BridgeMill Golf Academy
“Our
Goal is to Help You Enjoy Your Golf More”
Tips From The Pro
Speed in the Wrong Place Kills
Most average golfers have too much speed in the transition from the
top of their back swing into the downswing and therefore tend to have
one of two problems.
1. The club tends to get off-plane right away because of the “yank”
from the top and the club usually swings on an out to in plane.
2.The wrists get un-cocked too early and therefore the clubhead gets
to the ball too early which leads to inconsistency of contact as well as a
loss of power.
So, as the late great Bobby Jones used to say; “Start your downswing
in an unhurried manner.”
Best Wishes for your success!
Tom Losinger, PGA Master Professional

TrackMan at the BridgeMill Golf Academy
The Truth Teller
One of the best things about using the TrackMan technology is that it
measures exactly what the club is doing through impact. Therefore it is
extremely easy to see what your tendencies are in making the ball go
where it does and then to make minor adjustments to become more
consistent. Istead of just looking at video or listening to your friends,
you will know exactly what is happening and how to improve it. I
promise you will have a better understanding of your swing and how to
make it more consistent after just a brief encounter with “The Truth
Teller”.
TrackMan and BioSwing Dynamics is an unbeatable combination to
game improvement. I would be pleased to show you how!

Combining our June Par 3 tournament and Girls Night Out was one of Pam and Carol’s most brilliant ideas!
June 12th all holes at BridgeMill were turned into par 3’s which was a fun challenge for the 27 ladies that were

awarded compliments of Arlene Campbell, owner of Campbell Goodyear. First place gross went to Jean
Landmesser, net to Chris Loomis. Second place gross winner was Char Bailey, net was Arlene Campbell. Third
place gross went to Kathy Maynard, net was Diana Morris. All winners received a free oil change for their vehicles
as well as Pro Shop credit. Closest to the pin winners were Caroline Zipkin (hole 5), Arlene Campbell (hole 8),
Vickie Baranowski (hole 12) and Jean Landmesser (hole 16). Each winner received a certificate for free oil change
as well as an emergency light to keep in their car.

Ankle Sprains Lead to Tennis Elbow
By, Dr. Ross Brakeville, PT, DPT, STC
Tennis elbow straps have more coverage on ALTA courts than cloth in a convent. According to
The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 40% - 50% of all tennis players develop symptoms
about the elbow sometime in their career. Tennis elbow is a painful condition affecting the
tendons originating on the outside of the elbow and attach to bones in the back of the wrist,
hand and fingers. These tendons are responsible for normal function of the hand. When
aggravated, pain occurs with activities such as shaking hands, pouring drinks, pulling bed
covers up, hitting tennis balls, etc. At its worst, night pain transforms a soothing sound
machine into a Siamese cat fight.
Tennis elbow is microscopic tears of the tendons at the elbow. This most often results from overuse, which can occur
when demands go up with typing, painting, pulling weeds, housework, etc. More often however, the muscles and
tendons are worn-out due to poor mechanics. For example, in tennis, hitting late, using faulty techniques to serve,
sifting through bushes for 5 minutes to keep from opening a new $1.95 can of Penn 3’s, etc. force the wrist and hand
to work harder. Additionally, past injuries, like a simple ankle sprain, if not treated, leads to compensations such as a
change in footwork and inefficient stroke mechanics.
Conservative (non-surgical) management of tennis elbow is the initial treatment strategy and successful in over 85% of
cases. Treatments initially focus on managing symptoms and to stimulate healing of the tendon. Passive modalities
such as heat, ice, anti-inflammatory medications (including corticosteroid injection), ultrasound, bracing and an Alaskan
cruise can be helpful but are limited. Studies show that up to 72% of those who just used passive treatments including
corticosteroid injections had recurrence of symptoms. However, coupling passive treatments with prescribed exercises
addressing not only the tendon but factors adding stress to the tendon have the best outcome both in the short and
long term.
So what about ankle injuries and tennis elbow? Do ankle exercises cure tennis elbow? Ankle sprains cause a chain
reaction of issues that put knees, hips, backs, shoulders, elbows and a checking account at jeopardy. Not to mention,
the number one risk factor for an ankle sprain is a previous ankle sprain. Although treating elbow
injuries with foot
exercises may seem a little extreme, the take home message is to identify and treat not just the condition but its
source.
Finally, if you mark each spring, summer, fall and winter by the start of each tennis season, a review of your mechanics
by both a tennis professional and medical expert can be invaluable to performance levels and injury prevention.
Dr. Ross Brakeville is a Physical Therapist specializing in Sports Medicine, to include injury prevention, with a focus on
kids and adults who want to play like one. He is owner of Woodstock Physical Therapy & Performance Institute located
in Towne Lake, and partner at Georgia Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine outside gates of BridgeMill. (770) 516-9191

