As friends and alumni of North Idaho College, you play an extremely important role in the future of NIC. You understand that NIC makes an important contribution to the social, cultural, and economic quality of life throughout our region. And, like public institutions everywhere, NIC must look beyond its traditional sources of support. Property taxes, state appropriations, and student tuition must be supplemented with private donations if the college is to maintain the level of educational excellence the people of North Idaho deserve. Please let us know if you find this report valuable and how we might improve it. Complete our brief survey at www.nic.edu/foundation by December 31, 2007, and you will be entered to win two great prizes! See the back cover for details. Warmest Regards, Rayelle Anderson, CFRE Executive Director North Idaho College Foundation Sara Fladeland Coordinator North Idaho College Alumni Relations College prepares for 75th anniversary local school district, women’s groups, numerous civic organizations, and the Coeur d’Alene Press, the college opened its doors in the fall of 1933. With 55 eager students, paying $35 a semester for tuition, the seed for higher education opportunities in North Idaho was firmly planted. With endorsements by businesses, the NIC’s history will soon be unveiled in a new book titled “The Gathering Place: A History of North Idaho College.” The book will be available in the fall of 2008 as part of NIC’s 75th Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Stay tuned for more community-wide birthday celebration details! “NIC was the most affordable option for me. Most people think that there’s nothing to do at a community college, but that’s not true of NIC. There’s intramural sports, an outdoor recreation program, collegiate sports, and an activities center with shuffleboard, pool and a plasma TV. It’s not just an education here, it feels like home.” – Nate Knaggs, 2007-2008 general studies major You have the power to change a life… NIC Foundation Honor Roll of Contributors Named Funds and Scholarships The following scholarships and funds have been established to benefit deserving students and specific areas of need. The scholarships were made possible through contributions from literally hundreds of donors. “Scholarships provide help and hope for students who might not otherwise be able to pursue their dreams,” said NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson. “Scholarships are a solid investment and provide opportunities and encouragement for those fortunate enough to be assisted by a scholarship award.” The NIC Foundation awarded 19 grants for a total of $50,707 in 2006-07 through the NIC Foundation Grant Program, which is funded by annual donations and Really BIG Raffle proceeds. Since 1994, the NIC Foundation has awarded 149 grants totaling $668,887 to faculty, staff, and student groups at NIC through the grant program. Coeur d’Alene Art Association Board Member Chelsea Cordova stands with North Idaho College fine arts student Laura James. James was the recipient of the 2006-07 Coeur d’Alene Art Association Scholarship. Each November, the NIC Foundation brings together donors and the many deserving students who benefit from their philanthropy for the annual Fall Scholarship Celebration as a way for both groups to learn more about each other. A donor can establish a new scholarship or contribute to an existing scholarship In addition, the NIC Foundation awarded numerous awards to exceptional NIC staff and faculty at the annual employee awards ceremony last spring. fund. The Foundation works with each donor to set up the criteria for which the scholarship is distributed. It helps me support my family while I go to school and helps decrease the amount of loans, which directly influences how much education I can attain. Mostly it just means I’m on the right track to my future.” –Shannon Duncan, nursing graduate and recipient of the 2006-2007 Doug & Jan Bell Memorial and the Roy & Leona Nelson Foundation Scholarships Page 3 10/21/07 11:09:31 AM NIC Foundation and Alumni Year in Review NIC nursing students establish College supporter donates portion of scholarship in honor of fellow estate to NIC student’s daughter Elisabeth Scates, who passed away in January 2007, cared about her community and North Idaho College. She believed in education and was committed to giving—both in life and in death. Through her will, Elisabeth made arrangements to contribute $12,000 to benefit the John Dunlop Memorial Scholarship, which she and her husband of 22 years, retired dentist Robert (Bob) Scates, established in 2003 in memory of Elisabeth’s son John Dunlop. Dunlop, who attended NIC in 1968-1969, died at a young age and Elisabeth wanted to ensure he was remembered through a fund to help NIC students. “This scholarship fund is a wonderful example of how a loved one’s memory can live on forever through charitable giving,” said NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson. “NIC students will continue to reap the rewards of the Scates’ philanthropy for years to come.” To learn more about establishing a named fund or making North Idaho College part of your estate plan, call the NIC Foundation at 208.769.5978. It helps me support my family while I go to school and helps decrease the amount of loans, which directly influences how much education I can attain. Mostly it just means I’m on the right track to my future.” –Shannon Duncan, nursing graduate and recipient of the 2006-2007 Doug & Jan Bell Memorial and the Roy & Leona Nelson Foundation Scholarships Page 3 10/21/07 11:09:31 AM NIC Foundation and Alumni Year in Review NIC Foundation Board of Directors The NIC Foundation Board of Directors is made up of community volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to help meet the needs of North Idaho College and the students.
