Following the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001, state and local government officials have increased opportunities for citizens to become an integral part of protecting the homeland and supporting the local first responders. Officials agree that the formula for ensuring a more secure and safer homeland consists of preparedness, training, and citizen involvement in supporting first responders. In January 2002, the President of the United States launched Citizen Corps, to capture the spirit of service that emerged throughout our communities following the terrorist attacks. Citizen Corps was created to help coordinate volunteer activities that will make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation. It provides opportunities for people to participate in a range of measures to make their families, their homes, and their communities safer from the threats of crime, terrorism, and disasters of all kinds. Citizen Corps programs build on the successful efforts that are in place in many communities around the country to prevent crime and respond to emergencies. Programs that started through local innovation are the foundation for Citizen Corps and this national approach to citizen participation in community safety. Citizen Corps is coordinated nationally by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency. In this capacity, FEMA works closely with other federal entities, state and local governments, first responders and emergency managers, the volunteer community, and the Corporation for National & Community Service From reading the Pristine Place Newsletter you have learned about both CERT and Crime Watch. In Hernando County there is a 3rd partner in Citizen Corps. After 16 years of volunteer service to our community on Crime Watch, I have the honor of announcing the retirement from Crime Watch of Dolly and Oscar Braggiotti. Dolly and Oscar have preformed their duties for 16 years with dedication and dependability. This community owes each of them a huge thank you. We hope they will enjoy their "retirement " and find some time to join us at a meeting when they have the opportunity to do so. We had a wonderful night. Both Sheriff's deputies did a great job. We had no issues at any of the gates. I received no complaints about any activities inside the gates. I can tell you that the kids and parents coming into the front gate as well as leaving, expressed their deep gratitude for are community opening are homes for them to trick or treat at. Personally I was truly impressed with how polite everyone was. We continue to ask for your consideration to join Crime Watch. This would require about a 2 hour a MONTH time commitment to preform the patrol and about 45 minutes to attend our meetings, if you choice to. Please feel free to give me a call at 352-428-7387 I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. This may come as a surprise to everyone but we are all gaining years on our age. The volunteers in this community do an amazing amount of work to help. Crime Watch members alone, will contribute over 2,200 man hours . As we gain on the years, we do need to have a few new, perhaps younger members. While we do make note of non-operating street lights as we patrol, when you notice one near your home, please make note of the pole number and place a call to WREC and report it. Enjoy it indoors now, protect it from cold until spring, and then plant in the garden for re-blooming next year. Most of our holiday plants can be enjoyed throughout the year if cared for properly. Poinsettias like to be kept in a bright, warm, draft free place and watered when the soil surface becomes dry. Christmas cactus, chrysanthemums, cyclamen, and kalanchoe like brightly lit cool places and water sparingly. As we come to the end of another year it is time to keep doing those positive things that make our landscapes look good. I'm hoping that part of the look is because of the positive things we have been doing with our Florida-friendly landscapes throughout the year. As our grasses stop growing and become dormant, because it is colder now and the days are shorter, only an occasional mowing of the lawn will be necessary. Do not fertilize your lawns unless you have overseeded with rye grass seeds. When frost hits, your lawn will turn brown and no amount of fertilizer or extra water will change that color brown to green. Now is a good time to calibrate your irrigation system. Make sure your irrigation system is delivering ¾ of an inch of water to each of your zones on an “as needed” basis. Pinch back and remove seed heads and spent flowers from your annuals and this practice will promote dense plants with lots of flowers. Do not prune plants in your landscape at this time. Houseplants: Inspect regularly for pests on indoor plants. Keep in mind that plant specific temperature, light, and humidity are key to ensuring that indoor plants thrive. Soil Test: If plants did not perform as desired this year or new plantings are being planned, a soil test will reveal the specific nutrients that need to be applied. Compost: Composting is environmentally friendly and produces a beneficial soil amendment or mulch. Fallen leaves provide the carbon ingredient needed for successful composting Pests: While cooler weather generally means fewer pests, some populations actually increase at this time of year. Continue monitoring and treat as needed. December's Landscaping Tips Plant cold hardy annuals to brighten up your landscape. Mow your lawn as necessary. Sharpen your mower blades. Calibrate your irrigation system. Dead head your annuals. Do not fertilize and do not prune. Happy Holidays and Happy Gardening! Suggestions for December Planting and Plant Care Bedding Plants: To add color to the winter garden, plant masses of petunia, pansy, and snapdragon. Bulbs: Amaryllis is a popular plant for the holiday season. Force it to bloom now or plant outdoors for spring blooms. Herbs: Plant herbs that thrive in cool weather. Some to try are parsley, thyme, sage, dill, fennel, and cilantro. Vegetables: Reliable cool season vegetables to plant this month include celery, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, and carrot. Cold protection: Prepare now to protect tender plants should cold weather threaten. Fungal disease: Continue monitoring for brown patch and large patch fungal diseases until May. Proper cultural practices are key in control. 10% OFF First Service Only $100.00 min. order 12/14 Purchasing of Access Control Devices...