Tip from the Pros . . . . .
Creating Good Doubles Chemistry
The standard definition of a good doubles player rarely includes any reference
to good emotional or communication skills, however, these are critical to
successful play. Tennis partnerships can be like a friendship or marriage and
the ability to bring out the best in each other is what makes a good one.
Here are some fundamental rules for building a good doubles partnership.
• Respect your partner. Treat your partner the way you would like to
be treated at all times
• Respect your opponents.
No one wants to have a partner
that creates conflict on the court. Take a breath if you feel you
are losing your composure.
• When your partner loses a critical point, compliment the
opponent for a good shot. NEVER criticize your partner for a
bad shot. Sometimes IT just happens.
• Be careful what you are telling your partner with your body
language.
• Use the word “we” a lot and MEAN IT! Always share the
credit and the blame.
• Never take your frustration out on your partner . . . NEVER!!
• Figure out a way to keep the game fun for both of you.
Smile, crack a joke, keep it light.
• Do not coach your partner. You will create more mental
pressure for your partner rather than help at this time.
• Be positive, show high energy and enthusiasm especially
during tough times.
Build your partner up with positive
feedback and encouragement.
The ability to create good chemistry on the tennis court is a skill that
will improve your winning percentage and will make you the type of
player that people want to play with and teams seek to recruit.
Reminder
Please check in with the Pro Shop attendant prior to play. The courts are in
high demand and checking in ensures that you will not be bumped off the
court in the middle of a match because it was previously reserved. It also
helps the staff knows what courts are being used and who is on them.
Tennis courts are for BridgeMill Athletic Club Members and their guests.
Accompanied guest fees are $10 per person. Athletic Members and their
guests are also required to pay the $10 court fee. Court fees should be paid
before play. Unaccompanied guests are not permitted to use the courts.

