AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND ANZ BLOODSTOCK NEWS Sunday, May 8th 2011 www.anzbloodstocknews.com KINGDOM CONQUERS THE COAST 23 FOR LONHRO English import remains unbeaten in Australia after Hollindale make his challenge. Ridden with great confidence by Nash Rawiller, Kingdom Of Fife lengthened his stride when asked and he made up the four lengths needed to reach the lead, striking the front inside the final 200 metres and then go clear. Fellow import Glass Harmonium (Ire) (Verglas) was behind Kingdom Of Fife at halfway and tracked him into the race, coming with a sustained run to challenge, getting to within a long-neck at the finish in a very pleasing Australian debut. Scenic Shot (Scenic) was another to run Kingdom Of Fife Sportpix on solidly in the straight and he too was closing to within a long-neck of Glass My Kingdom Of Fife (GB) (Kingmambo) Harmonium widest of all at the finish to continued his dream start to an take third. Australian racing career by making it three wins from as many starts with a Winning trainer Chis Waller praised his gritty performance to land yesterday’s horse as well as the ride from Rawiller. $300,000 A D Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, “He loves Australia that’s for sure and he 1800m) at the Gold Coast, writes Darryl has reason to, it is a lovely place with Sherer. All three of his Australian wins great racing, he has done a great job and have been at Group level and Kingdom Of it was a great ride by Nash Rawiller and it Fife showed yesterday he has substance is just a dream horse, it has great owners as well as style. and we will live the dream with them.” Having settled in fourth one out one That Kingdom Of Fife has proved back, Kingdom Of Fife crept closer something of a revelation this preparation after passing the 600 metre mark and is something Waller is happy to admit to. was eased out wide into the straight to ADVERTISING. alice@anzbloodstocknews.com Tampiko (5 m Ancient Song, by Canny Lad) is the 23rd stakeswinner for Lonhro following her win in yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Cup (Listed, 1300m) at the Gold Coast. 4 FOR DOMESDAY, SNITZEL Second-crop sires Domesday (Red Ransom) and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) were both represented by new stakeswinners yesterday. Hot Snitzel (2 g Flames Of Paris, by Blushing Groom) came home clear at the end of the Ken Russell Memorial (Listed, 1200m) to become the fourth stakeswinner for Snitzel while Divorces (3 f Family Breakup, by Octagonal) became the fourth stakeswinner for Domesday when landing the Gold Bracelet (Listed, 1400m) at the Gold Coast. 13 FOR SHINKO Yesterday’s Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Kasumi (2 f Mistaurian, by Straight Strike) is the 13th stakeswinner fr Shinko King (Fairy King). 6th GROUP 1 WINNER FOR D’ORO Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) sired his sixth Group 1 winner when his daughter Plum Pretty (3 f Liszy, by A. P. Indy) won the Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f). ROSE ENTERED IN MM JUNE Yesterday’s Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m) Military Rose is entered as Lot 733 for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale to be held on the Gold Coast between 29 and 31 May. FIRST WINNER FOR HARD SPUN Hard Spun (Danzig) sired his first winner in the northern hemisphere from his first crop when his son Mabroor (2 c Mayfield, by Exploit) won a maiden at Haydock, UK over six furlongs. KY Derby Overnight The Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) will be run in the early hours of Sunday morning at Churchill Downs. The pre-post favourite and champion juvenile Uncle Mo has been scratched and will not take his place in the field. EDITORIAL. editor@anzbloodstocknews.com 2 Sunday, May 8th, 2011 “I’ll be perfectly honest, he didn’t show us a lot but we got him as fit as we could for his first race, we knew he was a happy horse, he had no problems and that is all you can do and he just does it on race day.” COVER STORY CONT. ANZ his rhythm and he was never going to get beat from that point.” Kingdom Of Fife (Kingmambo - Fairy Godmother, by Fairy King) has now won six of his 22 starts in Australia and England and earned the equivalent of $791,325. “Since his first win at 100-1 he hasn’t really changed, his work has been of a high standard, though I wouldn’t say exceptional but come race day he is just very professional, even today he put himself in a good spot, he got going early and stuck on well.” MILITARY ROSE BOUNCES BACK Having already won at Group 1 level in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2000 metres at Randwick, Waller confirmed that he will aim Kingdom Of Fife at the Doomben Cup (Gr 1) over 2020 metres on 21 May. Military Rose (General Nediym) returned to her home track to register her first win in more than 12 months with a strong performance in the $125,000 Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3) over 1200 metres. Winner of the Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) in 2010, Military Rose was able to dominate yesterday’s race from barrier two and she was always in control “We will take it one race at a time, as one of the owners said