SPY A CASSOWARY Look out for the endangered cassowary, Australia’s largest flightless bird which is commonly seen around the rainforest in Mission Beach. The males are the SNAGS of the bird world, incubating the eggs and caring for the young long after the female has gone in search of a new partner. 41. Formed some 190,000 years ago, the tubes spilled out enough magma to fill Sydney Harbour four times. See the anchor from Captain James Cook’s vessel, the Endeavour, which has been recovered from the reef where he ran aground near Cooktown. Housed in the James Cook Museum at historic Cooktown, it is part of an enormous collection tracing Cook and the Endeavour’s journeys. 52. KAYAK THROUGH THE RAINFOREST Spotting a turtle may be a little passé for the kids, but they’ll love following one downstream as they paddle a kayak to a sandy rainforest beach for a picnic or gather speed over easy rapids.
