August 2015 Volume 37, Issue 8 GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT Hola!! "A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways they're capable of understanding.” ~ Steve Prefontaine Since my injury or lack of doctors figuring out my illness, it has been hard to sit on the sidelines. I have been able to attend a few of the races and see the joy on runners faces finishing their races. Running with Devils 5K August 1 8:00 a.m. Lowell, Indiana Rotary Ramble 5K August 8 8:00 a.m. Crown Point, Indiana Tour De LaPorte 13.1 Miles/5K August 22 6:30 a.m. LaPorte, Indiana Lowell Labor Day 5K September 5 8:00 a.m. Lowell, Indiana Popcorn Panic 5 Miles September 12 7:30 p.m. Valparaiso, Indiana Tower Run 8K September 20 9:00 a.m. Michigan City, Indiana Hawaii 5K September 26 9:30 a.m. Schererville, Indiana Hero Half Marathon September 27 8:00 a.m. Chesterton, Indiana Jose F Lopez President Most recently at the Extra -Mile Challenge, I watched everyone come across the finish line. I saw the different artwork by the runners and spectators. This also motivated me to say the heck with the doctors and go out there and have fun. So, I plan to start running again because I am hopeful that I will be able to run my fall marathon. Speaking of the Extra Mile Challenge, it has grown from its beginning in 2013. Many of the Gold Cup members that approached me that evening were glad to see it as a Gold Cup Race. I’d like to thank my Gold Cup chairperson, Barb Hamner, and her committee on selecting this race. Kudos to Heather and Todd Henderlong for putting together a great event. Another great event was the Public Enemy 5K. I was not able to attend, but overheard from runners the great reviews it received. New course a little tougher, but it seemed everyone had fun. Kudos to Tim Fealy for feeding the runners appetite for challenges. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped collect plastic caps in memory of Rachel Maldonado-Rodriguez. The bench has been completed and will be located at the Hobart Middle School. (Just drew a big blank, this happens when I do not get to run and gather my thoughts.) Remember train smart and not foolishly. The weather has been very unpredictable as we look forward to the challenging month of August. So stay hydrated, dress properly for the weather conditions, and if you run at night, dress appropriately. "The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start." ~ John Bingham, No Need for Speed: A Beginner’s Guide to the Joy of Running Remember, "Run to have Fun" Semper Fi Jose F Lopez "Gunny" Barb Hamner Gold Cup Chairman GOLD CUP CORNER RACE EVALUATION SUMMARIES Overall score is based on percentage of outstanding remarks in 14 categories with scoring as follows: 80% and above — Outstanding 70-79% — Good 60-69% — Above Average 50-59% — Average 49% and below — Poor RACE DESCRIPTIONS Lowell Labor Day 5K Date/Time: Sept. 5 (8:00 a.m.) Location: Lowell Description: Moderately challenging. A few upgrades. Mostly on pavement. Straight away to finish on grass. Popcorn Panic 5 Miles (5th Elite Race) Date/Time: Sept. 12 (7:30 a.m.) Location: Valparaiso Descript ion: Challenging course. Uphill at start and finish of race. A few hills throughout the course. Entirely on pavement. Tower Run 8K Date/Time: Sept. 20 (9:00 a.m.) Location: Michigan City Description: Extremely challenging course. Mostly pavement. Must run up a large hill to a tower in the middle of the race. Hawaii 5K Date/Time: Sept. 26 (9:30 a.m.) Location: Schererville Description: Challenging crosscountry race. Pavement for approximately first quarter mile then field until final stretch, which is on gravel. Hero Half Marathon Date/Time: Sept. 27 (8:00 a.m.) Location: Chesterton Description: Challenging crosscountry course. Munster Rotary 10K/5K Overall: Above Average High Points: Easy registration process, great instructions by race director before start of race, nice refreshments--water, gatorade, bagels, bananas, oranges, and donuts. Area for possible improvement: Awards ceremony was long and disorganized. Suggest giving awards for 5K approximately 45 minutes after 10K start. Firecracker 5K Overall: Outstanding High Points: Great communication via walkie-talkies from race director to volunteers. Medical van on-site and