Executive Note 07 13 08 14 10 15 Gary Johnson Vice President, North America Manufacturing It is my honor to now serve as vice president of North America Manufacturing on the heels of great leadership from the newly appointed Group Vice President of Global Manufacturing and Labor Affairs Bruce Hettle. I joined Ford 29 years ago and have served in various manufacturing and quality leadership roles, most recently as vice president of Manufacturing Operations for Asia Pacific. I am excited to be back in the U.S. and working with all of you. With new leadership comes change, but our manufacturing objectives remain the same; we are committed to producing high quality vehicles that our customers want and value. We will work together as One Team to deliver on the company’s plan for profitable growth and vision to become an auto and mobility company. 2015 proved to be a remarkable year for Ford. The company reported a record breaking full-year pre-tax profit and achieved the highest annual sales in the U.S. since 2005. We are just as excited about 2016, especially after seeing the reaction to some of the new products recently introduced at the North American International Auto Show. Those products include the all-new F-150 Raptor SuperCrew and the all-new Lincoln Continental, which was voted Best of Show by the Detroit News. I’d like to extend a special thank you to the UAW-Ford employees for serving as company ambassadors during the auto show. You were able to provide a unique perspective to auto show visitors, many of whom were surprised to learn that they were talking to the very people who build our vehicles. As we move further into the year, we have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact doing what we do best – working side by side to produce the best cars, trucks and SUVs that our customers deserve. Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do! Additionally, the company will make profit-sharing payments to approximately 50,000 eligible U.S. hourly employees on March 10, 2016. As part of the UAW-Ford collective bargaining agreement, Ford North America pre-tax profits of $9.3 billion will generate profit-sharing payments of approximately $9,300 per eligible employee on a full-year basis. Of the $9,300, a pull-ahead payment of $1,500 has already been made as part of the ratification agreement of 2015. EQUAL HOUSING LENDER 2 | January/February 2016 ALL-NEW FOCUS RS ROLLS OFF THE LINE IN GERMANY, SET TO ARRIVE AT U.S. DEALERSHIPS THIS SPRING With U.S. sales of Ford’s performance cars outpacing the overall industry, production kickoff for the company’s long-anticipated, 350-horsepower hot hatch couldn’t come at a better time. The first all-new Focus RS has rolled off the line in Saarlouis, Germany. The arrival of Focus RS in the United States this spring adds to a potent hot hatch lineup. The Ford Focus ST and Fiesta ST both have enjoyed critical acclaim and success. Sales of the Focus ST increased 9 percent last year while Fiesta ST saw a gain of 4 percent. Sales Ford’s U.S. sales were down 3 percent in January versus the same time last year. To understand the number, we need to dig a little deeper. January is historically a weak month for vehicle sales and this year was no exception. The industry had one extra “selling” weekend on the calendar in 2015, which made the year-over-year comparisons much more difficult on the light volumes of January. While we were down 3 percent relative to a flat industry, our average transaction prices (ATPs) increased again by a significant margin. Our ATPs increased by $1,800 in January, compared with year-ago – almost three times more than the overall industry average of about $600. Ford SUV sales increased 3 percent versus last year, marking our best sales start since 2004. The numbers were driven by sales of the new Ford Edge, which were up 28 percent. F-Series sales were down 5 percent in January, but F-Series ATPs grew by $2,500 last month, while incentive spending was down $500 versus a year ago. We had our best van sales start in 31 years driven largely by Transit sales, which were up 51 percent. We also saw a strong fleet result from Transit on the commercial side of the business with sales up 48 percent. Lincoln U.S. Lincoln sales were up 8 percent in January, marking the best start of the year for the luxury brand since 2008. That increase is largely due to the all-new Lincoln MKX, which posted a 51 percent increase in January. Lincoln SUVs had their best start since 2001. That’s the idea behind recruiting UAW-Ford employees and other production facility workers to present the products of their facility at the North American International Auto Show. During the auto show’s public days Jan. 16-23, employees from facilities ranging from Kentucky Truck Plant to Livonia Transmission Plant were on Ford’s stand to offer an expert viewpoint direct from the source. It’s been an unexpected surprise for current Ford owners and potential future customers. “People are very surprised to find out that I’m actually from Kentucky Truck Plant and that I’m not just talking