ANFAO
ANFAO,
the
Italian
Optical
Goods
Manufacturers’
Association, represents virtually all of Italy’s eyewear companies and
currently has more than 100 members. It was established in Milan in 1954
to pursue a number of objectives: first and foremost to generate profitable
synergies among the member companies and, in a spirit of complete
cooperation, promote their interests at national and international level. Its
ultimate goal is to export the Made-in-Italy philosophy, which has always
been associated with quality throughout the world.
ANFAO also safeguards the interests of its member companies and
promotes industry projects and strategies, including MIDO international
trade exhibition in Italy.
The Association also promotes eyecare information campaigns through
CDV, the Eyecare Commission whose members are industry experts,
including ophthalmologists, opticians and optometrists. On the international
front, CDV is member of CIAV (Comité International pour l’Amélioration de
la Vue). whose mission is to provide information about proper eye hygiene
and safety.
Another very important activity is ANFAO’s cooperation with Certottica, the
National Institute for the Certification of Optical Products.
ANFAO is also a member of EUROM, European Federation of the Optical
and Precision Mechanics Industry, which represent the various interests of
the optical and precision mechanics industry and promote cooperation at
European level.

EYEWEAR COUTURE CULTURE
An undisputed major player o the fashion scene, the “Made in
Italy Eyewear” has established itself on the international catwalks and set the
rules for the coming seasons. Eyewear is aiming to become timeless by
focusing on classic colors and an understated styling, which is all about
quality, discrete logos and special details.
Frames are invisible or making its presence with clear-cut lines and
shapes in square or rectangular designs. Frames change, are flexible,
innovative, ultra-resistant, anti-allergenic, etc. They adapt to clothing that is
moving in new directions in search of an elegant and casual comfort.
Eyewear’s purpose is to highlight or draw attention to personal style.
This trend has a magical opulence that also manages, through the
fascinating balance of its details, to be entertaining. Eyewear is sometimes
produced in a limited edition, with pure god, mirrored lenses, Swarvoski
crystals, diamante’ etc, materials that change with the light and angle of
view. Classic colors are back, black and white, lenses are very dark but with
an immediate contemporary interpretation. The classics are the preferred
choice for men too, Eyewear to create a sense of mystery, to help build a
personality.
If Italy has to be considered the native land of optical industry, then Venice
would undoubtedly be its birthplace. Although, the precise identity about the
first inventor of eyeglasses remains controversial, the geographical origins of
this business remain however evidenced.
The earliest historical reference to magnification glasses was
confirmed not later than the year 1285, by the existence of a Venetian shop
that produced corrective glasses for reading. The usage of the term
“eyeglasses” was first recorded in 1317, on a commercial document giving
a local merchant the license to sell a “device” we call today “ Eyeglasses”.
3
EYEWEAR COUTURE CULTURE
The commerce of eyeglasses expanded in the European region
through traveling merchants, and it is only around the end of the 19th
century that the production of eyeglasses on an industrial scale was initiated,
by Angelo Frescura, a merchant of eyeglasses in Belluno city, Venice
Province.
The first real eyeglasses were first produced of leather, substituted
afterwards by wood, natural horn, then metal. Early eyepieces could be held
in place by hand or by exerting pressure on the nose Eyeglasses linked in the
middle were used mainly by clergymen and aristocracy, and were
considered a powerful symbol of culture and wealth.
Hundred years later the design of frames was improved thanks to the
introduction of eyeglasses with temples passing over the ears in 1727. By the
end of the 19th century plastic material was introduced in the production of
frames offering to the users a wider choice of models and styles.
The first eyeglasses were mounted with convex lenses in beryllium or
natural quartz permitting the correction of only presbyopia of elder persons.
Successively, glass replaced these materials and the concave lenses for the
correction of myopia were born.
Not all glasses are designed solely for vision correction, but are worn for
protection, viewing visual information (such as stereoscopy) or simply just or
aesthetic or fashion values. Sunglasses allow better vision in bright daylight
and may protect against damage from high levels of ultraviolet light.
4
EYEWEAR COUTURE CULTURE
Despite the increasing popularity of contact lenses and laser
corrective eye surgery, glasses remain very common, as their technology has
improved. Frames are made nowadays of special memory metal alloys that
return to their correct shape after being bent. Other frames have
spring-loaded hinges. Either of these designs offers dramatically better
ability to withstand the stresses of daily wear and the occasional accident.
Modern frames are also often made from strong, light-weight materials such
as titanium alloys, which were not available in earlier times.
Dynamic, creative and ambitious are the qualifications to be
attributed to the Italian eyewear sector, that have faced successfully all
market challenges since the mid of the previous century. This resulted in a
very efficient distributing infrastructure, an important number of
manufacturing companies (1005) mainly in the Veneto region (Belluno
district), and a group of outlets counting more than 17.500 in constant
increase, matching the growth and the demand of the sector in international
markets.
Thus, the Italian optician, has proven himself as leader of the sector
occupying an important place in the global scenario, by constantly renewing
itself according the to requirements of the final users, becoming more and
more extravagant, particularly the youth population.
