The surrounding community at Wallowa Lake is reminiscent of a Swiss alpine village. It features attractions such as a tramway to the top of 8,200-foot Mt. Howard with views of the Wallowa Lake basin and the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. The unspoiled wilderness area has small, sparkling lakes scattered at the base of 10,000-foot peaks and is a paradise for hikers, horseback riders and naturalists. Trails lead up the east and west forks of the Wallowa River from the trailhead. Hat Point Viewpoint, 54 miles northeast, overlooks the Snake River’s mile-deep Hells Canyon, the deepest gorge in North America. The final 24-mile segment of the gravel road to the viewpoint is steep and narrow. To the west, you can head up the Lostine River Canyon into the heart of the high country south of Lostine and Highway 82. Joseph Canyon Viewpoint is 30 miles north of Enterprise on State Highway 3. Please contact the US Forest Service for information, maps and road conditions for these Wilderness trail heads and Hells Canyon areas at 541-426-5546.
