Message from our President
and Chief Executive Officer
NDIS has remained on the national agenda as the future direction for
people with disabilities.
SRS supports the NDIS and looks forward to being part of the
revitalised future.
It’s that time of the year again when we stop and realise that another year has quickly concluded and we reflect on what
we achieved in the year.
At SRS it has been a very busy year with our key focus and energy directed towards 892-894 Fifteenth Street
accommodation complex project. SRS launched the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign to raise funds for the project, which proved
to be highly successful.
The momentum on Fifteenth Street took shape, with both stages 1 and 2 completed this financial year. While SRS felt
extremely disappointed that both State and Federal governments once again rejected our applications to fund this
innovative community project, SRS were very pleased to receive support from the business
community and the Ageing Carers Sunraysia Family Network - including the people we support and their
families.
Their wealth of knowledge and insight shared with SRS ensures SRS strategic plan is on track and focused in the right
direction. This level of support provided inspiration and motivation to complete the project, with SRS remaining
committed towards providing innovative accommodation and life training options in the future.
The first stage of Sunraysia Residential Services’ new $1.2 million complex in Fifteenth Street is now completed,
marking another innovative step forward. Comprising a large four bedroom home and two independent units, the
complex continues the precedent set by SRS’s existing premises in Fifteenth Street, allowing clients and their families
flexible accommodation options including ownership.
The large four bedroom home boasts a rare mix of specialised features and equipment for individualised care while
tasteful in design, dispelling the perception that disability facilities must look sterile and hospital-like. This was an
important consideration in the design process – while SRS is building for people with special needs, SRS wanted to
ensure that the complex looked like any other house on the street – blending in and homely.

A special thank you to BW&A National Building Consultants for their patience, keeping things moving forward and
attention to detail with project coordination – allowing the project to come in within budget and on time.

The SRS Board of Management have been absolutely marvellous throughout the year, ensuring SRS remains
not only a viable and competitive service, but a quality service with a focus on best outcomes for people with
disabilities. While utilities and living expenses have continued to spike, SRS have quickly adjusted overheads and
introduced energy efficient systems and maintenance. In doing so, this has enabled SRS to keep fees low, while budgeting
to reduce five program fees in the next financial year. These being: Home Care and Maintenance, Community Based
Supports, Children and Holiday Programs and transportation.
SRS Transportation Program has been expanded to address personalised needs for people to enjoy community access.
At the respite, accommodation and training facilities, SRS vehicles are available for use, and outings are encouraged. Our
fleet has increased this year to accommodate the demand, while we have reduced the cost of transportation. We once
again sincerely thank Davison Motor Group for their ongoing commitment and
generosity providing SRS vehicles at no cost to help make this all happen.
The revamping of the SRS Management Team has been meticulous and selective with recruitment ensuring all
personal are focused on our vision and values with motivation to make things happen. Thank you to the team of Managers,
Coordinators, Administrators and Active Support Assistants for your professionalism and dedication. We are pleased to
report that during this financial year the Management team successfully handled competitive business demands, while
retaining the same dynamic team over the past twelve months.
The Department of Human Serivces reconfigured the regions which resulted in the Loddon Mallee disolving.
SRS is now part of the new Northern Division known as the Mallee region.

SRS welcomes the progressive changes as a positive outcome for our serivces in Sunraysia.

The new look inclusive DHS management structure is like a breath of fresh air and we thank
the department of human services for the support and direction provided to SRS during the
year.
Over the past ten years, SRS has worked in partnership with Kirinari Community Services to deliver services in
Far South West NSW. SRS received an unexpected phone call early in May, announcing that this relationship was no
longer government approved. SRS would like to thank Kirinari for the last ten years working together to
provide services in NSW.
We would like to also thank the Ouyen based rural and remote service lead by John Steel for excellence in
service provision to the rural and remote communities. John has continued to be creative, providing innovative solutions
that have made a great difference to the people who reside in these rural communities.
During the year, SRS welcomed two new board members - Mark Alford and Stephen Parr - we look forward to
their long association with SRS. Our board members are all volunteers, who are not remunerated; therefore SRS are ever so
grateful for the ongoing support and time given to SRS. Having been a board member, I can
personally say that SRS have one of the best governance boards I have experienced in terms of understanding their roles
and responsibilities and supporting me in my role. Thank you to Don Seward and the members for the extra support
and encouragement which helps me rise above in the face of disillusion when expectations are greater than possible to
achieve.

