A brother-in-law of Trent Lott, the former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Scruggs made a fortune taking on mass tort lawsuits against “Big Tobacco” and the asbestos industries. He was hailed by Newsweek as a latter day Robin Hood, and portrayed in the movie, The Insider, as a dapper aviator-lawyer. Scruggs’ legal triumphs rewarded him lavishly, and his success emboldened both his career maneuvering and his influence in Southern politics--but at a terrible cost, culminating in his spectacular fall, when he was convicted for conspiring to bribe a Mississippi state judge. Here Mississippi is emblematic of the modern South, with its influx of new money and its rising professional class, including lawyers such as Scruggs, whose interests became inextricably entwined with state and national politics. Based on extensive interviews, transcripts, and FBI recordings never made public, The Fall of the House of Zeus exposes the dark side of Southern and Washington legal games and power politics: the swirl of fixed cases, blocked investigations, judicial tampering, and a zealous prosecution that would eventually ensnare not only Scruggs but his own son, Zach, in the midst of their struggle with insurance companies over Hurricane Katrina damages. In gripping detail, Curtis Wilkie crafts an authentic legal thriller propelled by a “welter of betrayals and personal hatreds,” providing large supporting parts for Trent Lott and Jim Biden, brother of then-Senator Joe, and cameos by John McCain, Al Gore, and other DC insiders and influence peddlers. Above all, we get to see how and why the mighty fail and fall, a story as gripping and timeless as a Greek tragedy. Limited Seating. Please call 662.494.6463 to reserve your seat at this event. Curtis Wilkie. Born in Greenville, Mississippi, Wilkie was educated in the public schools of Mississippi and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He served as reporter and editor on the staff of the Clarksdale Press Register 1963-69 in the Mississippi Delta at a time when the civil rights movement was at its height. He received a Congressional Fellowship from the American Political Science Association and worked on Capitol Hill 1969-71 as a legislative aide in the offices of Sen. Walter F. Mondale (D-Minn.) and Rep. John Brademas (D-Ind,). He served as reporter and editor on the staff of the News-Journal papers in Wilmington, Delaware, 1971-74. Wilkie joined the staff of the Boston Globe in 1975 and served as a national and foreign correspondent for that paper until retirement at the end of the 2000 presidential campaign. He covered eight presidential campaigns (seven for the Globe) and served as White House correspondent 1977-82. He also served as chief of the Globe’s Washington bureau. In 1984, Wilkie established the Globe’s Middle East bureau and lived in Jerusalem 1984-87. He covered numerous wars and conflicts overseas including 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon; terrorist bombings of US Marines in Beirut as well as siege of Yasser Arafat in Tripoli, Lebanon, in 1983; civil war in Lebanon throughout the 1980s; first Palestinian intifada, 1988-89; Romanian revolution 1989-90; first Gulf War 1991; civil war in Somalia, 1993. In 1993, Wilkie established Globe’s Southern bureau in New Orleans and covered regional and national affairs from there until retirement. Wilkie has written numerous articles for national magazines such as The Nation, The New Republic, Newsweek, Playboy, George, Washington Journalism Review. Many articles were published in the Boston Globe Magazine. He is the co-author, with the late Jim McDougal, of “Arkansas Mischief: Birth of a National Scandal” published by Henry Holt 1998; author of “Dixie: A Personal Odyssey Through Events That Shaped the Modern South” published by Scribner 2001; co-author, with six others, of “City Adrift: New Orleans Before and After Katrina” published by LSU Press 2007. He was a journalism professor in residence at Louisiana State University (2003). He was appointed to Kelly G. Cook chair in the department of journalism at the University of Mississippi (2004). Wilkie was given the Special Award for Excellence in Non-Fiction Writing by the Fellowship of Southern Writers (2005). Wilkie has served as visiting professor of journalism at the University of Mississippi since 2002. He was appointed to become the first Overby Fellow with the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at the University of Mississippi in 2007. A special congratulations goes out to the following Old Waverly competitors for participating in this year’s event. GLOW BALL TOURNAMENT Our annual glow ball tournament was held July 6th. A record 17 teams