to me when I was trying to plot a path to the Doomben Cup, he said ‘he is a six-year-old gelding not a three-year-old colt’, so he is a racehorse and we will race him.” Winning jockey Nash Rawiller explained later that Kingdom Of Fife ‘was in the zone’ and that he was confident all the way. “He was very fresh today, obviously coming back in distance Chris didn’t want to have him to dour, he nearly got rid of me in the mounting yard and he was on his toes,” Rawiller said. “I knew the horse had good fitness, I was very happy with him going to the gates, he put himself in a lovely spot. The only concern was at the half mile when he was one off the fence and started to not handle the ground because it got really chopped up there so I came back out three or four deep and try to get him back in Quickly settling on the lead, Military Rose was first into the straight and she was strong all the way to the line, going clear 200 metres out and then staying on well to hold the challenge from Celtic Dancer (Choisir) who got to within half a length at the finish. “I’m rapt,” Heinrich said on Sky Racing afterwards. “She is back, I was a little bit worried about her five or six weeks ago when she was down in Sydney but I think she is the kind of filly if you let her lead, she doesn’t fight, she is comfortable, she doesn’t choke down and everything works out well for her and Dan rode her like that today and she is back. “She won the Group 2 after the Magic Millions, down in Sydney, and then she sort of had a few problems, she had a heart Group winning, dual Group One placed Two year old. Military Rose ANZ Sportpix arrhythmia in one of her runs in Melbourne and it is always a worry if they will come back and she had a long spell after that. opposition here. “You might question the opposition but he was classes and classes above them,” Ryan said later. “[She] Came back and at her first run she got beaten five lengths on a slow track, but not leading, we kept her down (in Sydney) for six or seven weeks and it kept raining and we kept scratching so we eventually brought her home and then this morning they said a slow six and I hoped it would pick up before the race but she handled it.” Ryan said that Hot Snitzel was still mentally immature but that the trip north might be the ‘making of him’. “I thought the trip away might help make him become a racehorse and if that performance is any indication it has.” Entered for Magic Millions National Sale on the Gold Coast in June, Military Rose (3 f General Nediym – Bella Maddelena, by Flying Spur) has now won six of her 11 starts and earned $1,626,900. SNITZEL STROLLS HOME Hot Snitzel looked a class above his rivals on paper beforehand in yesterday’s $100,000 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Listed, 1200m) and so it proved, the Gerald Ryan-trainee striding to the front before the home turn and then coming away under hands and heels to have a six and a half length advantage at the end of the 1200 metres. Double Impact (Mossman) came through between horses in the straight to take second place in front of Lady Mary (Dane Shadow). Hot Snitzel has shown plenty of ability as well as signs of waywardness in the early part of his career. He finished unplaced in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) but he was too good for the ADVERTISING. alice@anzbloodstocknews.com Ryan has ambitious plans for Hot Snitzel, who will now be aimed at the $150,000 Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at Doomben on 21 May and the $250,000 QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on 4 June. A $60,000 Melbourne Premier Yearling purchase by Triple Crown Syndications, Hot Snitzel (2 g Snitzel – Flames Of Paris, by Blushing Groom) has now won two of his six starts and earned $174,900. In winning he becomes the fourth stakeswinner for Snitzel, who Ryan trained to win the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m). DIVORCES SWOOPS TO CONQUER Divorces (Domesday) is headed towards the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) following a big win in the $125,000 Gold Coast Bracelet (Listed). The Darley-homebred swept home wide out in the straight, coming from well back to the turn to win going away at the end of the 1800 metres. Divorces had two and half-lengths to spare over In A Tangle (Bradbury’s Luck) at the finish with Surpassing (More Than EDITORIAL. editor@anzbloodstocknews.com Sunday, May 8th, 2011 Divorces Ready) a neck off in third. Snowden adopted a change in tactics for Divorces and instructed jockey Hugh Bowman to ride the filly quietly instead of her recent on-pace pattern. “She’s still a bit questionable over ground in my mind. I originally thought a mile would be as far she’d get,” Snowden said later. “She hit heavy tracks in Sydney and drew wide and we had to ride her forward but today when we switched her off she showed the turn of foot we knew she had when ridden patiently.” Snowden said Divorces would run next in the Doomben Roses (Gr 3) over 2020m in two weeks time but he still had reservations about her ability to relax well enough to get the 2400 metres in the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1) on 4 June. “We’ll assess again where were at with her after the Roses,” he