Carstairs Courier, Tuesday, September 27, 2016 - 7 Cremona’s own Kyle Crosbie drafted for WHL BY patricia riley MVP Staff Noel West/MVP Staff Hugh Sutherland School Kodiaks senior girls volleyball player Bella Robinson spikes the ball during the Kodiaks’ game against the Prairie Christian Academy Sabres at Hugh Sutherland School on Sept. 23. The game was part of the Carstairs Kodiaks & Didsbury Dragons Senior Girls Invitational Volleyball Tournament held over the weekend. Cremona’s own 15-year-old Kyle Crosbie is hoping to get the opportunity to play for the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL after being drafted earlier this year. He has been playing hockey since he was four years old and would like to eventually play in the NHL. “I carried around a hockey stick at 20 months old and all I remember is that I wanted to play hockey,” said Crosbie. “The game is fun and competitive and requires teamwork to succeed. It’s a fast-paced game and is the game I love.” He found out he was selected by the Kelowna Rockets on May 5, the day of the WHL bantam draft. “I was fortunate to make the Alberta Cup team and represent the central team in April, which is a huge tournament that gives WHL scouts and managers the opportunity to see talented players before the draft,” he said. Hugh Sutherland of Carstairs came out on top beating Didsbury in two matches, 25-22 and 25-12. Central Alberta Christian finished first in the consolation beating Ardrossan in two matches, 25-21 and 29-27. Cremona finished sixth in the consolation falling to Three Hills in two sets (25-12, 25-20). In their other consolation games, Didsbury lost two of three matches to Cremona and two straight to Central Alberta Christian. Meanwhile, Hugh Sutherland fell in two of three to Three Hills and two straight to Ardrossan. Both Hugh Sutherland and Didsbury finished fourth in their respective pools. Sutherland lost to Central Alberta Christian, Prairie Christian Academy and Spirit River in Pool A, while Didsbury fell to Ardrossan, St. Joseph’s Collegiate (Brooks) and F.P. Walshe in Pool D. Volleyball tournament a success By LEA SMALDON MVP Staff More than 200 athletes descended on Carstairs and Didsbury Sept. 23 - 25 for the Carstairs Kodiaks & Didsbury Dragons Senior Girls Invitational Volleyball Tournament. “It went very well,” said tournament organizer Henry Paulgaard. “We got lots of positive comments.” Sixteen senior girls volleyball teams, including high-calibre 2A teams, converged on the two towns for the fifth annual competition. “This time we decided to go big,” said Paulgaard. Teams came from as far north as Grand Prairie and from as far south as Lethbridge. Spirit River won the tournament after taking Rundle College in the gold medal game. Carstairs and Didsbury teams made a good showing amongst some very competitive teams effort,” he said. And the kudos kept rolling in long after the tournament was over. “Thank you once again for another great tournament. The volunteers you have are amazing and you continue to showcase your schools and your community incredibly,” Paulgaard recited from an email he received from Scott Reiling, the coach of the Vauxhall team. that usually play against each other only in provincial playdowns, he said. Paulgaard said the sheer number of capable volunteers including everyone from venue coordinators and website updaters to spaghetti supper helpers, made the tournament a success in both towns. “We’ve got fabulous facilities in both schools and great people.