participated in this year’s event. The front nine holes of golf were played during the day. As night fell, we played five holes around the lake. The golf course was full of color with glow balls flying through the air and fairways lined with glow sticks like a runway. Make plans for next year’s glowball! It is one you will not forget! JASON SHARP Each time I see members swing the club, they are demonstrating hours and hours of hard work put into the sport they love. One thing is true, while you can buy many things, a good golf game is not one of them. Good golf requires honesty, grit, and discipline applied over an extended period of time. Presently, there is a lot of attention being put on the junior golf program. I think that is great. But you need to understand the truth of the matter. YOU are as big a part of the junior golf program as anyone else. Everything feeds on everything else. But let’s think back for a minute. In order to have a facility like Old Waverly, you must first have the Bryans’ inspiration to build it here in Mississippi. Then you must have golfers (like yourself ) who share in the passion of golf here in Mississippi. Next, you must have a host of golf professionals that brought the game along through the years. The Teaching Center was established in 2003, not by one or two people, but instead by hundreds of people that shared the same passion in golf. So, today, remember that you are making a difference. By sharing your passion of golf, you are building not only your own future in the game, but that of many, many more. Thank YOU! WEDNESDAY NIGHT SPECIAL Please come out and enjoy traditional Asian Cuisine each Wednesday night in the month of August. MESSAGE FROM WILKES July was a great month in Old Waverly’s history for Junior Golf. There were 246 juniors who played in tournaments and daily play. As we continue to build our junior program, the addition of the Fleishhacker Golf Cottage has been tremendous as it hosted 6 camps since May with one more planned for the summer. The juniors have been working hard and making progress! A special thanks to the counselors for their time and efforts to assist. We especially appreciate our members for their support of junior golf. Wednesday nights in August will feature an Asian entree, and the entree will be different every Wednesday night. During the week and weekend, Bubba serves some outstanding specials for evening dining. Tasty Tuesday and Date Night also showcase other dining specials. This month we have three weddings in the clubhouse, and we are honored that the brides have chosen Old Waverly as their venue. During these weddings, Murphy’s will be open for dining. Reservations are very important to assure a great dining experience. Thank you in advance for helping us. We are glad to welcome back Earl following his recent foot surgery. Earl has been at Old Waverly since August of 1993, and his recent absence was felt by everyone. Earl said he didn’t know just how important his feet were until he had to be off of them! Be sure and stop in Murphy’s to see him. There are only 29 days until NCAA football takes center stage! The first game is on Thursday, August 29th between North Carolina and South Carolina. We will have the game on all the televisions and hope you join us for kick-off. There can be some good weather in August, so make your plans to come out and enjoy all that Old Waverly offers! FLEISHHACKER GOLF COTTAGE We had 11 junior golfers stay in the Fleishhacker Golf Cottage during the month of July. These golfers came from Memphis, Birmingham, Gulfport, and Tupelo. Our next instructional opportunity is August 2-3. Young golfers are learning how to take a concept, build that skill, transfer that skill, and ultimately make that skill a habit. Much like the game of life, golf can be very challenging, especially when we encounter unexpected variables. Here junior golfers are learning how to deal with those variables by being objective, persistent, and patient. These traits will transfer to off course learning experiences. If you are interested in your junior golfer experiencing what the Fleishhacker Golf Cottage has to offer, email VJ or Tim. vj@troliogolf.com tyelverton2002@gmail.com Sincerely, Boyce Adams Chairman, Old Waverly Jr. Golf Foundation JUNIOR POINTS RACE 2013 has been a great year for our junior golfers! They have competed and are still competing in many tournaments throughout the year. Our juniors will be rewarded for their efforts on October 27th for their year-end golf tournament. This event will be a great way for the juniors to see how their efforts have paid off for their year of hard work and dedication to junior golf. Below are the points leaders for their age groups.
