monthly meeting of the Seattle
Astronomical Society will be
Tom Quinn, associate professor in
the Department of Astronomy at
the University of Washington in
Seattle.
The topic of his lecture will be
Rapid Gas Giant Formation, describing his team¹s work on computer simulations of planetary formation which gave the startling
result that gas giant formation may
be possible within hundreds instead of millions -of years.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=Tom is part of the HPCC/ESS Project, where he works on running
and analyzing N-body simulations
of structure formation in the Universe. His other research interests
include Galactic and Solar System
dynamics, and planet formation. He is
a member of the UW Astrobiology program. He is also involved in developing
scientific software for the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey and chairs the Solar System
working group.
He teaches the graduate Stellar Dynamics course and a course on Numerical Methods for Astrophysics. He was
also a lecturer for the Computing Our
Universe REU summer school at University of Massachusetts and the NATO
Advanced Study Institute in Scotland.

The ALCOR duties I just described may seem mundane, but there is ample
opportunity to be involved at the regional and national level. I just learned
recently that the SAS is also a member of NWRAL, the North West Region of the Astronomical League. NWRAL consists of astronomy clubs
and affiliated organizations, such as the Table Mountain and Oregon Star
Parties, in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. According to Loren Busch, the
NWRAL has been largely inactive during the past few years and is currently in the process of revitalizing itself. 7KH 1:5$/ KDV LWV RZQ VHW

Thursday UW Quolloquia Lunch Series
The Astronomy Department has a weekly colloquium that meets
Thursdays at 4:00 pm in PAB A102 (the classroom part of the
Physics/Astronomy Building complex). Many of these people
will also speak at astro lunch*. Here is the schedule of speakers
for the coming quarter:
January 30—Doug Johnstone: Dominion Astrophysical Observatory speaks on: "SCUBA-Diving in Nearby Molecular
Clouds: New Constraints on the Physical Processes Responsible
for Star Formation"
Feb. 6—Jennifer Johnson: Dominion Astrophysical Observatory speaks on: "The Oldest Star Clusters in the Magellanic
Clouds"
[Feb. 13—No Colloquuium/Dept. Mtg.]
Feb. 20 Mike Gladders: Carnegie Observatory speaking on:
"The Red-Sequence Cluster Survey"
Feb. 27- Puragra Guhathakurta: Lick Observatory speaks on:
"M31's Stellar Halo and Dwarf Galaxy Building Blocks"
March 6– David Catling: University of Washington
Atmospheric Sciences on: "The Evolution of the Environment
on Mars"
March 13—Zeljko Ivezic: Princeton University on:
"Variable Sky: with SDSS towards LSST"
* For Astro Lunch Schedule, please go to:
http://www.astro.washington.edu/willman/astrolunch/
astrolunch_2003.html. These are held weekly on Tuesdays at
12:30. However, of note is the next Brown Bag Lunch which
will be Jan-Erik Solheim from the Univ. or Tromso, Norway,
presenting: “AM CVn Systems.”
