helpers,
packing them in jars.” Jars of stars? Huh? Hey,
don’t worry about it…it’s spacey!
“Father Christmas” by the Kinks 1977…
Here’s another Violence Against Santa number…
one of the few hard-rock Christmas songs that really works. Ruffians are attacking Santa for giving
toys to “all the little rich boys.” Is there nothing
Ray Davies couldn’t do…apparently not.
“Little Mary Christmas” by Roger Christian 1962…Don’t get me wrong…the Weirdmas
songs I’ve mentioned are quite entertaining and
I enjoy listening to them…but this final one is
an exception. You have to hear it once to believe
it, but then never again. Roger Christian was a
car-crazy Los Angeles DJ who wrote lyrics for
the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, many others. But
this is a rather creepy Yuletide misstep. See,
Little Mary is a physically challenged orphan, and
Roger’s dour recitation sets us up for an even bigger tragedy, but it’s all a narrative trick, and we
get a happy ending after all..but who needs it?
It’s smarmy and unsettling all at the same time,
and Roger’s tone of voice is almost menacing.
This used to be hard to find, but it’s now on a CD
Christmas collection assembled by John Waters,
of “Hairspray” fame.

Potsdam and Video Games, a
Short but Growing History

If you asked people around the world about
cultural artifacts that originated in Potsdam,
New York, chances are Wes Craven’s Nightmare
on Elm Street would be the most recognized.
Although the films weren’t made in Potsdam,
and Potsdam isn’t even the setting, Mr. Craven
was a former teacher in the area and wrote early
horror stories here. It has been confirmed that
our own Elm street, and a recently demolished
fraternity house, helped inspire his most well
known work. When I lived in London, UK and
was moving back to Potsdam (coincidentally to
an apartment on Elm Street) my British movers
seemed quite entertained by the fact that the
packages they were loading were heading for
the infamous street.
Unlike Wes Craven’s films, which are very
loosely linked to our area, some influential and
upcoming video games have real roots here. The
most influential of these games stem from a well
known international game designer who also coincidentally lived on Elm Street. Jason Rohrer’s
name is well known in game design and development circles. When I am talking to people unfamiliar with game development I often liken him
to The Velvet Underground, a band that may not
have been commercially successful, but instead
had a massive influence on other musicians.
People in our area often remember him as the
guy who spent months fighting village government so he wouldn’t have to mow his lawn. It
was his unkempt lawn that served as the setting
of his interview with Esquire magazine. (During
the interview he called the police on a village
employee who mowed a strip of his lawn near
the road) Jason also wrote the Sudoku puzzles
in North Country This Week, and a copy of the
book he wrote with his wife about breastfeeding resides in the village library. He was much
like many of the intelligent and mildly eccentric
people who make Potsdam their home. Thanks
to our universities, Potsdam is home to many
people who have influence around the world.
From ceramicists to scientists, whenever you go
to the IGA in Potsdam there is a good chance
the person in front of you in line is well known
around the world. Although Jason and his family
have since moved on, the video games he created here got the attention of some very powerful and influential people.
What is generally thought of as Jason’s most
well known Potsdam-era game is Passage. The
game features a compelling message and what
I consider one of the most clever uses of retroesque pixel art in gaming. If you are a Call of Duty
player or a Final Fantasy aficionado it is going to
take a mental readjustment to play Passage. A
game of Passage takes five minutes from beginning to end. At first glance it looks like a game
for the Atari 2600. However underlying the brief
gameplay and big pixels is a beautifully crafted
message that makes the game art. Your charac-
ter’s movement through the game space represents movement through life. Certain decisions
influence decisions you can make later on. For
example getting ‘married’ in the game changes
the speed and distance you move, but also stops
you from passing through certain areas of the
game. When I first encountered the game I was
so put off by the primitive graphics I didn’t even
play it for the full five minutes. The last time I
attended Game Developer’s Conference a game
developer from Lucasarts (the video game wing
of George Lucas’ recently sold empire) talked
about Passage as where video games should be
going in the future. Afterwards I decided to give
the game more exploration, and now I show it to
virtually all my classes as both a digital art form
and as a life lesson. It is tough to make young
people understand how decisions they make
today influence tomorrow, especially when it
is tough for them to visualize tomorrow. That’s
what Passage is all about, and why anybody in
our area should take a few minutes to download
and explore this piece of Potsdam history.
At the other end of the video game spectrum
is Retro-Affect, a video game design company
created by alumni of Clarkson University’s Digital Arts & Sciences program. Founders Kyle Pulver, David Carigg, and Peter Jones met at Clarkson, and their game Snapshot is available for
the PC, Playstation 3, and most recently for the
Playstation Vita (Sony’s new handheld). Even
more exciting is that across the United States
the game is installed on Vitas in store displays,
meaning nationwide exposure for a game with
roots here. Unlike Jason Roher’s games, Snapshot isn’t meant for you to explore the human
condition or to press the limits of what a videogame can be. Snapshot is meant to be fun, and
fun it is. Younger developers, like the crew at
Retro-Affect, are making games that are based
on the gameplay styles of their childhood, but
at the same time press these genres beyond
what was possible in Super Nintendo days. In
film terms it is like modern filmmakers returning
to genres like the western, and bringing along
the trappings of today’s moving making. The
digital distribution model that put Snapshot in
the Playstation store and Valve’s Steam system
for PC means smaller startup developers have
a foot in the door. I have a feeling that RetroAffect has a strong future in games, and if you
like puzzle games or have nostalgia for platform
jumping games of the past, you will be pleased
with Snapshot.
One of the big topics for business people
in the video game industry is that most video
games are made in Silicon Valley and in Tokyo.
These happen to be two of the most expensive
places on Earth to make video games. There is
no reason more video games couldn’t be made
in St. Lawrence county, and the success of the
few people who have started their video game
development here should be encouragement to
those who want to try.

