August 2009 Circle of Friends
Circle of Friends Information for our closest supporters Volume 2, Issue 2 Newsletter Date August 2009 Inside: The Big Back Yard Project 1 Shelter Renovations 2 Shelter Begins the End of Abuse Donor List 3 Shelter Renovations 7 Why a Big Backyard In the process of expanding the emergency shelter , we lost our play space. However, during the course of the expansion six lots became available adjacent to our shelter facility. We believe that a safe and beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors and learn about nature is restorative for both mothers and children. We shelter about 300 women and 300 children each year. We will also invite supervised children from nearby groups, most of which are living in very low income families. Vision for the Nature Learning Center Materials will be natural or simulate natural materials. • The garden will be designed so that kids can explore, create and learn and mothers can relax. • There will be areas for climbing, crawling, working with messy materials, riding toys or bikes, making music, performing, art projects etc. • Plantings will be identified and will be hardy regional species. • A rain garden will collect water from nearby asphalt run-off. • • Children become caretakers of the earth/ planet by learning the value of trees, water conservation, growing your own food and recycling. We will seek connections with organizations whose mission is natural conservation and teaching for on-going educational programs for children and their parents. We (SafeNet volunteers) will teach recycling and composting. Page 2 Circle of Friends Without our donors, all of this would not have been possible. Shelter kitchen Before renovations Shelter kitchen After renovations The renovations doubled the size of the shelter kitchen. All stainless steel was utilized for durability. The kitchen is now a bright, beautiful, sunny place to be. It’s amazing how much counseling happens around the table. Shelter Begins the End of Abuse Lead Gift Susan H. Volume Page 7 The Quiet Room Shelter can be a hectic, noisy environment. We felt that it was important to have a quiet room where people can go to find their peace, pray, read, study or hold support groups. The art that is pictured in the photos is on a 3 year loan from the Erie Art Museum. The Quiet Room is media free and very peaceful. Need help? The SafeNet Hotline 814 454-8161 24/7 Beauty abounds, inside and out. "SHELTER BEGINS THE END OF ABUSE" Safe Confidential SafeNet Center P. O. Box 1436 NONPROFIT ORG. U. S.
