opefully, the worst of the automotive industry crisis
is now behind us. Peugeot South Africa has emerged
from the challenge stronger than ever. Our position
as one of the strongest brands among South African vehicle
importers has been confirmed. When Peugeot says ‘it’s back’
it means for good.
Our sales volumes show continued improvement. At the
same time, we have extended our range. We have opened
new dealerships and strengthened our relationship with our
owners.
As South Africans confronted the after-effects of recession,
we addressed the affordability challenge by developing
innovative finance packages. As owners returned to the
dealership floor looking to trade in their current models, they
found that our residual values had stood up remarkably well.
We provided further support by improving our warranties and
maintenance plans across nearly all of our range.
We reinforced our position in the commercial vehicle market
through improved model availability, by providing more
demonstration models and by emphasising the Boxer’s
versatility, especially its suitability for taxi conversion.
In good times and bad, you are measured by your ability
to support your brand, your owners and your dealers.
Peugeot knows this better than most – this is, after all, our
bi-centennial! We have been in business 200 years. We are
celebrating by doing what Peugeot does best – applying our
philosophy of constant innovation and showing that after
200 years our products are more advanced, more exciting
and more relevant than ever.
You will read in this issue about our advanced HDi
technology – nothing could be more topical as carbon taxes
are introduced to our market. Our design credentials are just
as impressive as our technology, as demonstrated by our
new RCZ sports coupé. Further confirmation comes in the
eye-catching form of another two derivatives to our local
offering – our high performance 308 CC and 207 CC.
Excitement and constant evolution are also evident in our
new 3008 and the 308 GTi. And there’s more to come… two
new vehicles are on the way in the next 12 months
– not derivatives, but all-new offerings.
Peugeot has a great, 200-year history. But for real
excitement we look to the future, especially here in
South Africa.

OK, the secret’s out. The RCZ is here…
sleek, chic and with a provocative French
look that says ‘come and get me’. This is
the concept car the Peugeot designers
were so eager to bring out they forgot
to put a number on it.
H
owever, if it’s numbers you’re after, try the spec sheet. There you’ll encounter hints of the pleasure to come.
Vital statistics like 147kW at 5 500 on the manual version
and 115kW at 6 000 on the auto version. That’s maximum power
in kilowatts! For top-end torque in Newton metres you’ve got to like the sound of 275 at 1 700 for the manual and 240 at 1 400
for the auto.
Best of the best
Even before its commercial launch, the RCZ was voted the Most Beautiful
Car of the Year (2009) at the 25th International Automobile Festival.
The coupé then pulled off another coup by winning the Red Dot
‘Best Of The Best’ design award. This international accolade is bestowed
by a 30-member jury drawn from the world’s pickiest designers.
Check out the lithe lines and you’ll see why the designers were so
impressed. RCZ spells sheer class. This is self-indulgence on wheels.
The beauty was first revealed in late 2007 as a concept car at the Frankfurt
Motor Show. Unsurprisingly, the concept was a hit every time it went on
show and a few months later Peugeot committed to series production.
By that stage the orders were already piling up.
The RCZ arrived on European showroom floors in the northern
hemisphere spring of 2010 and the first models were in South Africa in
time for spring down here.
Technically, this is a 2+2 sports coupé. This means there’s plenty of room
up front for you and your significant other and you can get a couple of kids
in the back. Though anyone who confuses the RCZ with a family car needs
their head read.