visible. Well-marked course with plenty of volunteers cheering for runners. Raffle prizes pre-drawn during the race. Area for possible improvement: Pace car needs to be ahead of lead runners. It was in the middle of the pack. Public Enemy 5K Overall: Outstanding High Points: Plenty of volunteers at key intersections. Great water station that runners passed three times. Liked the course change. Unique awards--piece of jailhouse in Crown Point. Police demo with dogs, helicopter landing, and gangster paraphernalia. Area for possible improvement: Earlier start time. Suggest 8:00 a.m. instead of 9:00 a.m. Brickyard 5 Miles/5K Overall: Good High Points: Volunteers at key turns and intersections. Love the bricks for awards. Great selection of fruit for refreshments. Online and paper registration options. Good instructions to runners before the race. Areas for possible improvement: Long lines at pre-registration table. Suggest splitting lines by last names. Some pre-registered runners did not receive shirt or received wrong size shirt. Suggest setting aside or putting pre-registered shirts in goodie bags. Pre-registered runners should get shirts before any race day registered runners. Nativity 5K Overall: Above Average High Points: Nice medals and timely award ceremony. Volunteers at key intersections and turns. Water stations well manned. Areas for possible improvement: Race is too long by approx. 0.1 mile. Suggest moving start line. More volunteers along the course for traffic control. ExtraMile 1-Mile Challenge Overall: Outstanding High Points: Flat and fast course. Every quarter mile marked. No vehicle traffic. No delays in start times. Plenty of volunteers along the course. Nice plaques, medals, and shirts. AWESOME refreshments--tacos, nachos with salsa, hot dogs, chips, sub sandwiches, ice-cream, cupcakes, wine, beer, watermelon, and water. Shoe vendors on site. DJ made several announcements for runners to get into corrals, introduced vendors, and played great music. Area for possible improvement: If possible, have Clydesdale/Athena run against each other instead of by age. 2 100 MILE CLUB — 6-MONTH UPDATE RAFFLE WINNERS Striders can join anytime during 2015. Tina and I have been together for seven years and married for five this past April. Paisley is four, and we think it is awesome that she looks at running as fun and begs us to do it. As of now, she cannot wait to do track. Pryce is two and was the first baby born in Northwest Indiana on 12-1212. He is our little wrecking ball. Both the kids love when we go to group runs so they can see their friends, "our running friends." It is awesome that they are seeing the fun that can come from a healthy lifestyle. How long have you been a Strider Member? This is only the start of our second year as Striders. How did you hear about the Striders? My first race was Ruff Tuff and in the Buff in 2014, and I only knew one person at the race -- Sara Post. She told me about the Striders and the Gold Cup races. I think I signed up within the next month. When did you start running and why? In April 2013 Tina and I quit smoking and started working out to live a healthier life for us and our kids. I had shoulder surgery and could not ride a bike while in rehab. My sister Rachel was visiting in July that year and asked if I wanted to go running with her. I thought no problem since Tina and I had been doing cardio video workouts. I was in store for a very rude awakening when I could not even run for more than five minutes without my calves feeling like they were going to explode. I then took it as a challenge to work up to a fun 5K run by the end of September that year. Tina and I both trained and finished the Run/Walk at Brookfield Zoo. I ran through the winter and got hooked on trail races and have kept running. Tina quit, but towards the middle of last summer started again since she felt she was missing out on a big part of my life. Now we run together almost daily, and I push the double stroller in our training. We are different paces and still run together and both have been improving our times. Also, running together has been one of the best things for our relationship. While out on runs we can have "therapy sessions" and air out things very freely that are on our minds. It is great to share an interest