YIO CHU KANG SECONDARY SCHOOL YCKSS/2016/T1/014 8 January 2016 Dear Parents/Guardian On behalf of our staff, we would like to wish you and your family a healthy and happy 2016! As we begin the school year, let us be reminded of what guides us at YCKSS: Vision: A community of learners, leaders, innovators Motto: Pursuit of knowledge, service to all Mission: Growing today for where the world is going tomorrow Values: Teamwork, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity and Pride In line with our school vision, we have a three-year theme: 2014 As a community, we build. 2015 As a community, we celebrate. 2016 As a community, we leave a legacy. For our school context, we will define legacy as something good that we want to hand down to future generations. With this theme of leaving a legacy as a community, we as a community should be responsible stewards of what is entrusted to us and play an active role in building the YCKSS Community so that the generations that come after us will be able to celebrate the fruits of our labour and live a better life. The focus for each term is as follows: Term Focus 1 Honouring Legacies 2 Receiving Legacies 3 Building Legacies 4 Leaving Legacies We invite you to join us on this journey. Have conversations with your child/ward on this theme and get them to think of the legacy that they would want to leave. Strategic Thrusts In our school, we have three strategic thrusts to guide us to realise our school vision. Strategic Thrust 1: Holistic Education Instilling wholesome habits in our students is important. Our students’ well-being is important and in view of nurturing and sustaining good eating habits, we have embarked on the Healthy Meals in School Programme (HMSP). This programme is a collaboration between Health Promotion Board (HPB) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). Through this progamme, canteen vendors are expected to follow food service guidelines, cut down fat, sugar and salt and serve healthy set meals comprising whole-grains, fruit and vegetables in the meals. These healthy set meals incorporate food from the four main food groups – brown rice and wholemeal bread, meat and others, vegetables and fruit – thereby helping students receive the right nutrients necessary for their growth. We encourage you to also have healthy meals at home so that we can ensure the well-being of our students. We want to instill sustainable studying habits in our students. After school, it is important that they spend time to complete their homework. Ensure that they write a sentence a day, a paragraph a day or a page a day in their journal. For a start, they may write in English. As they progress, they may extend to writing in the Mother Tongue. In this way, they will improve their language skills and sharpen their thinking skills. It is an opportunity for you to find out about their lives and what they think – a great leverage point to build a relationship with them. To improve their skills in Mathematics, work towards doing five sums a day. Practice will allow for them to reinforce what they have learnt in class and over time, they will be able to understand Mathematical concepts better and master the necessary skill to excel in Mathematics. There are also other aspects in life that we may want to consider cultivating habits in our children. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Book by Sean Covey is a good read if you are keen. 2 Address: 3063 Ang Mo Kio Ave 5, Singapore 569868 Tel: 6456 0669 Fax: 6552 2927 Email: yckss@moe.edu.sg Website: http://www.yiochukangsec.moe.edu.sg/ YIO CHU KANG SECONDARY SCHOOL Co-curricular Activities (CCA) is an integral part of learning in secondary school.