Double-bubble roof
Your average coupé looks like it’s designed for a wannabe Tom
Cruise – a shortish oke who likes to look flash and doesn’t require
much legroom. Taller South Africans will be relieved to learn the
RCZ coupé offers so much more, courtesy of its distinctive doublebubble roof and some extra headroom.
Peugeot designers call the back-seats ‘occasional seats’, which is a
nice way of saying you usually travel with them folded down. Tuck
the seats away and you substantially increase the standard boot
capacity of 384 litres.
Another feature at the back that’s worth looking out for is the
double-curved glass rear window – further confirmation that this
model has curves in all the right places.
The aluminium-alloy roof arches add to the aesthetics, but they’re
strong and supportive as well. Peugeot’s use of lighter aluminium
materials has the net effect of optimising the weight/power ratio of
this sports coupé, which works well if thrust is a must.
Glide behind the height- and depth-adjustable steering wheel and
you slip into something comfortable… classy leather seats faced by
a leather-covered dash and sporty instrumentation. An aluminium
threshold and pedals set off the plush interior and down on your
left you’ll find a leather sport-shortened gear shift.
Engine purr
You are pampered by bi-zone automatic climate control and
upmarket doodads like the refrigerated glovebox. There’s
fingertip control on your radio-CD, but leave your Black Eyed
Peas selection at home for the first couple of trips. Listen to
that engine purr instead.

Closer together
The coupé benefits from a revised McPherson-type front suspension
and rear torsion beam. The newcomer’s roadholding qualities suggest an
intimate relationship between car and tar-macadam.You feel so much
closer together.
That’s because the ride height has been lowered by 20mm while the
centre of gravity drops by 40mm. At the same time, the front track has
been widened by 54mm and the rear track by 72mm. The result is a wider,
tighter ‘hug’ of the road.
Hydraulic power steering eases you along the curves while all-around
discs let you ease off at the merest touch of the brake-pedal.
This looks and feels like a thoroughbred, but on the quiet the RCZ is a
techno-nut with an obsessive interest in your personal safety. Hill-assist
is standard, as is traction control with ESP. Front and rear parking sensors
are standard, too.
See and be seen
Central locking is automatically activated when driving. Hazard
lights switch themselves on when you hit the brakes hard. If the tyre
pressure is down, the automatic sensor will tell you long before you
feel it.
When you buy something as upmarket as this you want to see and be
seen. For the ‘seeing’ part of the proposition the directional bi-Xenon
headlights clear things up nicely.
When it comes to the power pack, you can choose between the
1.6-litre THP 115kw six-speed automatic and the 1.6 litre THP 147kW
manual with six-speed manual box.
CO² emissions on the automatic come out at 168g/km. The manual
versions bring this down to 159g/km. Fuel economy – a mundane
consideration for most prospective purchasers – works out across a
mix of motoring conditions at 7.3 litres per 100km (automatic) or
6.9 litres per 100km (manual).
Runs on adrenaline
The RCZ comes with a five-year (or 100 000km) maintenance plan
and a three-year (or 100 000km) warranty. But if you’re totting up the
numbers, you’re missing the point. This is a car that runs on adrenaline
– yours. This is a bold new design. All it asks is that you be bold enough
to embrace it and make it yours.
Sure, the RCZ has got the features and technology, but its effect has
more to do with seduction than calculation. This car’s for the 30- or
40-something go-getter that’s arrived and is not afraid to show it.

The 308
takes GTi
to a new

B
y the looks of things, Peugeot has just expanded the
car world’s definition of ‘hatchback’. If the 308 GTi is
a hatch – and it is – then it must be an escape hatch.
Because this sporting little number has to be the getaway car
of choice for anyone planning to escape the ordinary.
Pace and performance turn you on immediately, but the safety features are
equally impressive. Read the specs and check the handling and the message
sinks in. Power is balanced by responsibility.
The latest Peugeot thoroughbred is the most powerful 308 ever built. This
hi-tech engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger, a rapid response system
that permits the turbo boost to kick in at 1 000rpm. Maximum torque of
275Nm is available from just 1 700 rpm.You get to grips with this sporty
level of performance via a six-speed manual transmission that assures
effortless driveability.
But before accelerating into the middle distance, dwell a minute on the
safety features. The 308 GTi brings you the A-to-Z of active safety, quite
literally…
Safe my mate
ESP (an electronic stability programme) is standard and incorporates
intelligent traction control for improved handling in adverse road and
weather conditions. On top of that you have ABS with EBD (that’s an antilock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution) plus ASR with
DSC (anti-skid regulation with dynamic stability control) and, of course,
EBA (emergency brake assist).
Other safety features include a collapsible steering column and side impact
protection bars. High levels of braking performance are standard, courtesy
of 340mm diameter brake discs up front and 290mm at the rear. Airbag
protection could hardly be more comprehensive – what with driver and
passenger front airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags.
Not surprisingly, the 308 GTi scored five stars in its EuroNCAP 2009 test,
confirming that this is a class act in safety as well as performance terms.