with the person you love and to grow together with it. What has been your favorite Gold Cup Race so far? Favorite Gold Cup race I've run is the Ramp Run this past year. It's a cool course since there is a different aspect with the ramp, and it was the first road race in which I placed in my age group. Best experience with a gold cup race was last year volunteering for the Chicago Marathon with Tina. What an awe inspiring sight to see so many runners and to be able to be a part of it with so many people that we have met through the Striders. Outside of running, what other hobbies are you interested in? With work, family, and training there isn't a lot of free time, but I enjoy gardening, fishing, hunting, and love singing. Years ago I used to be in two local bands. Joe Reeves is also one of our Thursday night group run leaders. Come on out and run with the Reeves family. Look out for these ladies sporting lots of bling at Nativity 5K. This is the first time in recent history this meet was held outside the Indianapolis area. We had a total of 24 athletes participate, and most of the kids qualified in at least one event to move on to the Regional Meet in Lisle, Illinois, on July 11 and 12. In order to move on to Regionals the participants had to finish in the top eight in an event. For many, this was their first big meet and a State Qualifier for USATF brings some very good competition. To make things even more difficult, all the younger age groups had two years combined, which is difficult especially with the various ages of kids’ growth spurts. Great job to all the kids who participated, all the coaches are very proud of them. Thank you as well to all the coaches who came out to help. The following is a list of events showing the Junior Striders who participated, their age groups, and their places: 200 Meter Ena Gilliana – Girls 8 and Under – 7th Ani Gilliana – Girls 9-10 – 6th Mason Benitez – Boys 9-10 – 19th Hannah Geiser – Girls 13-14 – 26th Luke Villarreal – Boys 13-14 – 4th 400 Meter Mason Benitez – Boys 9-10 – 11th Luke Robertson – Boys 9-10 – 14th Ava Gilliana – Girls 13-14 – 6th Luke Villarreal – Boys 13-14 – 3rd 800 Meter Elliza Pycraft – Girls 9-10 – 3rd Mason Benitez – Boys 9-10 – 9th Abby McBride – Girls 11-12 – 8th Hannah Fitzgerald – Girls 13-14 – 5th Nicole Brandy – Girls 13-14 – 6th Emma Fitzgerald – Girls 13-14 – 7th Kristyn Hoffmann – Girls 13-14 – 10th Dylan Draves – Boys 13-14 – 8th 1500 Meter Elliza Pycraft – Girls 9-10 – 2nd Payton Boyer – Girls 9-10 – 3rd Reilly Boyer – Girls 9-10 – 4th Abby McBride – Girls 9-10 – 11th Jordyn Boyer – Girls 13-14 – 1st Ava Gilliana – Girls 13-14 – 3rd Hannah Fitzgerald – Girls 13-14 – 4th Nicole Brandy – Girls 13-14 – 5th Emma Fitzgerald - Girls 13-14 – 9th Emily Gaylord – Girls 13-14 – 10th Dylan Draves – Boys 13-14 – 11th Hunter Boyer – Boys 15-16 – 1st 3000 Meter Reilly Boyer – 11-12 Girls – 4th Jordyn Boyer – 13-14 Girls – 1st Emily Gaylord – Girls 13-14 – 7th Dylan Draves – Boys 13-14 – 8th Hunter Boyer – Boys 15-16 – 2nd 80 M Hurdles Luke Stento – 11-12 Boys – 3rd 100 M Hurdles Ruth Stamp – 13-14 Girls - 11th 2000 Meter Steeplechase Taesa Stock – 15-16 Girls – 1st Hunter Boyer – 15-16 Boys – 2nd 4X800 Relay Nicole Brandy, Hannah Fitzgerald, Emma Fitzgerald, and Jordyn Boyer – 13-14 Girls – 1st High Jump Payton Boyer – Girls 9-10 – 2nd Reilly Boyer – Girls 11-12 – 3rd Luke Stento – Boys 11-12 – 6th Jordyn Boyer – Girls 13-14 – 5th Ruth Stamp – Girls 13-14 – 8th Jordan Anderson – Boys 15-16 – 1st Long Jump Payton Boyer – Girls 9-10 – 3rd Hailey Geiser – Girls 9-10 – 9th Luke Robertson – Boys 9-10 – 8th Luke Stento – Boys 11-12 – 11th Hannah Geiser – Girls 13-14 – 6th Ruth Stamp – Girls 13-14 – 21st Shot Put Hailey Geiser – Girls 9 – 10 – 5th Javelin Throw Kristyn Hoffmann – Girls 13-14 – 2nd Emma Fitzgerald – Girls 13-14 – ATTENTION ! Although this meet is only between competitors in Indiana and Illinois, the competition is very tough. This is especially true in the younger age groups as there are two years combined. Only the top five advance to the USATF Junior Olympics. The following Junior Striders participated along with their events and places: Ena Gilliana (8 & under female) – 10th place in the 200 Ani Gilliana (9/10 female) – 11th place in the 100, 11th in the 200 