said. “I’ve a question mark on her at the mile and a half but when fillies are going well you don’t stop them.” Divorces (3 f Domesday – Family Breakup, by Octagonal) becomes the fourth stakeswinner from the first-crop of her sire. After yesterday her record stands at two wins and five placings from 14 starts for earnings of $343,800. TAMPIKO TAKES CUP Tampiko (Lonhro) sprang a 20/1 upset in the Prime Ministers Cup (Listed) at the Gold Coast, edging out Eire Of Magic (Eire) ADVERTISING. alice@anzbloodstocknews.com 4 COVER STORY CONT. ANZ Sportpix by a nose with Fifteen Carat (Show A Heart) a neck away in third place in a driving finish at the end of 1300 metres. Given a patient ride from Chris Munce, Tampiko was allowed to settle well off the early speed and was kept out wide to the turn, making his challenge down the centre of the track. Eire Of Magic had come through along the inside in the straight to strike the front inside the final 100 metres but Tampiko was finding her stride and closing strongly with Fifteen Carat widest of all, the three horses going to the line spread across the track with Tampiko getting his nose in front where it counted. Australian-bred, Tampiko started her career in New Zealand before transferring to Australia where she is now prepared by Peter Moody, who watched the race on television at Flemington having been at Eagle farm first thing on Saturday morning to watch Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) gallop. “The funny thing was I thought I had held on, I thought I had the two horses around me beat, Thankgodyour’ehere and Fifteen Carat, I did see the second horse dash through quick but I thought I had enough momentum about to hold him off,” Munce said later. “I was wide, but there was plenty of speed in the race, mine was fit and we were doing plenty of work a long way from home and I sort of got washed out a bit wider than I wanted to be but she was fit, like (Peter Moody’s) always are and she out muscled them.” Tampiko (5 m Lonhro – Ancient Song, by Canny Lad) sold for EDITORIAL. editor@anzbloodstocknews.com 5 Sunday, May 8th, 2011 $500,000 as a yearling at the 2007 Easter Sale and has now won eight of her 23 starts and earned $254,128. In winning she becomes the 23rd stakeswinner for Lonhro and she is the fourth stakeswinner by Lonhro out of a Canny Lad mare following Renaissance, Territory, Celts and Clown Master. BEETHOG WEARS THE STOCKINGS Beethog (Shovhog) made nearly every step of the running to land yesterday’s $151,400 Silk Stocking (Listed) at the Gold Coast, holding off Casholet (Hussonet) in a driving finish to the 1200 metre sprint. Trained on the track by Les Kelly, Beethog is only small but she has plenty of heart and will now be aimed at the Stradbroke COVER STORY CONT. ANZ Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) according to her trainer. “From there (the outside draw) we had to go forward,” Kelly said, adding, “she’s just so small - but she’s pretty good. “She’s very hard to handle and I think that is why Greg (Ryan, senior part owner) gave her to me, it’s just great to win this race here on our home track - especially year to year. “She’s going to the Stradbroke,” Kelly confirmed. “She had a foot injury after she won the Guineas and she’s only had four starts since then.” Sold for 10,000 as a yearling at the 2008 Magic Millions National sale, Beethog (4 m Shovhog – Gypsy Ahlee, by Alquoz) has now won four of her 13 starts and earned $235,650. Flying the Flag for British Thoroughbreds Analysis: Kingdom Of Fife settled down in fourth one out one back, crept closer passing the 800m mark and was poised to challenge into the straight. Quickening up well, he ran on strongly to strike the front inside the final 200m and was strong to the line. Glass Harmonium was terrific on his Australian debut. Well back at halfway, he tracked Kingdom Of Fife into the race and was winding up wide out into the straight, closing out strongly to the line. Scenic Shot was near last at halfway and was being stoked along into the straight. He came widest of all with a sustained run to be closest at the finish. Heart Of Dreams settled fifth along the inside but then got shuffled back approaching the home turn as the field packed. He stayed on solidly along the inside in the straight. Shoot Out looked to have every chance. Towards the rear at halfway, he was poised to challenge into the straight but could only stay on one paced in the straight. He will be better over further. Triple Honour was always handy and he was ridden along to challenge into the straight, unable to quicken inside the final 200m. 1st dam: FAIRY GODMOTHER, by Fairy King. 2 wins at 1¼m, Newbury Ballymacoll Stud S., L, 2d Newmarket Earl of Sefton S., Gr.3. Double Impact was worse than midfield at halfway and still several lengths off the lead into the straight. He came through between horses to run into second place inside the final 100m. Lady Mary raced prominently all the way, in fifth place to the turn and then staying on solidly along the inside in the straight. Merryanna raced in sixth place early and was poised to challenge into the straight, chasing hard all the way to the line to be closest at the finish. 1st dam: FLAMES OF PARIS, by Blushing Groom.
