It is a WOW FACTOR that turns on imaginations. It reference is in our most vivid descriptions as we describe ‘cutting edge’ technology, or the outside ‘edge of the envelope’ of performance. As one of the most sought after warrior treasures over the centuries, the use of swords has been involved in the civilization of every culture on the planet since primitive times. And our collective fascination with it borders on some sort of almost genetic connection with it. Over the centuries swords became highly prized for their collector value due to the artful approach sword makers took toward making them beautiful and the degree of difficulty connected with making three-foot razor blades hard enough to hold an edge, and flexible enough to withstand the tremendous forces of shock during impact without breaking. Today more and more people are looking for ways to capitalize on the current sword trend sweeping across the globe that has steadily grown over the past decade. In response to that growing interest, various martial arts equipment manufactures have produced specially designed padded flexible impact batons for weapon sparring. With a minimum of safety equipment and without the expensive cost of Kendo Bogu, the practice of ‘Goshinken’, ‘Chanbara’ and other “sword based” combat sports spare with these padded instruments to simulate real sword duels. The realism of the experience is determined by the practice that is chosen. It is this aspect of ‘realism’ that has eluded school owners who have attempted to impliment sword programs in their school ciriculums and tournaments. Time and again their sword sparring programs started with great enthusiasm and then repeatedly fizzled out. The big question becomes ‘WHY’? Why are so many people, adults and kids, fascinated by swords and sword play yet almost no one from mainstream kick/punch schools have been able to make their programs last and grow to sufficient numbers to capitalize on the tremendous world wide interest in this ‘King’ of the weapon arts. Really the answer is very simple. School owners have spent their time and energy bringing the best of what they know to the table for their students and schools through thousands of seminars, event promotions and demonstrations in the empty hand arts illustrating self defense and sparring techniques. What they’ve overlooked is that as hard as they work on kata and fighting in their schools, sword was really no different. As a process oriented practice, sword in the past has been a long-term study that took years to become something that could be seen as actual swordsmanship. Like any other martial art, actual swordsmanship should work as well in kata, as it does in target cutting for adults, or combat and sparring contests. Plus, training with swords for kids has always seemed out of the question for most people. And, of course, no one in their right mind would put a live sword in a kids, or, for that matter, in an adults hands without the proper instruction and guidance. When it comes to weapons sparring for kids and swords we must remember that kids are smart. Even small kids recognize that random tags and flailing with a ‘padded flexible sword look alike’ doesn’t hold much fascination C WAX WOOD STAFF DURABLE VINYL SHEATH RUBBER SHEATH 5/8" FOAM PADDING PVC TUBE 3/16" FOAM PADDING FOAM GUARD 5/8" FOAM PADDING REINFORCEMENT BAND PLASTIC RING PVC TUBE 1/2" PLASTIC SHAFT 3/16" FOAM PADDING 3/16" FOAM PADDING RUBBER SAFETY TIP REINFORCING TAPE 3/16" FOAM PADDING 1/2" PLASTIC SHAFT 1/4" FOAM END staff utting edge technology meets ancient knowledge in TIGER CLAW’s newest and safest light weight competition swords! The Tiger Claw Combat Swords cover a full range of styles of competition weapons to match your entire armory! Combat Swords are made of a strong, yet flexible, lightweight PVC core, and are covered in sturdy black vinyl. All Combat Swords are tipped in RED or BLUE for competition use. The Sword-style comes in four lengths: 18"(S), 24"(M), 36"(L) & 43"(XL). The Staff-style is available in 60" and 72". 3/16" FOAM PADDING 1/4" FLEXIBLE PLASTIC SHAFT for anyone for very long. As in any other martial art, kata should support everything we do in more realistic applications. If there are no formal basics and strategy for combat, winning is achieved by random chance. They swung and missed or the other one was faster. In real swordsmanship our nightly training instills patterned behavior and specific responses to various attacks in sword encounters. Strategy and technique in sword is what the Samurai realized would provide a decisive victory or an embarrassing defeat. Techniques that were specificly designed around the sword’s shape and capabilities worked better than a random erratic approach to what, in former times, was a life and death situation. Of all the padded weaponry for swords in the market place today we finally chose Tiger Claw’s ‘Combat Swords’ for our sparring weapons for several reasons. First, they have the most realistic length to weight and rigid to flexibility ratios of anything else out there. And Tiger Claw’s choice of construction materials has made a durable instrument that holds up under the pressure of ‘full-on’ nightly sparring sessions with predictable and consistent results, exchange after exchange. Also, with three well thought out sizes for kids to adults, there is a size that fits everyone. At IshiYama Ryu we are all about predictable repeatability. Tiger Claw’s ‘Combat Swords’ are our sparring instrument of choice at all IshiYama Ryu and Peak Performance schools of Stone Mountain Sword locations. Russell McCartney is a Guinness Book World Record Holder for target test cutting—sword division. He is the Founder and Chief Instructor of IshiYama Ryu – Shin Koryu and Peak Performance Schools of Stone Mountain Sword. People don’t join a martial arts school simply because of the style that you teach or how many years you have been in business. People join because of the overall professionalism that a school offers. A martial arts school can benefit from incorporating programs into their school. Programs such as goal-based memberships, term-based memberships, black belt club, and master club all can help maintain retention while at the same time spice up your curriculum. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular programs available in the martial arts industry: Goal-based memberships In this type of program the student commits to completing a goal when joining your school. You can break up your goal-based memberships by beginner, intermediate, advanced, and elite. This means that instead of committing to a month-to-month agreement, the student must complete the goal and then upgrade their commitment by setting the next goal. Here’s an example of how you can break down the programs according to a nine color-belt system*: Beginner program- Completing the 1st three belt levels. Suggested price: $99 per month+down payment Intermediate program- Completing the 2nd three belt levels. Suggested price: $109 per month+down payment Advanced program- Completing the last three belt levels before black belt. Suggested price: $119 per month+down payment Elite program- Black belt training from 1st degree and up. Suggested price: $129 per month+down payment *If you have more than nine color belts, then you can divide the programs differently. Term-based memberships In this type of program the student commits to a specified term when joining your school. The longer term a student commits to, the better price they get. This type of program is also better for retention vs. a month-tomonth agreement. Incorporating Programs Into Your Martial Arts School by Melody Shuman Here’s an example of how you can break down your term-based programs: 3-month agreement: $119 per month+down payment 6-month agreement: $109 per month+down payment 1-year agreement: $99 per month+down payment Black Belt Club and Master Club The Black Belt Club (BBC) and Master Club (MC) programs were designed to establish a longer-term commitment and/or provide the students with more training opportunities in specialty classes. There are several ways to set up your BBC and MC programs. Depending on what your goals are for your students will determine which program is best for you. Here are the two most popular ways to set up your BBC and MC programs: 1.As a long term commitment program 2.As add-on programs Each way is effective and can increase your retention, boost your bottom line, and add spice to your classes. Let’s break down both ways to help you decide which way is better for you: Long Term BBC and MC programs The long-term BBC and MC require the students to commit to over 1-year of training, and in some cases schools require up to a 5-year commitment. As a benefit to a long-term commitment, the students is allowed additional training, access to specialty classes, exclusive discounts, and recognition for his or her commitment with a special belt, patch, and/ or uniform. The down payment and monthly tuition is usually higher due to the additional training, which is enticing to many martial arts schools that want to increase their monthly billing statistics. Here’s an example of how a long-term BBC and MC program is set up: The Black Belt Club Program: $299 down and $139 per month. Includes the following benefits: • One additional training class per week • 10% off merchandise and special events • Special belt, patch, and uniform • Access to weekly weapons class The Master Club Program: $499 down and $149 per month. Includes the following benefits: • Unlimited training classes per week • 20% off merchandise and special events • Special belt, patch, and uniform • Access to weekly weapons class • Access to leadership team and demo team Add-on BBC and MC programs The add-on BBC and MC program includes an annual fee as opposed to an increase in the student’s monthly tuition. The benefits include access to weekly specialty classes that are not available in the regular curriculum. This type of BBC and MC program is ideal for school owners that do not want to offer long-term commitments, but still want to offer additional specialty classes. Here’s and example of the weekly specialty classes that you can offer: 1.Weapons class 2.Leadership class 3.Demo team class 4.Competition class Here’s an example of how your can break down add-on BBC and MC programs: BBC: $350 per year. Includes unlimited access to one specialty program for an entire year. MC: $500 per year. Includes unlimited access to two specialty programs for an entire year. MC Elite: $750 per year. Includes unlimited access to all specialty programs for an entire year. Conclusion Incorporating programs into your martial arts school can have many benefits. The first step is to decide which programs are best for you. The second step is to network with a fellow martial arts school that is currently experiencing success with their programs. Once you incorporate additional programs into your school, you will notice a difference in your retention, bottom line, and overall moral of your school. His son, Chad Netherland, further excited the crowd with his new record of having 800 plus pounds of concrete broken on his chest while he was lying on a bed of nails. Both set new world records for both Guinness World Records and the World Record Federation. (check out the amazing pictures at http://www.WorldRecordFederation.c om).