Elliza Pycraft (9/10 female) – 11th place in the 800, 9th in the 1500 Payton Boyer (9/10 female) – 8th place in the 1500, 8th place in the long jump, 3rd place in the high jump Hailey Geiser (9/10 female) – 9th place in the shot put Reilly Boyer (11/12 female) – 5th place in the 1500, 4th place in the 3000, 7th place in the high jump Ava Gilliana (13/14 female) – 12th place in the 400, 6th place in the 1500 Nicole Brandy (13/14 female) – 9th place in the 1500, 10th place in the javelin Jordyn Boyer (13/14 female) – 3rd place in the 1500, 5th place in the 3000, 10th place in the high jump Hannah Geiser (13/14 female) – 12th place in the long jump Kristyn Hoffmann (13/14 female) – 5th place in the javelin Emma Fitzgerald (13/14 female) – 8th place in the javelin Luke Villarreal (13/14 male) – 8th place in the 200, 8th in the 400 Dylan Draves (13/14 male) – 12th place in the 800, 7th in the 3000 Hunter Boyer (15/16 male) – 5th place in the 1500, 2nd in the 2000 steeplechase, 3rd in the 3000 Jordan Anderson (15/16 male) – 2nd place in the high jump 4X800 Team of Nicole Brandy, Hannah Fitzgerald, Emma Fitzgerald, Jordyn Boyer – 4th place Only a few of the Junior Striders advanced to the Junior Olympic Meet. There were however, many more who had personal best times and were pushed to do better at the meet. Great job to all who participated. Good luck to those who are continuing. AAU District Meet Results Several of the Junior Striders traveled to Indianapolis for the AAU District Meet on Saturday, June 27. Everyone advanced to the Regional Meet held on July 4 and 5 in Rockford, Illinois. AAU Regional Results After qualifying at the District AAU Meet, there were more than a handful of the Junior Striders who attended the Regional AAU Meet in Rockford, Illinois, on July 4 and 5. The competition at that meet was much greater than at the state meet. In order to qualify to move on to the AAU Junior Olympics, the kids had to finish among the top five in their events. The participants and their events and places include the following: Allison Horin (11 year old female) – 8th in the 400, 3rd in the 1500 Nicole Brandy (13 year old female) – 3rd in the 800 Dylan Draves (13 year old male) – 3rd in the 800, 1st in the 3000 Taesa Stock (15-16 year old female) – 4th in the 2000 Steeplechase Jordan Anderson (15-16 year old female) – 2nd in the High Jump Eddie Guess (17-18 year old male) – 5th in the pole vault As you can see, all of the Junior Striders who participated in the meet qualified to go to the Junior Olympics in at least one event. Way to go kids! We are all proud of you. If you are going to the Junior Olympics, Good Luck! 6 JUNIOR STRIDER NEWS (continued) ∞ Over the 4th of July week and weekend the USATF and Hersey partnered to bring a national competition to the Mid-West. The meet was held from June 30—July 5 in Lisle, Illinois. Due to this being a national meet, the competition was very tough. There were a handful of Junior Striders who competed in the meet including: Nicole Brandy, Hunter Boyer, Jordyn Boyer, Reilly Boyer, and Payton Boyer. The top eight places in each event made it on the podium and received medals. Some of the kids had a personal best time in an event with one notable result, Hunter Boyer finished fifth in the 2000 Steeplechase. ∞ There are no longer local and state Hershey meets being held as in the past, but apparently they have been holding these national meets in the Mid-West over the past few years. This may be something to consider in the future for a national meet that is relatively close. ∞ There were many Junior Striders who came out and ran the Extra Mile 1-Mile Challenge on Thursday evening, July 9 in Valparaiso. It was a great event to conclude many of the kids’ track season. Many of the kids and coaches participated in the event and many also stayed after for food, drinks, music, and of course the rock wall. It was great to see all of you there and see how far you have come since the start of the track season. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE 2015 COUNTY LINE ORCHARD RACES! A message from Sue Brown Nickerson, Event Director I want to start by saying thanks to all those who raced or volunteered on May 17 to benefit the Junior Striders with most of the proceeds going towards scholarships.