Fitness
Center
Update
Progress is moving along well
on the expansion with a
projected opening date in mid
to late September. Several
new cardio pieces and
strength pieces have already
arrived and available for use.
A few more of these items are
expected in the upcoming
weeks.
Three Pilates Reformers are
currently in house with classes
currently starting up. The
Cadillac, Chair and Box are
also planned as part of the
new Pilates studio.
The aerobic room will get new
accessory items to include
exercise balls, dumbbells, bars
and storage areas.
Sarah Bentley, owner of My Platinum Pilates, is a resident
of Lake Arrowhead, former English teacher and published
author. She received her Pilates certification through
Balanced Body University and teaches private sessions out of her home
studio. In addition, she has taught clients at Midtown Athletic Club in Marietta,
Body Awareness Studio in Buckhead, and Absolute Pilates in Woodstock. Her
clients have ranged from former NFL players to amateur athletes in the metro
Atlanta area. Her classical Pilates training allows her to create individualized
workout programs for each client. She especially likes working with senior
clients to help them regain total body movement. Sarah is available for
individual and group training sessions and can be reached at 404-754-0517.
What is Pilates?
Our bodies are designed to move. Yet often our movements, or lack of
movements, cause our bodies to lose the strength, balance and flexibility
needed to enjoy active, healthy lifestyles. We become stiff, unbalanced and,
at times, injured. Over time, we feel constant aches and pain and loose our
full range of motion. Many of these issues are due to weakness in our core
muscles – the ones designed to protect our organs, stabilize our spine, and
support the movement of our arms and legs. The Pilates method of exercise,
developed by Joseph Pilates, is designed to gently correct these alignment
problems and teach the body to engage its core muscles for movement. With
regular workouts you will have a leaner, stronger body, a greater range of
motion and increased stamina. Or as Joe put it: “In 10 sessions you will feel
the difference. In 20 you will see the difference. And in 30, you'll be on your
way to having a whole new body."
What will Pilates do for you?
Tone your body without creating "bulky" muscles or compromising your joints
and spine
Improve your athletic performance - golf, tennis, running, cycling, hiking
Improve movement in your joints, back, shoulders, hips and knees
Improve your flexibility, posture, stability and balance
Decrease or eliminate back pain
Improve your body awareness and the mind-body connection
Complement your weight management goals
Just a few Pilates Reformer Exercises!
Look forward to the addition of
an outdoor workout area for
Boot Camp style workouts.
More information on upcoming
programs/opening dates will
be in the September newsletter.

BridgeMill Sixes
Service League
The Bridge Mill Sixes Service League had a busy and productive summer helping the community and making a
difference in the lives of children and families in Cherokee County. The ladies and their families made 2500 sandwiches
for MUST’s Summer Lunch program helping those in need. In addition, we participated in Give A Kid A Chance that
occurred on July 19 at First Baptist Church in Canton by supplying 500 hygiene bags that we assembled through
donations and purchases. These were great “hands on” examples of our work in the community.
Our biggest Fall event is in full swing! Save the date of September 26, Friday for our 5th Annual Golf FORE Charity
Tournament. To date, we have raised over $55,000 for more than 10 local charities. How can you help? We would
love you and your friends to play in our event, to sponsor a hole, be a corporate sponsor, donate a silent auction item,
or purchase a raffle ticket (1 for $10 or 3 for $25) for some great items that include an ipad with Retina Display,
Microsoft Surface 2, GoPro Hero, BOSE Noise Cancelling Quiet Comfort Headphone, American Express Gift Card,
Garmin Approach GPS Watch, BOSE sound link portable blue tooth speaker. For more information, please contact
Suzanne Taylor at suzanne@bsslgolf.org or register at our website, www.bsslgolf.org
We are also proud to announce that we raised more than $5000 for Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society
which was rescheduled for this Summer. If you are interested in donating or joining next year’s team, contact
for
additional
information.

Take a look at the two photos above. Hard to believe it is the same street! The photo on the left was taken in 2002
and the photo on the right was taken in 2014. The street is Deer Park Trail. What a difference mature landscape does
to the streetscape (the ARC would say “see this is why we don’t like to approve tree removal”). Thanks Mitch Waldman
for contributing the photos!
The HOA office sells replacement mailboxes, numbers and posts. If your box is damaged, dented, and rusted, please
contact the office to make arrangements to purchase a new box. If you choose to repaint your rusted box, please go
to Home Depot and look for Rust-Oleum “Hammered Black” #7215. Home Depot has a “BridgeMill” display. If you
repaint the box, use your best craftsmen skills to spray evenly!
If you are already thinking about the Fall yard sale, it is scheduled for September 20th. Mark your calendars! If you are
holding your own private yard sale during the summer, please do not tape signs to our sign posts or place signs at our
entrances. If we permit 1 owner to place personal signs then we would have to be consistent and allow all 2700+
owners to place large neon signs at our entrances. We all probably agree that these signs detract from the appearance
of our entrances. We appreciate your cooperation!
If you observe under-aged drivers driving golf carts in the community, please call the sheriff’s office.
