The schedule is brutal, but the roster is loaded with solid veterans who are primed for the NFL and talented newcomers will help the Tide roll all the way to Tampa! FLORIDA STATE: The Seminoles return 17 starters and are loaded on both sides of the ball. Yes, the schedule is tough early, but if they are undefeated on November 1st and new quarterback Deondre Francois becomes the quarterback we think he has the talent to be, FSU is a cinch for the playoffs. OKLAHOMA: With the nation’s best defense and one of the top offenses, the Sooners will be back in the playoffs again this season. The early part of the schedule is not easy and will tell the story as they open with Houston before tangling with Ohio State, TCU and Texas in the first 5 games of the season! STANFORD: The Cardinals have one of the toughest schedules in the nation, but they also have more talent than any other Pac-12 team -- including a Heisman favorite -- and by December will be even better than last year’s Rose Bowl team that crushed a previously undefeated Iowa team, 45-16. OHIO STATE: How can Ohio St. be in the Top 10 after graduating a strong senior class and then losing 9 underclassmen to the NFL? Because Urban Meyer has built a juggernaut. While inexperienced, OSU will still beat Michigan at home to ruin the Wolverines season, but miss out on the playoffs. LSU: Les Miles is back at LSU to coach one of the nation’s best defenses and an offense that will scored points in bunches. This is the most experienced team in the SEC and may have the best running back in the country, but will still have a loss to Alabama keeping them out of the playoffs! OREGON: Many are calling for a down season for the Ducks, but we really like the new talent that is coming to replace departed starters and foresee another double-digit win total in Eugene. Unfortunately for Oregon, it plays in the Pac-12 and that means a loss to Stanford prevents a playoff bid. CLEMSON: The national championship runner-up will still have an explosive offense led by the best QB in the country and a very manageable schedule, but there are once again questions on defense with just four staters coming back. A loss at FSU will cost Clemson a return to the playoffs. GEORGIA: You won’t find Georgia in anybody else’s Top 10, but keep in mind we were also the only publication to have Oklahoma winning the Big 12 and in the playoffs last year. This year it’s the Dawgs who surprise and win the SEC East, go to another big Bowl game and finish in the Top 10. NOTRE DAME: The Irish are loaded with experienced talent on both sides of the ball and while the schedule is tough, Notre Dame faces all of its toughest opponents in South Bend. They could be favored in their first 11 games before a showdown with Southern Cal that will crush their season. Derrick Henry is off to the NFL, but Damien Harris and Bo Scarborough are super talents and the receiving corps and offensive line will be even better than last year. The schedule is brutal with an opening game against Southern Cal and road games at Ole Miss, much-improved Tennessee and LSU, but once again we expect the Crimson Tide to take home the title! Les Miles survived the “Attack of the Rogue Boosters” in Baton Rouge and returns a top 5 team that will be led by Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette. The defense will be one of the nation’s best under new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda and the offense is loaded. The major concern for LSU, as usual, is at quarterback. Purdue transfer Danny Etling looked good in the spring, but we expect incumbent QB Brandon Harris to once again be the starter. If he can just be good, the Tigers will be great. If he turns the ball over or is just average, the Tigers will be average and that will be bad news for Les as the climate at LSU is still toxic and he and AD Joe Alleva hate each other...It’s put up or shut up time for Tennessee and fourth-year Head Coach Butch Jones. The Vols return almost everyone on both sides of the ball and they are quality, experienced players. Tennessee hired former Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop to shore up a defense that had trouble stopping people in the fourth quarter last year. Shoop’s defenses the last two years were ranked No. 2 and No. 14 in the nation in total defense and that’s why the Vols made him their highest paid assistant coach ever at $1.2 million a year. Tennessee will be heavily favored to win the SEC East. Those loses were to No. 2 Clemson by 2 and No. 3 Stanford by 2 before getting blown out in the Fiesta Bowl by Ohio State. As a result of last year’s injuries, Notre Dame returns a lot of experienced talent on both sides of the ball and that depth has already been tested with the sad news that wide receiver Corey Robinson, the son of NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson, will not play his senior season for the Fighting Irish because of concerns over repeated concussions. COLLEGE PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2016 Number of great off-season changes to football coverage at ESPN. Gone are boorish Ray Lewis, megalomaniac Cris “Find a Fall Guy” Carter, Keyshwan Johnson and the almost unintelligible Randy Moss. Although we were a fan of his on-air work, Mike Tirico’s departure to NBC was applauded by the female staff at ESPN that he has sexually harassed and stalked over the years. Tirico’s replacement on Monday Night Football will be the outstanding all sports broadcaster Sean McDonough...Great to hear that The Terminator, Pittsburgh running back James Conner has returned to practice after being diagnosed with cancer last December. Connor was the ACC player of the year in 2014 and is expected to be ready to play this fall for the Panthers...Bad luck for Illinois wide receiver Mike Dudek who caught 76 passes for 1,038 yards and six touchdowns as a true freshman in 2014. He missed 2015 because of a torn right ACL and then torn his ACL again in spring practice and will miss the upcoming season. Purdue running back D.J. Knox and USC defensive lineman Kenny Bigelow Jr. also suffered ACL injuries that will force them to miss the upcoming season while fellow Trojan linebacker Scott Felix was dismissed from the team for getting caught taking steroids.
