17' MULTI-FUNCTION LADDER 5.18m ÉCHELLE MULTIFONCTIONNELLE Operating and Safety MANUAL Manuel d’utilisation et de sécurité Model / modÈle : 1gtbl171blk 135 kg (300 lbs), DUTY RATING: Type 1A CHARGE DE SERVICE : CATÉGORIE 1A , 135 kg (300 lb) 1. TrueBalance Multi-use 4 in 1 Ladder With the convenient True Balance multi-use ladder, you get 4 ladders in 1! It’s good for any job. The adjustable hinges allow the ladder to be used in four configurations, as a 2-sided step ladder, extension ladder, multi-height scaffolding and as a stairway ladder, shown in the figures below. The adjustable outer sliding sections and locking tabs allow for height adjustments in one-foot increments on either section of the ladder. Step Ladder Extension Stairway Scaffold Not exactly as shown. DANGER Failure to read and follow all instructions on the ladder, including those under the steps, may result in injuries or death. Save these instructions for future use. WARNING! Scaffold configuration must be used with the static hinge attachment only! WARNING! The use of all protection equipment is ALWAYS recommended. Safety codes require guardrails and toe boards on ALL open sides when the platform height is 3m (10 ft.) or more, and may be required at lower heights, depending on the application and local jurisdiction. Check applicable ANSI, OSHA, State and Local codes for specific requirements. 2 2. Adjustable Hinges The ladder has two adjustable hinges, located at the top of the ladder in the storage position. Adjustable Hinge Operation Red Showing No Red Showing Figure A - Unlocked Figure B - Locked 1. To Unlock Press both palm buttons fully inward to release the hinge and allow the ladder to be repositioned. When the hinge is unlocked you will see red (Figure A). 2. To Lock Position ladder in either an open (use) or closed (storage) position (Figures 3, 4 and 5). Fully engage both hinges in the locked positions, as indicated in Figure B. DANGER! CAUTION/DANGER: Hinges are NOT fully locked if you see red on the centre post between locking pins. Make sure the hinges are fully seated (no red showing) prior to use. Failure to do so may result in death or injury. DANGER! All locking mechanisms must be engaged before using the ladder. The hinges are fully locked when no red is showing. DANGER! DO NOT STAND ON LADDER WHEN ADJUSTING HINGE OR PUSHING IN THE PALM BUTTON. Note: If there is any pressure on the hinge pins, the hinge will be difficult to unlock. To relieve any pressure, move one half of the ladder to take the stress off the hinge pins and align holes on the hinge. The hinge pins move freely in and out when stress is relieved. Note: Do not force the hinge with any tools. Permanent damage to the hinge mechanism may occur. Only light pressure is required to unlock when holes are properly aligned. 3 2. Adjustable Hinges (continued) The hinges adjust to 3 locked positions: Figure C - Storage Figure D - Step, Trestle, or Stairway Figure E - Extension Unlocked Locked Figure F - Locking Tabs 3. Locking TabS 1. To Lock / Unlock To unlock tabs, pull locking tab out and twist to adjust. To lock tabs, insert locking tabs completely into side hole before use. Figure G - Locked DANGER! Extension Ladder Mode Set-up and Height Adjustment From the stored position (Figure I), unlock both adjustable hinges by pressing the palm buttons fully inward, as indicated in Figure 1. Pull the two halves apart until the pins on both hinges snap into place and securely lock (Figure J). Push the palm buttons fully inward again and rotate one-half of the ladder out to the extension position until the hinges snap into place and lock securely (Figure K). Climb from front only Figure I - Storage Figure J - Step, Trestle, or Stairway Figure K - Extension If more height is desired, unlock the locking tabs and extend the upper section of the outer ladder until you reach the desired height. Securely lock the locking tabs into the rung holes. If more height is desired, repeat process on the lower section of the ladder. To store the ladder from its extension position, reverse the above instruction, starting with the lower section of the ladder. DANGER! ALL LOCKING MECHANISMS MUST BE ENGAGED BEFORE USING LADDER. DANGER! ONLY CLIMB THE FRONT OF THE LADDER IN THE EXTENSION MODE AS INDICATED IN FIGURE K. WARNING! Do not adjust the outer ladder or locking tabs without secure hold of the inner ladder. WARNING! Keep all body parts clear of sliding steps and rungs during adjustment. 5 5. Step ladder Mode Set-up and Height Adjustment From the stored position, (Figure L), unlock both adjustable hinges by pressing the palm buttons fully inward, as indicated in Figure A. Pull the two halves apart until the pins on both hinges snap into place and securely lock (Figure B and M). To adjust the height of the ladder when it is in the step ladder mode, pull the locking tabs out of the rung holes and twist on one sliding section of the ladder to unlock. Rest both locking tabs on the side of the outer ladder (Figure F). Firmly grasp the inner ladder section and carefully adjust the outer rail up or down. Securely lock both locking tabs into the rung holes at the desired height (Figure G). Repeat the above process to adjust the same height on the other half of the ladder. Figure L - Storage Position To return the ladder to its storage position, reverse the above instructions. Figure M - Step Ladder Position DANGER! ALL LOCKING MECHANISMS MUST BE ENGAGED BEFORE USING LADDER. WARNING! Do not adjust the outer ladder or locking tabs without a secure hold of the inner ladder. WARNING! Open the inner ladder assembly to the step ladder (A-Frame) position by pressing the palm buttons fully inward. Rotate the ladder out until the pins on both hinges snap into place and securely lock. Note: This is the first of two trestles needed to use in the scaffold mode. Do not use the ladder section without a flared base as a step ladder or extension ladder. Figure N To construct the second trestle, take one of the outer ladder sections that was removed in the previous step and lay it flat with its rungs facing downward. Place the remaining outer ladder section on top of the first with its rungs facing downward. Turn the rail locks on the bottom ladder section to align and connect with the rail lock holes of the top ladder section as shown in Figure N. Stand up the two connected ladder sections, pulling the two sections away from each other at the bottom until the hinge locks click into the locked position (see Figure O). Position the trestles as needed. Use an appropriate decorator or scaffold plank at the desired working height. Make sure any board you use is strong enough to support you and your equipment. Do not use split, broken or partial-cut wood as scaffolding. Too much board deflection or bowing may result in serious injury (Figure P). Figure O Figure P DANGER! DANGER! Maintenance To ensure smooth operation, lubricate the mechanical hinges and locking tabs with light lubricant every 6 months and prior to long-term storage. This should be performed more often if use dictates, and under extreme weather conditions (WD40 works well). Always store the ladder in a dry location. Keep rails clean so that the inner ladder will slide easily. Keep hinge mechanism free of dirt, salt spray, paint, or other contaminants that could prevent proper operation. Replace inner and outer feet as required to ensure safety. To order, call 1-800-459-4409. Check all components to be sure they operate correctly. Replace labels with label kit when labels become obscure, defaced, missing or difficult to read. To order, call 1-800-459-4409. 9.