Innovative technology
Abundant interior space
Turbo charged variable valve timing and direct injection result in low petrol
consumption and remarkably modest CO2 emissions for such a highperformance vehicle. Combined cycle fuel consumption is just 6,9 litres per
100km while carbon emissions are only 159g/km – a level compliant with
Euro 5 standards.
Ample head height and an abundance of space for driver and passengers
result in exceptional interior brightness. A glazed surface area of 4.82m²
provides panoramic visibility.
Sporty performance and rather dashing finishes make it tough to believe, but
the GTi is based solidly on the 308 hatch platform. One clue to this heritage is
the semi-high architecture.
But once you’ve settled into your seat, the GTi’s sports credentials stare you
in the face. The leather sport steering wheel with aluminium flattened lower
edge and thumb rests is a reminder of the engine power at your disposal.
The aluminium foot rest and gear knob reinforce the sporting ambience.
The ‘sport’ lower front panel (borrowed from the 308 CC) adds a touch
of class, but the overall effect is to re-emphasise the performance-charged
aesthetics.
The distinction with the mainstream 308 hatch becomes even more
pronounced when you check out the GTi’s round, in-your-face fog-lights
enclosed in chrome, the tailgate spoiler for improved driving efficiency at
speed and double-chromed exhaust.
The 308 platform clearly makes a great base – it’s allowed the Peugeot
designers to reach up and take the GTi to a new level… a new high.
Driving pleasure
The ride’s not only safe, it’s enjoyable too – very enjoyable.
The McPherson-type front suspension and rear torsion beam suspension
deliver smooth and efficient roadholding. Driving pleasure is accentuated by
electro-hydraulic power steering that is attuned to vehicle speed and speed
of steering wheel rotation.
On the 308 GTi the ride height dips by 10mm, bringing the overall height
down 1 488cm. The 18 inch Lincabur alloy wheels are standard.
So far, this all sounds very persuasive, though lion lovers who fell for the
207 GTi may have an understandable attachment to that definitive hot hatch.
Even so, they just might like to check out its big brother. Be assured, if you’re
upwardly progressive, you’ll find the 308 GTi represents upward mobility
and more...
In the 308 version, power and performance have been combined with
sophistication and a sense of subtle superiority. You not only sense the
upgrade; you hear it. That’s right. Apparently, Peugeot massaged the car’s
acoustics so when you hit the accelerator the engine tells you straight out…
‘Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about’.
Engine harmonics are regulated by a vibrating membrane that customises
sound quality to different levels of acceleration. A more controlled hum is
produced during long-distance cruising. You’ve got to hear it to believe it,
but, man, it’s impressive.

“You’re kidding, right?”
That’s got to be anyone’s first reaction to news that Peugeot celebrates its 200th anniversary this
year. Peugeot means modern, contemporary, cool, sleek and chic… yet the brand has been around
since the days when horsepower meant simply that.
The company that developed into the Peugeot automaker was founded in the early 19th century
by brothers Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frederic Peugeot and their brother-in-law. They turned the family
mill near Vandancourt in France into a steel foundry and began rolling out steel. The founders soon
started diversifying… into products like band saws, tools, springs and, believe it or not, corset stays!

