This event will also highlight Civil War era children’s games, two battle re-enactments, a dance with a grand march with the Western Home String Band, and Civil War camps – where the re-enactors actually live just like their predecessors did. “Can you imagine waiting six hours for your chicken and hardtack dinner to be ready?” asked Al Lyon, event coorganizer and re-enactor. “The re-enactors will be happy to answer any questions you may have about their uniforms, weapons, camp equipment and more.” Two more highlighted performers include Bob Welch, a singer/songwriter who performs Civil War Era music and is also a legendary storyteller. Not to be outdone is Lance Mack, an Abraham Lincoln impersonator who will be presenting some of Lincoln’s most famous speeches as well as a great photo opportunity with the kids. Grant will live again - at least in the eyes of an audience at the Main Feature Theatre in Waukon on June 7th. Pete Grady of Marshalltown will reprise his performance of the famed Civil War general and president at the event Friday evening as a part of the Thunder in the Park Civil War Re-enactment event. Grady, a native son of Allamakee County and a 1971 graduate of Waukon High School, will portray Grant in a one-man show, “Unconditional Surrender: An Evening with President Grant”, at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public and generously sponsored by Dave Martin, Martin Funeral Home of Waukon. Admission is $5 per person and all proceeds benefit the Thunder in the Park Civil War Re-enactment, Allamakee County Historical Society and Main Feature Theatre. Food and beverages will be available for sale. Grady not only performs the one-man production, but he also wrote, directed and produced the play based on Grant’s memoirs. It took Grady approximately three months to research and another two months to write and format the play. “I have always been interested in the Civil War, and a friend SWEENEY AUCTION SERVICE Sycamore Floral Waukon, IA • 563-568-2464 www.sweeneyauctionservice.com 116 Rossville Rd., Waukon, IA 563-568-3676 www.sycamorefloral.com told me that I resemble General Grant.” Grady explained. “Once I was told of the resemblance, I began to look for a play where I could combine my interest in the Civil War with my interest in theatre. I couldn’t find such a play, so I realized that I would never be able to play the General unless I wrote a play myself.” Grady created the play as a fundraiser for the Marshalltown Community Theatre and has performed it eight times, including two performances at the State Historical Society in Des Moines and performances at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. 219 Hwy. 9 South, Waukon, IA Phone 563-568-3459 Welcome to Waukon! MONUMENT Following Grady’s performance, participants are invited to proceed to the Allamakee County Courthouse for a rededication ceremony for the county’s Civil War Monument. Those attending are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to sit on during the ceremony. The original purchase of the monument was described in an article from the Postville Herald, dated January 2, 1920: “County Buys Soldiers Monument The Soldiers Monument Commission of Allamakee County, appointed some years ago, and consisting of W.B. Cowan, Robt. Wampler and Judge H.E. Taylor, met with the Board of Supervisors yesterday afternoon and decided upon a monument for the Civil War veterans of this county. A contract was entered into by the Board with E. J. Roggensack of Lansing for its erection in the city park at Waukon. The monument will be of white Barre granite and its cost is $8,000. The base is 8 feet and four inches square and 16 inches thick, with a die 3 feet and six inches square upon which is mounted a soldier in the pose of “rest.” The height of the monument will be twenty feet and the total weight 70,000 pounds. G.A.R. and other emblems will adorn it, including the artillery on one side, the infantry on another and a large eagle. The inscription for the face of the monument has not been decided upon. If possible, its erection is to be completed in time to be dedicated next Decoration Day.” According to event co-organizer Al Lyon, additional research is being done on the monument’s history. CEREMONY The rededication ceremony, which is expected to last about 30 minutes, will include a short introduction, invocation, reading of a list of names of those who died during the Civil War, a reading of a letter by “President Lincoln,” a short speech about where the men from Allamakee County fought, laying of the wreath, a rifle firing by the American Legion and Taps. The Courthouse lawn will be ablaze with 192 luminaries representing Allamakee County soldiers. Twelve orange luminaries will represent the men who died in Andersonville Prison. The orange represents the red Georgia soil where the soldiers are buried. PAGE 5 Meet President Abraham Lincoln as portrayed by Lance Mack Through his nearly mirrorlike portrayal, Lance Mack will seemingly bring President Abraham Lincoln back to life for those attending the “Thunder in the Park” Civil War re-enactment event being held at Waukon City Park June 8-9. Mack will present a series of “Speech Giving by President Lincoln” sessions throughout the “Thunder in the Park” weekend. Check the Schedule of Events printed within this special publication for additional information about those sessions. Adorned in President Lincoln’s signature stovepipe hat and black frock coat, Mack’s stunning physical likeness to the 16th President of the United States only serves to add to his presentation. His tall, lanky body and natural black beard are just part of his overall Lincoln near carbon- copy appearance that initially drew the attention of Mack’s family and friends and soon became the basis for him to pursue his portrayal of the former president. Mack’s core presentation in his Lincoln portrayal often includes the following: • An official presidential introduction and entrance to “Hail to the Chief” • A recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance along with the audience • A speech about “Liberty and Law” • An autobiographical sketch of Abraham Lincoln’s life • A recitation of The Gettysburg Address • A question and answer session. Bob combines storytelling and history with the music. The songs of the 1800’s literally bring history to musical life. Bob and his original song, “The Ballad of Jennie Wade” were honored in the “Song of the Year” songwriting competition and featured in the national magazine, “The Gettysburg Companion.” Bob will be performing Saturday and Sunday during the Thunder in the Park Event.
