Cognitive Behavioral
Treatment for Insomnia
March 11 & 12, 2011
Overview
Insomnia is widely recognized to be the most common sleep
problem and is also a leading complaint in primary care settings
The consequences and morbidity associated with chronic insomnia
can be substantial across several domains and can include increased
health care utilization, impaired quality of life, increased risk of
psychiatric disorders (including depression), increased risk of falls
and hip fractures, and worse outcomes for co-morbid disorders.
Effective treatment of insomnia not only improves sleep quality and
daytime functioning, but also may improve comorbid conditions
such as chronic pain and depression. In particular, cognitivebehavioral treatments for insomnia have been shown to be of
equal or greater effectiveness when compared to sedative hypnotic
medication.
This conference, hosted by Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s
Neuroscience Institute and Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program
is designed to provide physicians, nurses, psychologists and other
health care professionals the core elements of cognitive-behavioral
treatment for insomnia. The course presents systematic, emperically
validated treatment methods and essential information about the
pathophysiology and etiology of insomnia necessary to inform
diagnosis and treatment.
Objectives
Upon completion of the conference, participants should be able to:
• Define insomnia according to ICSD-2 and RDC criteria
• Identify and explain the major theories related to etiology and
pathophysiology of insomnia
• Assess and compare the merits and applicability of the major
behavioral and medical treatment methods for insomnia
• Conduct a differential diagnosis in intrinsic sleep disorders
• Conduct CBT-I with peer supervision