By 1840, Peugeot Freres et Compagnie was producing coffee grinders and pepper mills. But for
lion fans, the significant item was saw blades. Even then, Peugeot was at the cutting edge, and in
1850 the first depiction of our much-loved lion appeared on a Peugeot saw. The trademark was
registered in 1858.
The great recovery
Two, three and four wheels
Things really go up a gear in 1885 when Arnaud Peugeot, a genuine visionary,
launched a range of chain-driven bicycles. OK, so it’s not quite the 207 CC
with 115kW under the hood, but these bikes were a big advance on the
penny-farthing.
Peugeot became such a force at the two-wheel end of the market that
bicycles emerged as a major product line, soon followed by motorbikes,
mopeds and scooters. Peugeot remains a leader in the field and earlier this
year became the first brand to bring electric scooters to market.
But let’s get back to Arnaud Peugeot… He spotted the automobile’s potential
from the outset and in 1889 put Peugeot pretty much where it’s been ever
since – at the forefront of car design and production.
It’s a bit of a blow to find Peugeot first came out with a steam-driven
three-wheeler, but steam was abandoned in 1890 and Peugeot embraced its
true destiny – the internal combustion engine.
That year Peugeot introduced a four-wheeler with Daimler engine. Innovation
was constant – the first tyres from Michelin were tried out on a Peugeot
Type 6 during the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris car race in the mid-1890s.
Sporting triumphs
Sporting associations continue today, though early steps were a little odd. In
1891 a Peugeot four-wheel car entered the Paris-Brest road race – a bicycle
event. However, the Peugeot entry proved a point. It managed an average
speed of 14.7km/hr and on the return leg covered 2 200km!
The first car race against the clock (Paris-Bordeaux-Paris, 1895) was won by a
Peugeot Type 7. In 1913, Peugeot won the Automobile Club de France Grand
Prix, beat the speed record at Brooklands with a speed of 170,88km/hr and
won the Indianapolis 500.
Fast forward to the 1960s and the Peugeot 404 showed Africa its paces with
the brand’s first victory in the East Africa Safari, ultimately winning three in a
row (1966, 1967 and 1968). In the 70s, the 504 followed up with triumphs in
the Safari, Bandama and the Tour Maroc.
The 205 Turbo then took Peugeot to World Rally Championship glory in 1985
and 1986. The brand returned to WRC supremacy in the early ’90s courtesy
of the 206.
Track success has been similarly impressive. The legendary Peugeot 905
powered to its first triumph at Suzuka in 1991, followed a year later with wins
at Silverstone, Le Mans 24 Hours, Donington, Suzuka and Magny-Cours.

But let’s get back from the track record to the historical record… Peugeot
owners may be interested to learn that the first person to join this rather
select ‘club’ was a gentleman who took delivery of a Type 3 in October 1891.
Five years later, Arnaud Peugeot founded Automobiles Peugeot to specialise in
car and truck manufacturing and in 1898 Peugeot became a proud exhibitor
at the first Paris Motor Show.
Innovation through world wars, depression and recession was constant.
Brakes on all four wheels were the major advance of the early 20s. Peugeot’s
first diesel models appeared in 1928. A year later, the 6 CV 201 introduced
Peugeot’s distinctive model numbering system. In 1931, this model became the
first car in the world with independent front wheels. The folding roof was one
of the big innovations of 1934.
After WW2, the 203 carried Peugeot’s first monocoque* car body. In 1956,
the 403 became the first Peugeot with a curved windscreen. Three years later
the 403 diesel became the world’s first mass-produced diesel car. Peugeot
unveiled the world’s first turbo diesel in 1979.
Advances never stop. They simply get, well, more advanced. In 1994, Peugeot
introduced its first electric concept car, the iOn. In 1999, the brand fitted the
first Particulate Filter to a diesel engine… and so it goes on.

Lion’s a shape-shifter
For constant evolution simply look at the Peugeot lion. Back in 1858 it
represented pride in quality and still does, but the look has changed as
the brand has evolved. It has been featured by the brand as a figurine,
on a mountain crag, as a close-up of head and mane and as a heraldic
symbol.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary, the lion is changing again. A simpler,
more dynamic logo has been conceptualised. Its arrival is imminent… on
the new RCZ.
You’ll know it when you see it. This lion’s got style and panache
– and 200 years of history behind it.
* In case you were wondering… monocoque (meaning ‘single shell’ in French) is a
construction technique that utilises the external skin of a vehicle to support some
or most of the load, as opposed to using an internal frame or chassis that is then
covered with cosmetic body panels.

