We have continued toward our goal of providing real, tangible and valuable benefits to our members and the entire jewelry industry. We have thrived at a time when other associations have fallen upon hard times. So, what have we gained? The INSTORE Show last April proved to be the perfect time to launch two major undertakings. The first was the announcement of an historic agreement between the Chicago Jewelers Association and The United States Postal Service. The agreement provides for a 14.5% Express Mail discount and a 7% Priority Mail discount to our members. This is a benefit unmatched by any other association. At the same time we announced the formation of The Chicago Jewelers Association Crime Alert Network for the greater Chicago area. There had not been a dedicated, cohesive and timely alert network prior to this time. The Crime Alert Network has been active and has provided area jewelers with warnings of criminal activities and other lurking dangers to our community. If you have been reading the trade papers and magazines you have seen the CJA mentioned or quoted in a number of articles. This year we are undertaking to expand the Crime Alert Network to the entire State Of Illinois. The CJA website has been upgraded and expanded. Gary Dolinko of Mid-States Recycling and Refining has been instrumental in managing the process. The site has become a go-to place for people interested in our Association and looking for information about our benefits and activities. We added IDEX (International Diamond Exchange) Online discounted membership to our roster of benefits. As a member of the CJA you are able to receive a 50% discount on IDEX Online which allows you to access their international online diamond trading floor where you can buy or sell with more than 800 suppliers from all over the world. The next major benefit came in the form of a discounted parking program for our members. An agreement with LAZ Parking Chicago allows Chicago Jewelers Association members and their employees to park in the underground Millenium Park and Grant Park garages at a steeply discounted rate. The discount applies to both the monthly and daily rates thereby creating an attractive benefit for downtown members Continued on page 2 and suburban members. 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Continued From Page 1 The International Watch and Jewelry Guild (IWJG) held a show in Chicago for the first time in 12 years. The CJA had an arrangement to allow CJA members to attend at no cost. This was accomplished through two founding members of the IWJG, Howard Frum and Fred Hakimian. Both are active CJA members. The offer has been repeated for the show in July, here in Chicago. The CJA Scholarship Program awarded 5 scholarships last year to aid inner-city high school graduates in the Chicago area. We are very proud of the fact that since 1992 the CJA has awarded 26 scholarships totaling $114,000 and has helped educate, engineers, doctors, lawyers and teachers. The CJA Scholarship Program is guided by CJA Board Member Veronica Cardenas. Last October 28th we held a very successful social event that started with dinner at Corcoran’s Grill where more than 50 members and guests dined before heading down the street to Zanies Comedy Club for an evening of laughter and good cheer. The joint Chicago Jewelry Associations Holiday Party in early December was a grand affair! The stellar event was co-sponsored by CJA and the Women’s Jewelers Association (WJA). It was held at Wildfire where a crowd of more than 100 met over a wonderful dinner. After dinner everyone had a chance to win prizes from a drawing which sent more than half of the attendee’s home with a gift. The gifts ranged from high-end watches to restaurant gift certificates and silver ingots. Everyone watched to see who won which gifts. Our success was assured through the hard work of Howard Frum (Howard Frum Jewelers), Gary and Jane Dolinko ( Mid-States Recycling and Refining), Ruth Thuston (Circa), Bob and Arlene Previti (Fantasy Diamonds) and Taryn Hyman (Lubin- Bergman Org.). Following a year of conversation, on January 1st, 2010, the Chicago Jewelers Association and The Illinois Jewelers Association joined and became one organization. With this agreement the CJA added nearly 100 new members. We also added two new members to our board; John Reed of Champaign, IL and Terry Davis of Charleston, IL. We look forward to meeting the new members from around the state. To that end we are sponsoring with the WJA an event on April 24th, 2010; an evening cruise on Lake Michigan. Our hope is that all of our members and prospective members will come out for a wonderful relaxed evening of city views, food and drink. Continued on page 3 2 President’s Message Continued from page 2 In January we had an outing to a Chicago Bulls Game. It was a great way to relax following the Holiday Rush. The Bulls played the Detroit Pistons in what turned out to be a blowout win for the Bulls. Not all of the tickets were taken, so we donated some tickets to inner-city students and their teachers. It was much appreciated. Myriam and Tom Tashey of Professional Gem Sciences offered a great new benefit for members of the CJA. They now offer 15% off their gem grading and appraising services. They offer expert, professional service and a quick turn around. Finally, the Field Museum had an exhibit entitled “The Nature of Diamonds”. Allen Lipscher (Global Diamonds, Inc.) took the reins and put on a very lively and educational morning for those who attended. There was a light breakfast followed by a terrific slide show and lecture by Fred Goynshor, a retired jeweler known to many of the attendees. Even a group of jewelers can learn something new about diamonds! We will have an annual meeting and dinner in mid-May. More information will be forthcoming. Going forward we are planning an event downstate for the fall. Stay tuned for more information. We will be at the INSTORE Show in April and hope many of you will stop at the CJA booth and introduce yourselves. We will also be at the IWJG Show in July and hope to see many of you take advantage of the opportunity to attend a show that is not open to everyone. We are starting to plan this year’s Holiday Party. More information will be coming to you soon. Howard Frum Jewelers 5 S. One of the suspects smashed the driver’s side window and threatened the jewelers with a knife. The other two suspects snatched a lap top and backpack containing a large quantity of jewelry merchandise. The suspects slashed the car’s tires, took the keys and fled to a white, 1990 Nissan Maxima that was waiting for them. RECOMMENDATIONS: Parking lots are the most Plantation, FL – February 4, 2010 A salesperson drove to a McDonald’s after a sales call and went in. When he came back to his car he saw that his car had a flat tire. He drove to a gas station, tried to put air in his tire, and realized that the tire had been tampered with or he had a blowout. He called his road service company who arrived in 30-45 minutes. The service company employee jacked up the car and they removed five cases from the chained trunk and put them on the rear seat. Two masked suspects then threw the salesperson to the ground while a third suspect removed the five cases and put them in a red van driven by an Hispanic male. Two more male suspects then tried to enter the truck of the service company employee to take the keys, while they also slashed the tires of the truck.