On Friday, November 2nd, CRUNCHENSTEIN was “Caught in the Act” while performing at The Canoe
Place Inn, in Hannawa Falls, NY. Members: Howard Hubbard -- Lead Guitars/Vocals, Tim Damon -Drums, Brandon Bolster -- Bass/Vocals, Mark Hodgkins -- Lead Vocals/guitar. All I can say about this
band is, “Great band, great music, fantastic song selections!” When you think CRUNCHENSTEIN you
really need to think monstorous sound and showmanship. The band name is fitting considering the way
they crunch and mash up songs to make them thier own. Let’s start with the drum kit or should I say
platform. I call it the BEAST. Tim Damon, owner of Damon Drums, has put together a kit that leaves me
speachless. Let’s just leave it at “The BEAST.” Tims drumming style is so fitting for this band. Howard
adds his style of crunch to every song. The guitar leads are flawless and Howard shreds with the best
of them. Brandon is the perfect blend for this band. His bass lines are solid. Mark adds energy to the
band. Not that they need more energy, however his lively lyrics and outward performance adds the added
CRUNCH to make it all come together. Their major influences include: ACDC, Aerosmith, Kim Mitchell,
Judas Priest, Live, G-N-R, Green Day, Hendrix, Ra, Shinedown, Scorpions, Collective Soul, Ted Nugent,
Van Halen, Theory of a Deadman, The Cult, U2, etc. If there is one band that needs to be added to your
“Must See” list, CRUNCHENSTEIN would be it.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals To Perform
‘10-Year Anniversary’ Show At SLU
CANTON - Grace Potter and the Nocturnals will
return to the place it all started 10 years ago - St.
Lawrence University in Canton - for an anniversary
show as part of their 2013 Roar Tour.
The concert will be Sunday, February 10, in
Leithead Field House at 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale
on Saturday, December 1, at noon, at the Sullivan
Student Center Information Desk and online. With
a St. Lawrence I.D., student tickets are $10; all
others are $15. A limited number of tickets will be
available to the general public for this concert and
all tickets are general admission - no seating.
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals’ self-made 2005
debut album, Nothing but the Water revealed a
musically sophisticated young band inspired by
the music of the late 60s/early 70s and fronted
by a then-21-year-old dynamo whose nuanced
singing, organ-playing and songwriting belied her
age. The follow-up, 2007’s This Is Somewhere,
confirmed that the band had no interest in following trends but was instead in pursuit of timeless expression as it forged its identity. On 2010s
self-titled third album, GPN, toughened by a halfdecade of nonstop roadwork, flexed their rock ‘n’
roll muscles and confirmed that they were in it for
the long haul.
Seven years after hitting the radar, GPN take
an exponential leap with the widescreen opus The
Lion The Beast The Beat, released in 2012. With
this musically combustible and conceptually dazzling work, the Vermont-based band forcefully
takes its place alongside the best of its peers while
building on the rich legacy of its inspirations.
During this a la carte age, Grace Potter and the
Nocturnals have boldly pushed against the current, making a bona fide album that demands to
be heard in its entirety.
Potter was a student at St. Lawrence for two
years, and formed the band at St. Lawrence with
drummer Matt Burr, a Class of 2003 graduate.
They are joined by Scott Tournet, Benny Yurco and
Michael Libramento.