about a truck I don’t know about,” said Steve Marrero, who was representing the F-series Super Duty lineup. “I know this truck; my hand is in this truck and I am building this truck. They’re very surprised about that.” Marrero, like many of the other employees on the floor, fielded questions and listened to feedback from customers and prospective buyers. He said he’s proud to be an ambassador for the brand and Steve Marrero of Kentucky Truck Plant shows a NAIAS guest some of the features on an allnew Super Duty. was honored to come to Detroit to represent KTP and his co-workers. Gin McCullough, a tech at Livonia Transmission Plant, said it was a privilege to be able to represent the company and the products she helped build at the auto show. “I’m very happy to have that privilege for the whole week,” she said. “We were randomly selected and I’m very active with my local and my union, so it was just a privilege to be asked to come here and I didn’t want to turn it down. “The people here are happy to see the actual auto workers who make the product and have more hands-on experience with the product.” John Kempf, a utility operator at Kansas City Assembly Plant, was on the floor answering questions about the Ford Transit lineup. “It feels good to be an ambassador for Ford, and I felt pretty proud of being selected,” he said. “A lot of people have been very complimentary of Ford sending an actual employee of the facility that builds these things here, so it’s pretty neat to be here with it.” These representatives also collected feedback about Ford’s brand position in the market and its product offerings. “It feels good to be here and I’m glad to hear the love everyone has for Ford,” said Pat Stoufer, a predelivery inspector at KCAP. “I’ve had people saying to me that they usually buy other brands, but this product display has people wanting to change their minds.” Stoufer said this kind of opportunity for employees to represent the products they build makes her feel like she’s part of something bigger. “I feel like I’m a part of Ford,” she said. “I don’t feel like I’m just an autoworker. This product is like my baby.” To see a video featuring UAWFord ambassadors at NAIAS, visit bit.ly/uawfordnaias UAW-Ford Ambassadors at NAIAS: Rappa Arrington – Chicago Assembly Gary Atkins – Flat Rock Assembly Andrew Balega – Kansas City Assembly Ryan Bussone – Louisville Assembly Angelique Bruening – Dearborn Truck Plant Jack Gorbett – Kentucky Truck Plant Albert Harris, Jr. – Michigan Assembly Joyce Hudgins – Dearborn Truck Plant John Kempf – Kansas City Assembly Steve Marrero – Kentucky Truck Plant Virginia McCullough – Livonia Transmission Justin Miller – Chicago Assembly Julie O’Malley – Michigan Assembly Raymon O’Neal – Flat Rock Assembly Alycia Price – Michigan ISA Patrick Riley – Louisville Assembly Carlos Rowan – Kentucky Truck Plant Pat Stoufer – Kansas City Assembly Barry Tombrella – Michigan ISA Shelley Wilkinson – Livonia Transmission Nichole Wood – Chicago Assembly Pat Stoufer of Kansas City Assembly greets guests at NAIAS. All-new Ford F-150 Raptor Supercrew and Raptor SuperCab January/February 2016 | 9 From the Plants 1 millionth 6R transmission marks LTP milestone MAP employees give back to community Livonia Transmission Plant (LTP) reached an alltime-high milestone in November after the 1 millionth 6R transmission of the calendar year rolled off the line. 2016 is set up to be an even stronger year with 1.2 million transmissions expected to satisfy the plant’s customer requirements, according to Plant Manager Bob Groden. The highest volume year-to-date for the plant was in 2014, when 920,000 transmissions were built. “Everyone involved in 6R should be very proud of this accomplishment. It is not just an assembly line accomplishment. The machining lines, the main control room, maintenance, MP&L, quality and all support organizations had a hand in making this volume and should be proud of Livonia’s performance,” said Curt Zeese, 6R Transmission area manager for LTP. Giving back to the community has been a long-time tradition at Michigan Assembly Plant (MAP). Three Skilled Trades employees from ISA Stamping organized a Christmas luncheon to do just that. Dave Hellman, Rhonda Ford and Nick Karpowitsch decided that people could either bring in a dish to pass or donate $10 to charity. The lunch raised $200 with all proceeds donated to the Wayne Goodfellows. The Wayne/Westland fire department showed up at the Stamping site in a fire truck to collect the donation. The Go Further attitude of the ISA Skilled Trades Team is another example of the compassion MAP employees have for the community. –Sal Giacona –Ryan Vetter OAC employee makes little girl’s Christmas wish a reality LEP team recognized for identifying, resolving quality issue Nano Engine Assembly Team 9 was recognized for outstanding teamwork for identifying and resolving a quality issue. Team members Don Clay, Wayne Smith, Travis Bolen, Carri Roeder, Scott Cottrell, Dave Bradford, Faith Shine, Robert Holiday, Kayla White, Brett Nicoll, Kyle Metzger, Favian Routson and