Multi-tasking used to mean opening a bottle of wine and drinking it. Not any
more. These days you take snapshots with your phone, soak up Van Morrison
via Nano during your work-out and go to your car for language lessons.
S
o it’s a relief to find that Peugeot has pioneered
a type of convergence that gives you the best of
both worlds without driving you to distraction.
The brand has developed a two-in-one package for
those of us who can’t make up our minds whether
we want to drive a sports car or a cabriolet coupé.
There’s no longer any need to be schizophrenic
about it. You simply go for the new generation of
performance-packed Peugeot CCs with 115kW of
power under the bonnet.

Classy choice
You’ll still have to choose one from two though... There’s the
207 CC or the 308 CC. But in either event you get a classy CC
that thinks it’s a sports car.
The 207 CC now has a beefed up six-speed manual box backed
by 115kW of raw power while the 308 CC opts for an upgraded
six-speed auto with the same power output.
With a high performance CC you can open her up in both senses
of the word. Retract the roof, turn on the sporting power and
you are assured of a windswept open-topped experience that
really will blow your hair back. Alternatively, in your more sedate
moments, simply put the top down and race up the gears without
turning a hair.
Both the 207 CC and the 308 CC come loaded with the latest
advances in active and passive safety, including a minimum
of four airbags. Of course, sports cars don’t usually offer you
luggage space and room for groceries, but beneath the sleek
styling you will find that these beauties do.
High-level comfort
Elevated levels of comfort and style are standard in both
models. That means full leather upholstery and heated seats.
Your height-adjustable steering wheel comes with heightadjustable driver and passenger seats to match.
Exterior aesthetics have been subtly refined as you would
expect of a CC with top-end performance characteristics.
Even the service plans have a rather superior look and feel.
The 207 CC is packaged with a four-year/60 000km service
plan while the 308 CC offers a five-year/90 000km service
plan.
Looks like Peugeot designers have got this multi-tasking
trend buttoned down. They were tasked with adding fiery
performance to the ultimate in cool and nailed it first time!

ooks like Peugeot’s first crossover has gone over rather well. In fact, lots of South Africans
have been going overboard for the 3008 since it
took to our roads – and various other surfaces – early in 2010.
It seems to be the SUV you gotta luv – when the
crossover comes to town, Peugeot’s marketers get the
same reaction: ‘Love the look and feel...’, ‘Love the Cielo
roof*…’, ‘Absolutely love the heads-up display*…’. Those
comments are typical feedback from what became a
three-month love-in as Peugeot took the 3008 on an
extended post-launch promotional tour.

Steep climb from a standing start
Peugeot was not previously represented in the crossover market
segment. The challenge was to move from a standing start on
the showroom floor to a steep upward climb on the sales graph.
Feedback from the national test-drive team indicates mission
accomplished.
The 3008 squad ran promotions and test-drives for 78 days,
conducted test-drives for 2 645 members of the public and gained
exposure to an estimated 14 million consumers all over the country!
Hourly competition draws ensured massive interest, with winners
collecting mall vouchers worth R500. Simultaneously, a national
3008 contest rolled out with a crossover prize that will take the
winners over to France for the holiday of a lifetime.
On the road or off the beaten track
At the same time, the crossover was demonstrating that it really does
combine glamorous looks and rugged performance. What better
way to prove it than on tour in a rigorous sport that turns heads while
showcasing a stunning turn of speed… professional women’s cycling.
For optimum exposure Peugeot partnered team Bizhub, one of the
country’s most successful women’s cycling teams. For the 2010
season, 10 riders from four countries have been supported by two
very distinctive team cars – the rugged but rakish 3008!
Champions like these put heavy demands on themselves and on
you, whether you’re on the road or off the beaten track halfway up a
mountainside for suspension-shaking mountain bike events. Heavy
rains early in the year ensured the 3008 had a testing all-weather
workout. Did the crossover overcome? You betcha!
John Robertson, team owner and manager, was delighted with the
performance: “With four bikes in the rack up top, four or five people
on board and a car full of gear, the 3008 performed perfectly every
time. On the road, off the road, in the mud… we never had a problem.
Great roadholding… great acceleration… it packs a lot of power and
you can pack a lot in.”
“When we de-fleet at the end of the season, I’ll be buying one for my
personal use. That’s how impressed I’ve been with the 3008 – a great
car,” John concludes.
That’s pretty much what a lot of South Africans have been saying. Off
road or on, this crossover will bowl you over.