CD Review
Review of The Road – Celia Evans

They say you can’t judge a book by looking at
the cover, but the front and back covers of Folksinger/ Songwriter Celia Evans’ latest CD “The
Road” give a pretty good indication of what this
recording holds. The pictures portray a woman
resolutely walking a winding gravel road, holding
on to nothing but her guitar. On the front we see
her back, and vise versa. The faded edges of the
photographs give a hint of a nostalgic aura, but the
stride is determined and purposeful, ever moving
on.
These twelve original songs seem fit those images. This is Ms. Evans fourth CD, and in many
ways her best so far. Although not well known as
a performer outside of the Adirondack Mountains
of Northern New York, the thoughts and feelings
she writes and sings about transcend geographical borders. The lyrics paint vivid pictures, and
Celia’s voice, singing melodies and harmonies,
ranges from a husky whisper to lilting and soaring,
often within the same song. In these postcards
from the winding, and sometimes lonely, Road of
life, Evans’ subject material covers romantic relationships, philosophy, nature, and parenting with
disarming and sometimes brutal honesty. She can
turn a good phrase with any gifted songwriter, and
has a flair for the double entendre.
The music is (almost) all acoustic, and as
with her previous albums, enhances the beauty
of the songs. Recorded by Roy Hurd at Hurdsong Studios in Lake Clear, NY and mastered by
Mark Elliot at Nashville’s Cub Creek Sound, this
is a very well recorded, mixed, and produced
CD; thoughtfully arraigned. George Viscome
plays his understated bass on nearly all tracks,
and John Foster handles most of the percussion
and drums. Jim Schacher adds acoustic leads,
whimsical and meandering on the liberating
opening track “Just Because”, focused delightful triads and arpeggios on “I Still Believe”, and
a sweet dobro line on “Grace,” on which Evans
sings a sort of round with herself.
“Chickadee”, an upbeat, almost bluegrass
number full of bits of wisdom, features the inter-
play of Hurd’s banjo with Daun Reuter’s peppy
mandolin. Jeff Rendinaro’s harmonica punctuates
the introspective title track “The Road.”
The hunting “Doppelganger”, with Doug
Moody’s melancholy fiddle, gives the feeling of
stepping into an disconcerting Twilight Zone episode. Every day is Valentine ’s Day in “Romance”,
which should at least help Hallmark sell a few
cards, and be a boost to local florists and chocolate confectioners.
Perhaps the prettiest song on this CD is “More
Than One Good Way”, with its’ horticultural imagery. Evans shows her guitar versatility, alternating between rhythmic strumming and concise
fingerpicking while Reuter’s mandolin line weaves
its way through the song.
“It’s Not You” is a mother’s love note to her
daughters and is highlighted by a captivating flute
intro by Mary Lou Reid and some nice slide licks.
Although written about the Adirondacks,
“Hopeful Landscape” could be about any special
place in the world. Cathy Marczyk’s hammer dulcimer adds an Appalachian feel to this hymn-like
anthem. It’s a song that should be taught to gradeschoolers as an aid to learning real environmentalism; a modern day answer to Woody Guthrie’s
“This Land is Your Land”. That isn’t surprising, as
Ms. Evans’ “day job” is an environmental professor at Paul Smith’s College. And “Hold On” continues that mentoring theme, encouraging another
generation of idealists to keep pushing forward.
The album concludes with the slightly bawdy,
slightly tongue in cheek “In The Company of Adirondack Women.” It’s a chick song, not hard to
imagine that it would be a favorite around Girl
Scout campfires, but probably most guys who’ve
ever canoed or hiked the Adirondack wilderness
would have to admit to wishing for one of those
“Adirondack Women” to come their way. Larry
Stone lays aside his Telecaster to help out on National steel guitar, and his picking adds resonant
texture to the song.
So there you have it. Guess you can tell I’ve
really enjoyed this CD, and think you will too if you
buy it.

Chief among the gripes: Jeff Gordon’s retaliatory
act of intentionally wrecking Clint Bowyer near the
end, and the crash at the very end after NASCAR
officials failed to detect a stream of oil left by Danica Patrick’s Chevy that resulted in a huge crash at
the same time Harvick was taking the checkered
flag.
“That wreck happened on the front stretch because there was oil all over it,” runner-up Denny
Hamlin said. “Ray Charles could see that.”
“I’m really disappointed in the way the race was
called,” added Childress.
Keselowski spoke of “a double standard,” dating
back to his runner-up finish
a week earlier in Texas.
“I spent a whole week being bashed by half a dozen
drivers about racing hard
and how I’m out of control
and have ‘a death wish,’ and
then I see (stuff) like that,”
he said. “These drivers just
tried to kill each other.
“It’s just ridiculous, and they should be ashamed.”
Owner Michael Waltrip -- yes, his team fields Bowyer’s Toyota -- called Gordon’s action “a cowardly,
chicken move.”
The pit crews of Gordon and Bowyer engaged in a
full-fledged brawl in the garage around Gordon’s
wrecked Chevy.
Meanwhile, Keselowski escaped with a 20-point
edge in points over Jimmie Johnson entering the
season’s final race. He began the Phoenix International Raceway event trailing Johnson by seven.
Even if Johnson wins the Ford 400 at HomesteadMiami Speedway, Keselowski can win the Sprint
Cup championship by finishing 15th.
Tire failure caused Johnson to crash and limp to a
32nd-place finish.
“It’s way, way out of our control after the problem
we had,” Johnson said.
