The Tributary Spring 2016 www.fiverivers.org Five Rivers Council As I See It ... No Higher Calling In one of my favorite quotes Forest Witcraft stated, “a hundred years from Gary Decker now … Scout Executive/ it will not CEO Five Rivers matter Council, BSA what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be better because I was important in the life of a boy.” I can think of no higher calling then in making a difference in the life of a child. As Scouters and Scouting families you know firsthand the positive impact that Scouting has. I challenge you to share the message of Scouting with all youth and families in our communities. The more youth we serve in Scouting the more we can change the world! Camp Gorton Facebook Page How You Can Spend Summer Vacation Are you wondering how to fill those idle summer hours with fun and adventure? You will find the answer in summer camp, no matter what experience you choose! According to Mr. Karl Ziegenfus, Staff Advisor for Council Camping Committee, there isn’t a better way to spend your time than in the woods this summer experiencing the adventures of camping. And who couldn’t agree more? There are many options available to you, each offering their own unique programming according to your needs and wishes. Let’s look at your choices. Day Camp Day Camp is a chance for younger scouts to have the opportunity to experience programs in an environment familiar to them. This year is a great one for the Lodge, as we will be hosting the Section NE-3A Conclave. An Order of the Arrow Conclave is truly a sight to behold, we will have five Councils all coming to Sunny Camp Gorton to participate in training classes including Dutch Oven Cooking, Public Speaking, Atlatl, and Tomahawk throwing. We can truly say that we have some of the best training to offer, with some of the best trainers to match. After morning training, there will be games of outdoor fun, and lodge based competition. If you are an Order of the Arrow member, it is something that you shouldn’t miss. To register go to http://www.ne3a.org/ conclave/ If you are not an Order of the Provided Photo To Register www.ne3a.org/conclave/ Arrow Member, you should talk to your Scoutmaster to make sure you have an election this year. If you are a Scoutmas- ter, then you should contact Lodge Advisor Peter Reif at tkaendod@gmail.com to help schedule one for your unit. — Kelsey Seymour Lodge Vice Chief TKäen DōD Lodge www.fiverivers.org Page 4 Five Rivers Council Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner On your mark! The recognition dinner will be held at the Holiday Inn Riverside, 760 East Water Street, Elmira, NY. at 6 p.m. The guest speaker will be Gary Decker, the new Five Rivers Council Scout Executive. Gary began his Scouting career as a District Executive with the Baden Powell Council in Binghamton, NY in 2004. All reservations must be turned in by US Mail or in person by May 9. National Youth Leadership Training NYLT, National Youth Leadership Training, will take place August 7 to 12 this year at Camp Brule. NYLT is the premier leadership training a Scout age 13 to 20 can get. They will learn the BE-KNOW-DO of leadership, make some new friends, and have a blast. The vision of this summer’s NYLT staff is to provide a strong curriculum that teaches participants leadership skills that will enable them to be more insightful of their knowledge and to be more comfortable in leadership positions. The theme of this summer’s NYLT will be Star Wars Murder Mystery; it will be a great time so make sure to sign up! If you have any questions, please contact the NYLT Scoutmaster Bob Case at coltzfan@gmail. com or 607-329-5945. - Elizabeth Benedict Five Rivers Council www.fiverivers.org Page 5 Five Rivers in Photos Five Rivers Facebook page Mike Wasserman/ Millennium Graphics STNY Mike Wasserman/ Millennium Graphics STNY Five Rivers Facebook page Mike Wasserman/ Millennium Graphics STNY From the Five Rivers Mall Show, Feb. 6, and University of Scouting Feb. 27. They run 4 days a week, Monday - Thursday and you will need to bring your own lunch and snack. It will ease your mind to know that all of the Day Camp Leaders are National Camp School trained Program Directors. And, what does Day Camp offer, you might wonder? •BB guns •Bows and arrows •Craft projects •Nature projects •Games These are the 5 core activities you will do, although some Day Camps might offer fishing and swimming, depending on their location. Although attending as a den is not required, it is indeed the ideal way to enjoy your time there, as you’ll have far more friends to be with. Once there, the Cub Scouts are split up according to their rank (Bears, Weblos, etc.) thus you will be with current friends while making new friends in Scouting as well. Cub Scout Resident Camp Cub Scout resident camp runs from July 3-6th and is held at Camp Gorton. Scouts come in on Sunday afternoon and stay until Wednesday evening. There are two campers per tent, thus you are always with a buddy, and will enjoy three meals a day, served in the Dining Hall. What will you do in Resident Camp? You will experience... •BB guns •Bows and Arrows Camp Gorton Facebook Page •Fishing •Swimming •Boating (for older Cub Scouts) •Nature •Handicrafts •Games •Group-wide & Camp-wide activities Cub Scout Resident camp runs over the 4th of July weekend, which gives parents and family the perfect opportunity to be with their Scouts, experience unforgettable adventure, and, because of the holiday weekend, you will miss less time from work! Karl Ziegenfus says, “What better thing to do on vacation than go camping with your son?” Karl and his wife have enjoyed many past resident camping experiences and shared that it was the best way to spend time together as a family and is a memory they will always treasure. Karl also said they promise to have special programming for Scouts and their families over the 4th of July weekend so they won’t miss celebrating the holiday. (Hm…I wonder what they have planned? Keep in mind their theme this year is Space and Adventure so I’m betting it will be “out of this world!”) Karl shared they wanted to go in the Star Wars direction but didn’t have approval from Disney just yet to say “Star Wars”. Boy Scout Resident Camp For this you have two options, Camp Brulé and Camp Gorton, where activities are similar to Cub Resident camp, but for older Scouts, and they are Merit Badge oriented. How are they similar and how are they different? Let’s look! Camp Brulé and Camp Gorton both offer: • Shotgun and 22 rifle shooting • Archery • Nature and conservation programs • First year camper experience where a first year Boy Scout can learn their skills • Handicraft programs • Waterfront activities (fishing, swimming, kayaking, Five Rivers Council www.fiverivers.org Page 7 For more information Go to http://www.fiverivers.org or contact Karl Ziegenfus at karl.ziegenfus@scouting.org or Karen Stark, Camping Secretary, at the Arnot Mall Scout Shop. airfield museum while working towards an Aviation Merit Badge. • Venturing week - any Venturing Scouts can participate in activities based on their interest as well.
