A strange twist of fate, to be sure. At the beginning of the season, the rookie center out of Niagara University was penciled in as one of eight players assigned to the Condors from the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate, the Iowa Chops. And it didn’t take long for fans to notice Matt. In fact, he was one of two rookie ‘Matts’ in the Bakersfield lineup that quickly made a name for themselves, as both he and Matt Pope were off to a fast start lighting it up in their pro careers. They are both in the AHL for now, and Pope missed his giveaway night last weekend, as well, with Youth Replica Jersey Night. Before turning pro, Caruana was a steady player at Niagara, putting up double digits in goals in three of his four seasons. He finished in the Top 5 in points in his conference as a sophomore, junior and senior. Signed by the Ducks to an American Hockey League contract last season, after finishing up his college career, Caruana suited up in five regular season games with their AHL affiliate, then the Portland Pirates. There he played for Head Coach Kevin Dineen, who sniped over 300 goals and racked up over 2,200 penalty minutes in his NHL career before getting behind the behind the bench. Caruana also saw action in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games, as well. He was sent to Bakersfield last October to start his first full professional campaign, but the last game he played for the Condors was back on November 29th against the Idaho Steelheads. By that point, he had 10 goals and 14 points in 18 ECHL games, ranked among rookie leaders in the league in scoring, and tied for fourth among all ECHL rookies in goals. He had three multi-goal games in his Condors career, and scored at least one goal in four of his first five games of the season. On December 1st, he was called up by Iowa and we haven’t seen him since. He has played 39 games with the Chops, putting up 5g-6a-11pts in the AHL. “It’s a little weird looking at yourself on a bobblehead,” said Matt, on the phone from Iowa. “It’s funny. I’m seeing the picture all over the website and looking at in press releases and it’s kind of strange. The hair looks a little reddish, but overall I think they did a good job.” Matt did a good job, too, while he was here. “I’ve said it before, that I had a great time when I was there in Bakersfield. I wish I could be there for my bobblehead night, but at the same time things have gone pretty good for me this season, and we have a battle up here for the playoffs, too.
