FAIR GIVES GLIMPSE INTO MINDS OF 1995 STUDENTS
Space shuttling, fish and stress, fetuses and smoking, stereo v. mono vision
and what happens when you lie are but a few of the wide range of subjects
among the 1,000 displays planned for next week's science fair, which features
the knowledge and imagination of students expected on college campuses between
1989 and 1995. The School of Science is hosting the annual regional science
fair managed by Science Service, Inc., N.Y. "No nerd show this," says Gregor
M. Novak, associate professor of physics at the school and director of the
fair.
Neither is it only for eggheads. "The exhibits will show that science isn't the only
subject the students care about," Novak says. There is no charge to see the exhibits and
get explanations from the young thinkers. The fair is Mar. 11-13 in the large gym at the
PE/natatorium building. Wednesday is for students in grades four-six. Thursday is for
the junior high bunch, and Friday is for the high schoolers. Each day students will set
up from noon-2 p.m. Judging is from 2-5 p.m., public viewing is from 5-7 p.m. and awards
for winning entries begin at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome; there is no charge. -SAR

Greetings: Know ye all by these presents that OFFICER DONALD PACKWOOD is hereby
awarded this certificate of Commendation," the proclamation reads. It is from the
Indianapolis Police Dept. and the citizens of Indianapolis and is signed by the
mayor. It was given last month in a special ceremony to the IUPUI police officer who
used his heart, his head and his training in a gallant attempt to save the life of an
IPD motorcycle policeman who was mortally injured in a wreck last June that Packwood
witnessed while off-duty. Patrolman Packwood gave Officer David Sandler CPR, called
for help and had him stable at the scene. Massive internal injuries later caused his
death.

-4MEDICOS REVIVE SLUMBERING SOCIETY
The John Shaw Billings History of Medicine Society has been revived after a 20-year
hiatus. The once flourishing society at the School of Medicine is formally incorporated
and is complete with a constitution and "mercifully short" by-laws that can be reviewed
by any interested person. Serving on the board of directors are Sidney Ochs, president;
Jan Muller, secretary-treasurer; Charles Bonsett and Robert Worth. Membership is open to
anyone (students included)--in medicine, married to medicine or outside medicine. There
will be four meetings each year with a pay-as-you-go connnunal meal and a presentation by
"local talent" or invited speakers. The next meeting is Mar. 11, 5:30 p.m., Provincial
Room, Union Building. President Ochs will present "Weir Mitchell (1829-1914): Pioneer
American Neurologist and Physiologist." Call 4-8577 or 4-7940.
EMPTY POCKETS COULD BEAT BURNS' DEBATERS You already know that IUPUI can now boast
of having the state's number one college debate team. Because of that the team gets to
compete at the national level in invitational competition at Louisiana State. Despite
efforts to find every available penny, the team is so good it ran out of money before it
ran out of winning arguments. To help fill the van's gas tank and defray lodging costs,
you can send a check payable to University Forum to Helen Cutter Davis, Student
Activities Office, LY B002F. An account will be established in the Office of the Bursar.

Watch CARE- fully as your associates begin dropping off pounds of
\_______ useless fat as they meet their goals for a slim silhouette by May.
The Slim-A-Thon is on! Already, the "Seis Mujares Gordas y Ninguno
Hombres Gordos" are recording every bite, every lost pound, they are
sharing low-calorie menus, weighing once a week together and will staple together the
lips of anyone who cheats. Other teams have unique Slim-A-Thon ideas. Watch here for
more dumb, stupid, witty team names and Bod-Squad rules. Non-Slim-A-Thoners and Bod
Squads can get healthy and thin in the free classes that include private dietary
consultations, fitness programs and more. Classes begin in several campus locations on
Mar. 12. For a full schedule, call 4- 4537.

JEGKN'S (TINY) TAX TIP: ACCEPT IRS INVITATION With the new tax law comes more
stringent enforcement of old laws and new. For instance, the IRS intends to increase the
number of letters in which it asks that the taxpayers attend the scheduled audit meeting
(interview meeting). The IRS has always wanted taxpayers to meet with the auditor at
this meeting, but lawyers and accountants have reglarly advised clients not to do so.
(Lawrence A. Jegen, III is the Thomas F. Sheehan Professor of Tax Law and Policy and
provides Tax Tips as a service to the campus conununity.)