performance.
Judging by the turnout,
Jozi’s glitterati certainly
managed to escape the ordinary
for one glorious night, thanks in no
small part to the 308 GTi!

Ntshongwana.
Poppy’s only 26, but she’s already a star of drive-time radio. As such she’s

Bonang B’s the name, but she’s an A-list celeb whether the
gig is on TV or radio, in fashion or sport. Now she’s officially
joined Peugeot’s A-team as a brand ambassador.
Bonang ‘B’ Matheba has the sleek lines and eye-catching
aesthetics invariably associated with the 207 CC model she
is promoting. She also has style, performance and inner-drive
– a perfect combination of Peugeot attributes. And at just
22, she already has an amazing track-record as a successful
performer.
Bonang made her media debut aged just 15 on SABC TV as a presenter
of successful kids programming. Since then you’ve seen her on some of
TV’s most popular shows, in countless TV commercials and upmarket
promo spots.
She’s the new host of Kaizer Chiefs TV on SuperSport and made a
seamless progression to radio as the presenter of Airborne with UR Gal B on YFM 99.2.
Music fans know her as the youngest person to host a major awards
ceremony at the Metro FM Music Awards. A few months later she
presented the most celebrated award at the MTN South African
Music Awards.
Bonang is celebrated in her own right. At the Kickoff Magazine launch
she featured as one of the SoccerBabes. She then made the FHM VIP
List as an Axe Dark Angel. The same magazine’s readers voted her
one of the Sexiest Women in the World, a verdict they doubtlessly
confirmed when she appeared in the mag’s Lingerie Special.
Bonang is also a Goodwill Ambassador for South Africa’s National
Youth Services and oversees her own promotions agency. This non-stop
go-getter has also launched her own clothing range, Just B (The Bonang

Gina Read, owner and Marketing Manager of Cloud9Golf, is certainly in seventh heaven about their Peugeot Boxer: “… it suits our needs perfectly! We don’t need to do more than one trip to a golf venue nor pull a trailer.”
Specialising in the arrangement and marketing of golf related events,
Gina and her team is committed to providing clients and golfers with
professional, efficiently run tournaments. Their Boxer enables them

Partners against grime…
National cleaning and security company Red Alert TSS recently
purchased eight new Peugeot Partner 1.6 panel vans to help them
run their East London Cleaning Division.
“To enable our cleaning department and their dedicated staff to
achieve and exceed the levels of service excellence within this
industry, we required a vehicle that would stand up to the challenge,”
National Fleet team member Lee Williams explains.
In addition, they were also looking for a vehicle that would offer them
cost- and fuel-efficiency, durability and reliability, ample load space
to transport machinery and large volumes of cleaning supplies,
and easy loading to maximise productivity. “Comfort and drive also
played their part,” adds Lee, “as well as having a vehicle that would
complement our brand and enhance our image.”
They found all this and more in the Peugeot Partner. With a payload
of 850kg and volume capacity of 3.3m3, the Partner’s loading
capacity is among the best in its class. The Common Rail HDi
engine delivers 66kW of power at 4 000rpm at an impressive fuel
consumption rate of only 5.8l/100km (mixed consumption). When

company’s recent brand revamp.
Peugeot East London then sweetened this already irresistible

