ORG Shirley “Zen” Campbell Meet the woman who started it all! As we celebrate the Kindleberger Summer Festival milestone 30th season, we warmly welcome home to Parchment legendary Kindleberger play director and Festival originator, ZEN CAMPBELL! Join us for the Festival Parade on Saturday, July 9, 10am, where Zen will be honored as the Festival Parade Grand Marshal! The Festival’s remarkable 30-year story begins with Zen. Please enjoy reading some of the history of the Kindleberger Summer Festival written in Zen’s words. For those who were involved in and experienced the early years, may it evoke many fond memories. For those who are learning how this wonderful community event began, let’s be inspired to carry the effort forward for future generations to enjoy! “I moved to Parchment in January of 1982 and quickly became entranced with Kindleberger Park. I saw from the outset a beautiful and natural amphitheater, and began imagining the possibilities for theater created in and with this outdoor setting. With the support of the Parchment United Methodist Church and an endorsement from the City of Parchment, we staged Livin’ De Life with a small ensemble initially named Parchment’s Greasepaint Alley. Our budget was $600, and we gave two performances, free of charge, on August 19 and 20, 1982. An estimated 800 people attended to support this first effort. In 1983 our committee grew, and we became known as the Kindleberger Summer Festival of the Performing Arts. We changed the performance dates to early July, to coincide with the Kalamazoo Symphony concert in the Park, and offered three days of events, including dance, choral singing, and musical performances. The play was Don Quixote of La Mancha, adapted from Cervantes by Arthur Farquez. I wrote and received our first grant, a mini-grant from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, and received additional support from the City of Parchment, Parchment UMC and the Upjohn Company to meet our $1200 budget. Tom Maas designed the tree and hill logo for the newly created Festival. 1984 saw continued growth in the number and type of performance groups, from the Wellspring Dance Collaborative to the Hallelujah Brass Quintet. Nine performances were offered in addition to the play, Reynard the Fox, and the Symphony’s concert on Monday night. Sponsorships continued to increase, as well, to include corporate and individual donors, the Parchment Schools, churches and civic groups throughout the County. 1985 was a turning point for the Festival, as I finally acquiesced to a widespread request for staging musicals. I wrote and received an Outstate Equity Grant from the Michigan Department of Commerce, received support from the City of Kalamazoo in addition to our growing list festival history of Parchment patrons, and we were able to offer the very popular Meredith Willson musical, The Music Man — again, free of charge. Festival Day had now expanded to include a 5K run, the Arts & Crafts Fair, a Used Book Sale, a parade, more performances, and food booths. A second performance of The Music Man was staged on Sunday, with the Kalamazoo Symphony concert on Monday evening. Whether it was the live ponies pulling the wagon for the staging of the “Wells Fargo Wagon,” or simply the formation of a community celebrating and working together, this was the year that that community truly took ownership of the event. It was a full time, year round effort: the first planning meeting for 1986 was held on July 17, 1985. In 1986, the Festival grew to four days, with three performances of the musical, The Wizard of Oz, as well as the full day of activities and performances on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, July 11-14. A fundraising dance and auction were added to supplement the growing number of patrons and sponsors that allowed the Festival to continue being offered free of charge. The 1987 production of Fiddler on the Roof saw the hillside filled with a supportive and generous audience. We escaped tornado threats and thunder storms, and enjoyed a beautiful weekend — highlighted by a performance on Sunday afternoon by the Chicago Shakespeare Company of Twelfth Night. This performance was made possible by a grant from the Plaza Arts Circle. The Festival was also awarded its first significant grant from the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation for this season, July 10-13. We had an elephant in the production of Barnum, which was staged in the round—under a “big top”—on the top of Scout Hill. It was a summer of record-breaking heat, and extraordinary experiences. I turned over the chair of the Festival Organizing Committee in 1988 to Tim Jenney, then superintendent of Parchment Schools. In 1989, I turned over the direction of the musical, Camelot, during the rehearsal process. My husband learned of his transfer to Ohio that summer, and David Grapes, from the Kalamazoo Civic took over responsibilites as director. Maud Kiwiet-Pantaleoni joined the Festival as director of the children’s plays. 1989 was a huge year for the Festival, as we celebrated the City of Parchment’s 50th Anniversary and James River/ KVP’s 80th anniversary during a nine-day Festival week. Camelot was enormously popular. And the Chicago Shakespeare Company returned for a third season, performing The Taming of the Shrew to conclude the Festival events.” One Woman. One Idea. Many Hands. 30 YEARS! Congratulations and Thank You to all who have followed Zen’s lead, innumerable volunteers who have shared countless hours of their time and boundless passion for community and the arts; sponsors and donors who have generously given funds to support this annual cooperative event. Look how far we’ve come! From the Barnum program, 1988: Barnum, 1988. 4 This Festival began in 1982 with the goal of providing high quality, family-oriented performances free of charge in Kindleberger Park. Our belief in that goal is now shared by corporations and individuals, schools and churches, foundations and our city government. Without this growing support, our efforts would be futile. We celebrate the collaboration with Flowerfest for the appearance of Monsieur Marcel Marceau, and welcome the return of the Chicago Shakespeare Company. We say thank you to those who have believed in us throughout the years of growth, and to those who have supported the 1988 Kindleberger Summer Festival. 1985 Music Man Rehearsal. Much more than a children’s play, the narrative is also a lesson on the precarious nature of freedom, a luxury too often taken for granted. Heidi learns how to live happily in the romantic alpine pasture and finds new friends in high places. However, Heidi almost loses her liberty as she is ripped away from the tranquility of the mountains to tend to Clara, a sick child in the city. Heidi gets into all kinds of mischief in the city and eventually returns to mountain life with Clara. Heidi’s tale of strength and survival will delight and inspire audiences of all ages. performances WED July 6 THUR July 7 FRI July 8 SAT July 9 SUN July 10 5:30pm 5:30pm 5:30pm 4:30pm 4:30pm In Case of Rain: Parchment Middle School 307 N. This will be one of the most highly anticipated events of the summer arts season in Kindleberger Park! Since its inception in February of 1996, the band has made a quick and decisive rise to fame. Many attribute the band’s popularity to its polished vocals, attention to detail in both performance and persona, and the evident chemistry between its members. Whatever the cause, “SHOUT”’s celebrity shows no sign of slowing down. Sought out for its memorable performances, “SHOUT!” has appeared at several Detroit radio station events. The group has even opened for well-known bands like Jefferson Starship, The Lovin’ Spoonful, and even Mitch Ryder. “SHOUT”’s triumph at the Beatlefest Battle of the Beatle Bands in Chicago two years in a row provides testament to the group’s stimulating reproduction of the famed British rock group. “Shout!” Band Members: Greg Gersabeck (John Lennon), Jim Wilcox (George Harrison), John Manier (Paul McCartney), and Kevin Kogut (Ringo Starr). From head to toe, this fantastic tribute to the Fab Four is everything an audience might expect from a Beatles tribute band.
