While no good eeholar will mlapell com mon BMiu* or watA.\ wtoera tbe Usage is Sued, be may err In spelling proper oauee. Iu spelling tbe name of our township there is very little uuifonnity. By some it is spelled with *» *W," Blumtteod; by others without the “U,‘ Ftttinit'd. The latter is the com et spelling, tu support of whioh we remark. 1. It is the tnjnl name, or spelling, to follow •kick (using »u Hibeniieism) would he rC/d, even if wrong. By refer ence to the laws of IMS, page CO, the “not to set off, Ac., the township of Plumsted," will be found. 2. Though it is » question whether the original proprietor of most of the torriL ry comprising the township, Clement Plumsted, and for whom it was named, spelled his name without, or with the ‘W it is undoubted that hie sc :t 1 horns*, who became Sheriff of Monmouth Co., spelled his nnmo without the “a ’—"Thus, i’linuhtrd," tvs we havj seeu it written.— Iu Smith’s History of New Jersey, pu b lished iu 1765, page 156, C. Flu inntod’s name ii given without tho "a ," as one ol K‘tht hceJve proprietors" of East Jersey, un der jnm hiwc from tb e window and execu tors of Sir George Carteret, in 1862. In other {wits o f the work, viz; pages 21516-18 aud 443-6G, the name has tho “a,” in another work we hare seeu it omitted. 3. We have analogy for it iu such names as Halsted, Olmsted, W onted, Winsted, Jce, though we acknowledge that in the m utter o f analogy the author ities arc about equally divided. Even in Bucks Co., Penn., they hare a “ i’lmi!stead" township and a “Flum steadvilla.’’ We hold to our own spelling however, iu asrnuch as tlie first two points named are decisive. Ptum tftd w ithout th e " a " must be tho spelling in New Jersey, until the law ia uttered. ( lu m g i i i n O n k f u ii l . A house of considerable size formerly stood on the E ast side of Mr. U tilise s saw null bank, uud another to the South or it. These have disappeared. A v. ry good, modern built house, occupies the place of the latter. The buildings on this s tric t have nearly all been much im proved, and before crossing the bridge we give v parting salute to the old slaugh ter house with its offensive effiuvio, al most in the street. Thanks to Mr. Comp it is no more seen, the nuisance has been abated and Inm an’s refectory bus taken its place. W ithin twenty years the grist and saw mill property o f John L. Holme has been very thoroughly repaired, nlmro-t renewed, ;o th at their capacity lor busi ness is nearly equal to any in tho country. The foiroer was b u rn t December 7t!t, 1733, and was th en owned by Jonathan Cowperthwaito, t.m grandfather ol Judge Jano s Gowportlnvoite, by whom it was r, built. Before Mr. Cowperthwaito came n possession it. as well ..s tho place, was called "Ki.ninins' Mills." A bout the end icf the last century it began to be called “Egypt," for the reason th at tho place had become a n o ted m arket for grain and was generally resorted to by tho inhabi tants of the southern p a rts of Monmouth and B urlington counties lor their supplies. Barzillai H opkins succeeded J. Cowperthwaite a few years after the mill was re built. and conducted the m illing and mercantile business till alter the close of the second war with Great Britain. Ho was succeeded by Joseph W. Reckless, who continued in business a few years and then sold out to Daniel Cornwell, iu whoso bauds tbe property a m 1 business became depreciated, b u t was revived somew hat by his successor, Joseph M. Morgan, who took possession about th ir ty-eight years ago. Owing to untoward circumstances there was another decline before Mr. Morgan discontinued business. F o r some two or three years, however under tho excellent m anagem ent o f Jijs son, John H. Morgan, m atters assumed a better aspect and the old m ill property was prosperous and profitable. It was then disposed o f to the p resen t proprie tor, Mr. Hulm e, who took possession about thirteen years ago. It lias since then do Re an extensive business;, which has been conducted with energy, tact and discretion a u d contributed very largely in advancing the prosperity of the town. W hO ttL NOTICES.
