The topic of his lecture will be Rapid Gas Giant Formation, describing his team¹s work on computer simulations of planetary formation which gave the startling result that gas giant formation may be possible within hundreds instead of millions -of years. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=Tom is part of the HPCC/ESS Project, where he works on running and analyzing N-body simulations of structure formation in the Universe. His other research interests include Galactic and Solar System dynamics, and planet formation. He is a member of the UW Astrobiology program. He is also involved in developing scientific software for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and chairs the Solar System working group. He teaches the graduate Stellar Dynamics course and a course on Numerical Methods for Astrophysics. He was also a lecturer for the Computing Our Universe REU summer school at University of Massachusetts and the NATO Advanced Study Institute in Scotland. 6HDWWOH$VWURQRPLFDO6RFLHW\ Address: PO Box 31746 Seattle, WA 98103-1746 SAS Information Line: 206-523-ASTR http://seattleastro.org WebfootWeb: webftweb@scn.org E-mail: info@seattleastro.org Web Page: Board & Committees President: Stephen Van Rompaey, 425-564-8619, se_vanrompaey@hotmail.com Chairman of the Board: Mary Ingersoll, 206-246-0977, missioncontrol13@juno.com First VP–Programs: Brian Allen, 206-517-5599, bri@brizone.com Second VP–Education: Mike Langley, 425-481-0863, mlangley123@aol.com Third VP–Membership: Roger Steyaert, 425-432-2714, K7RXV@email.msn.com Fourth VP–Publicity: Mark deRegt, deregt@earthlink.net Treasurer: Jim Peterson, 206-5246015, jimpe@jjpintl.com Secretary: Thomas Vaughan, 206772-4454, tomva@wavepacket.net Astronomical League: Open Webmaster: Paul Rodman, 425-889-8273, saswebmaster@ilanga.com Club Telescopes: Brian Allen, 206-517-5599, bri@brizone.com Special Interest Groups Dark Sky Northwest: Bruce Weertman, bruce@weertman.com Telescope Makers: Peter Hirtle, 206-363-0897, notpete@scn.org Astrophotography: Keith Allred, 425-821-5820, keithallred@dwt.com Vive La Lune (Moon): Pat Lewis, 206-524-2006, joagreen@aol.com Sidewalk Astronomers: Paul Ham, 206-522-7410, paulham@webtv.net Webfooted Astronomer Editor: Christine Oneto, 206-282-0952, editor@seattleastro.org Circulation Managers: Pat Lewis and Joanne Green, 206-524-2006, joagreen@aol.com Club Library: Karl Schroeder, 206-362-7605, kschroe225@aol.com )HEUXDU\ 6HDWWOH $VWURQRPLFDO 6RFLHW\ From the President’s Desk. . . I just learned recently that the SAS is also a member of NWRAL, the North West Region of the Astronomical League. NWRAL consists of astronomy clubs and affiliated organizations, such as the Table Mountain and Oregon Star Parties, in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. According to Loren Busch, the NWRAL has been largely inactive during the past few years and is currently in the process of revitalizing itself. 7KH 1:5$/ KDV LWV RZQ VHW RI RIILFHUV LQFOXGLQJ D