On behalf of SRS it is with great excitement and my pleasure to announce the commencement of Benetook
Chooks project. A project which for the past ten years has underpinned our future strategic plan, waiting for
the right moment to commence. The emphasis of this project is the development of new respite day
programs that provide training towards employment and meaningful activities for people with disabilities in
the Mallee region.
The exciting new disability training and respite day program will focus on the creation and operation of
a hobby farm, with tourism potential. In conjunction with Benetook Chooks, the current SRS wood work
restoration and creation program incorporating art and craft programs will compliment this project and be
known as Cottage Industries.
The long term goals of this project will be in accordance with the principles of Social Enterprise to provide
revenue to build community accommodation to support families and people with disabilities. Since 1976,
SRS have specialised in designing and constructing innovative accommodation and client services with a
focus on outcomes for people with disabilities and their families.
We welcome you all to come and visit us at the farm, become a sponsor of a chook and/or become a
volunteer in this new, long awaited unique project.

completion, marking another innovative step forward for Sunraysia Residential Services.
Comprising a large four bedroom home and two independent units, the complex continues the

The new complex allows some of the clients to live independently with the comfort of knowing there
is professional care, including a full-time live-in volunteer, just metres away in the large four bedroom
home.
The large four bedroom home boasts a rare mix of specialised features and equipment for individualised
care while tastefully design, dispelling the perception that disability facilities must look sterile and
hospital-like.
The board of management and SRS fundraising committee have worked incredibly hard to source the
funding required to achieve this outcome, and the families that have nominated to be part of the project
are really excited.

PROGRAM SERVICES
TICA, Respite at John’s street, View court and our independent accommodation homes continue providing
innovative outcomes for the people we support. During the year we have seen many movements which
have all created experiences towards finding the best fit for all taking into consideration the level of support
and the environmental factors. Accommodation remains our key area of business and we strive to provide
quality homes. During this year respite at John’s street underwent further upgrades to bedrooms, the back
yard and the furniture. The swimming pool and multipurpose back yard facility ensure that respite at Johns
street is active and a fun time. Short stay and after school support has continued to increase in numbers
which has been achieved by the flexibility of service provision.
At View court we are pleased to report this property has been approved to be fitted with DHS fire safety
equipment and the extension plans will be commenced in the new financial year.
On behalf of the team at SRS we would like to thank the case managers at Bendigo Health Group and the
Department of Human services for not only their support and direction but their professional friendship.

Thank you to all the dedicated active support assistants employed with SRS. We are pleased to report that our retention
rates reflect stability and consistency in service provision.
We have continued to provide onsite training and traineeships in conjunction with Sunraysia Institute of TAFE to uphold
our commitment of a minimum standard qualification at a Certificate IV level.

SRS in partnership with Sunraysia Institute of TAFE continue with their commitment to ensure the
minimum standard qualification is at Certificate IV level. We are pleased to report that every employee who commences
at SRS is given excellent opportunities to achieve higher qualifications.
SRS training has equipped staff with excellent skills and knowledge, giving them the opportunity to seek higher roles of

The annual reflection day held at the
Inlander Resort provided a great venue to
brain storm Benetook Chooks while
reaffirming our vision, mission and values.
OUR STAFF - STATISTICS
Over the past thirty six years recruiting new staff has been relatively easy at SRS. A large number of new
young employees have become available each year and, by and large, we have been able to provide career
opportunities to many young people. We have noticed a trend in the past few years of far fewer young
people entering the workforce than in the ‘baby boomers’ time. SRS stability relies on the retention of
workers and we applaud our older employees for their loyalty to SRS.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS
Paul Sabo has been an employee of SRS for over ten years. SRS provided Paul with training and
employment modified to suit his unique skills at a time when direction was required for Paul to
realize his potential.

FUNDRAISING
Annual Pizza cafe Fundraising Event
13th November 2012
SRS held its annual fundraiser on November 13 at the Pizza Café on the Grand, and just like previous
years it’s turned out to be our most successful ever, raising $6,974 to put towards the continued
development of our new units on Fifteenth Street!
The new units are coming along fantastic and will go a long way to addressing the lack of supported
accommodation in Sunraysia for people with disabilities.
We’d like to thank Joseph Carrazza and the team at the Pizza Café at the Grand for their continued
support and of course their amazing dishes. The Pizza Café also donated to the cause themselves
which is very much appreciated and has been a great help. Thanks to all who attended.

FUNDRAISING
Our social and recreational activities would
not have been as successful if it we didn’t have
transport available to assist people to get out and
about in the community. SRS thanks Garry Davison
and his team for providing SRS with a loan car to
help the people we support to attend community
and social events.
SRS would like to thank and acknowledge the
Percy Baxter Charitable Trust for the very
generous grant of $78,000 given for 892-894
Community Living Project.
Thank you to Bunnings for the allocation
of the Sausage Sizzle on Saturday March
the 16th, 2013. SRS really appreciated the
opprortunity to fundraise and be affliated
with the Bunnnings Brand.
A big thank you to our ongoing supporter Harvey
Norman who donated a coffee machine for our
“Buy a Brick” Campaign. The winner will be
announced in mid Novemeber 2013.
Mildura City Soccer Club celebrated their
40 year Anniversary this year and they
chose SRS as the recipient of $500 to go
towards the Benetook Chooks hobby
farm.
Our good friends at

were very kind in
donating $1000 towards
our Community Liviing
Project. We look
forward to getting our
dancing shoes on ready
for next year.