Brandon Stephens are supervised by Chris Odenweller and were submitted for nomination by Team Leader Tammy Zerante. Operators began hearing an abnormal cracking sound while running down the EVR V bolt. An engine was sent for evaluation where it was found that the cam cover was cracked due to a supplier quality defect. Had it not been for the team’s attention to detail, this issue could have escaped the plant and resulted in an oil leak and an unsatisfied customer. Thanks to Team 9, LEP’s reputation for building quality engines customers can rely upon is intact. –Cindy Wood 10 | January/February 2016 Mike Boudreau, End-of-Line driver at Oakville Assembly Complex (OAC), was reading the Toronto Sun when he came upon the story of a little girl, Safyre Terry, who lost her family in a house fire and was herself injured and in recovery. Safyre had one wish for Christmas – to fill her tree with Christmas cards. Boudreau immediately knew that he wanted to help make Safyre’s Christmas wish come true. Boudreau bought Christmas cards and clipped the newspaper article. He set up a box with the blank holiday cards beside his workstation and pasted the news article nearby. He asked his colleagues to write a special Christmas message on a card to Safyre. Boudreau soon had people from all over the plant coming to him to help make her wish come true. He collected the cards and mailed them to Safyre and her extended family just in time for Christmas. –Allison Calcutt Refer a friend. Be rewarded. Verdun, 83, celebrated his 60th anniversary Dec. 19, 2015. He currently runs the Rotunda Center shipping and receiving dock. Verdun was employed by KaiserFrazer at Willow Run before being drafted toward the end of the Korean War. In the two years he was away, General Motors had taken over the facility. “When I got out of the Army in November 1954, I was a person that wanted to get back to work,” he said, “but things were kind of tough back in them times.” Verdun was unable to get a position with GM because of a curvature in his spine that was brought up during his physical. “They asked if I have any back trouble,” he said. “I said, ‘Yeah, well, I had a little back trouble,’ and just like that, that did it back in that time. I was turned away and that was it, they caught me! I was trapped.” Verdun later turned himself away from another potential employer – Chrysler – because the feel wasn’t quite right. “When I got to that building, I sat in my car, nobody but me. I couldn’t get out of the car to get into that employment office. It didn’t seem like the company I wanted to get with.” Verdun finally applied at Ford following a tip from a friend – and the good news arrived while he was working on a speedy wash rack in Inkster. “The man that I saw in the employment office out here at the engineering center was bringing his car through one day, and he saw me and told me that by December, they’d probably have something going. Eventually, I got that call.” As of Dec. 19, 1955, Verdun was officially employed by Ford Motor Company, and he doesn’t see himself retiring anytime soon. “I’m 83 years young now. I’m sure I will be working longer yet. I do know one thing: When you stop working, it’s going to be a big change. I don’t want to retire right now unless somebody makes me.” – Lawrence ‘Deke’ Verdun “I’m 83 years young now,” he said. “I’m sure I will be working longer yet. I do know one thing: When you stop working, it’s going to be a big change. I don’t want to retire right now unless somebody makes me.” Verdun shared this advice for new employees hoping for similar longevity with Ford: “Do a good job,” he said. “Don’t fight the job you’re given, and don’t try to find something really easy. If you don’t have the job you want, then get a better job, but work steady and stay out of trouble.” Verdun’s reflection of the past 60 years speaks volumes about his optimistic outlook and the pride he takes in his time at Ford. “I don’t really regret at all that I kept working,” he said. “There’s no aches, and there’s no regret. I can look back in the past, but I like to think the best thing’s yet to come.” January/February 2016 | 15 Back Page Ford Explorer makes dramatic return to TV on ‘The X-Files’ Ford Explorer fans should be on the lookout for more than a UFO sighting now that the acclaimed pop culture phenomenon “The X-Files” has returned to television. Along with the appearance of Explorer, an Escape, Mustang and black Taurus will be featured throughout the season as well. Both Ford GTs suffered gearbox issues that quickly set them too far behind to catch up. The news was better for the twocar EcoBoost-powered Prototype team until the No. 02 Target/Claritin Riley was sidelined twice with brake problems in the overnight hours. A third brake issue put the No. 02 into the tire wall with just 2 hours, 40 minutes to go with Kyle Larson behind the wheel. Meanwhile, the No. 01 Claritin/Target Riley remained on the lead lap until early Sunday morning until it was sent to the garage for a quick check-up with five hours to go before returning to the track four laps down.