Our
-heroes
are so much less taxing
W
hat do the 207, the 308 and the 3008 crossover have
in common? Yes, the aesthetics are irresistible, they’re
great to drive and they set you apart as a bit of a style
icon… but what else?
The answer is that they each have an eco-warrior in the range, though they are better
known as the 207HDi, the 308HDi and the 3008HDi. Since the introduction of carbon
taxes on new vehicle sales, these vehicles have gone easier on your pocket and easier
on the environment.
Check out the green credentials. The 207HDi emits just 120g of CO² per kilometre.
With the 308HDi the rate is 120g/km and even on the 3008HDi the emissions still
only come out at 146g/km. This gives these HDi heroes a significant advantage over
many competitors.
(While we’re on the subject of bragging about our super-low carbon emissions, we
simply have to mention the zippy Peugeot 107. With its 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder, 12V petrol
engine, it emits a mere 106g of CO2 per km – a little green warrior par excellence!)
Efficient and sensitive
This eco-edge may come as a surprise to Lion lovers who look on HDi diesel options
as high-performance over-achievers with great top-end torque and extremely rapid
acceleration. All of the above is true. But performance-junkies now have something else
to salivate over… the environmental sensitivity of these ultra-efficient engines.
How’s this possible? Well, Peugeot engineers have always been blue-sky, green-fields
thinkers, and back in 1959 they led diesel car development in France and have been at
the cutting edge ever since. They came up with Europe’s first turbo diesel in 1979 and
in 2000 combined their remarkable HDi engine with a new pollution control concept,
the diesel particulate filter known by its French initials, FAP.
HDi achieves more complete combustion thanks to a Common Rail multiple injection
system at pressures of up to 1,800 bar. Extremely fine fuel atomisation then enables
complete combustion.

Saving the planet
On top of acceleration from low speeds (courtesy of very high torque), the engine
delivers superior sound insulation. Engineers say this is because the pre-injection
of fuel smoothes the noise of combustion and attenuates vibrations – so you’re
fighting noise pollution as well as saving the planet.
Anyway, the new generation of HDi, high pressure, direct injection diesel engines
cuts carbon dioxide emissions to levels 20% lower than classic, indirect injection
engines. There is also a 40% reduction in carbon monoxide, 50% in hydrocarbons
and 60% in particles.
The most noticeable benefit of the FAP is the elimination of polluting soot
particles (the black exhaust smoke you choke on when following poorly
maintained trucks up the slightest incline).
FAP destroys diesel particles and reduces emissions to a barely measurable
0.004g/km. With fewer particles to choke on, the engine sucks in pure
performance and pushes out more power.
Incredibly, fuel consumption falls at the same time. HDi engines provide a fuel
saving of over 20% against the previous generation of diesel engines.
Clean technology
So you contribute less to the greenhouse gas effect while drawing on fewer
non-replenishable carbon resources.
Overseas, Peugeot gets more and more credit for the environmental benefits
bestowed by its 30-year investment in clean diesel technology. The public has
cottoned on big time and increasingly applauds the company’s commitment to
sustainable mobility.
Peugeot’s Tremery factory in France has become the world’s biggest diesel
manufacturing plant. For two years in a row, Peugeot has been Europe’s biggest
seller of low-emission cars and looks to be headed for a third straight top spot.
Other accolades keep coming in. The super-efficient Peugeot 308HDi turbo-diesel
cleaned up recently by achieving a new world record for fuel efficiency, achieving
consumption of 3.13 litres per 100km while covering 1 919km on one 60-litre
tank of diesel.
Cuts emissions
Developments are not going to stop. It’s already been established that an HDi
engine can take up to a 30% biodiesel blend, which cuts even more emissions.
If governments were really serious about the environment they’d pay us to
drive a Peugeot HDi…
However, Peugeot did welcome spring with an offer of trade-in assistance for
those moving to eco-sensitive HDi options. A chance to customise your own
finance package was available on some models.
Owner-friendly as well as eco-friendly… that can’t be bad.
