Controlling your Anger
A well-known
aphorism says
that if you live in
a glass house,
you shouldn’t
throw stones.
The reasons
are destructively clear; we all
reside in the
glass house of human relationships,
and anger remains one of the chief problems that plague humanity. Anger, particularly unrestrained displays of it,
particularly when it
targets an individual, particularly when it is unprovoked and unmerited, always leads to
negative consequences. Always.
Rabbis, even mild-mannered
ones, sometimes fall victim to anger.
Judaism’s greatest teacher, Moshe
Rabbeinu, was not himself exempt,
leading to one of the Torah’s greatest
tragedies. Consider the biblical record.
1) Moses witnesses an Egyptian
taskmaster beating an Israelite slave,
and he reacts immediately and without
any thought of consequences: he kills
him; 2) Moses sees the Israelites
worshipping a golden calf, and he
smashes the Ten Commandments—this
takes place only weeks after the people
receive the Torah at Mount Sinai; and 3)
Moses strikes the rock (parshah
Chukat), thus ending in personal
tragedy.
What happened? When the
Israelites justifiably complain of a lack of
water, God orders Moses to speak to the
rock to give the Israelites water. At this
point, Moses was both tired and
impatient; they have been wandering in
the desert for forty years; with Moses
was a new generation that had no
connection to Egypt. The old generation
had died off, including Moses’ beloved
sister, Miriam. The people complain
rather petulantly: “Why did you make us
leave Egypt?”
Moses reacts harshly: “Shimu na
hamorim!” or “Listen, you rebellious
ones: shall we get water out of this
rock!” The rabbis examined Moses’ sin in
what is one of the most mystical and
difficult passages in the Torah. If Moses
had been wrong in disobeying God’s
command, why did God allow water to
come from the rock? Maimonides says
that Moses’ sin was not that he
disobeyed God, but that he resorted to
personal attacks. It then became clear
that the fabric of respect had been torn,
that Moses could now no longer lead the
nation. The result is that God denies
Moses his one dream: entry to the
Promised Land.
There is an instructive lesson
here. While anger can sometimes lead to
meeting immediate goals, it can never
solve the larger long-term problems.
Moses’ anger might have given the
people water, but it compromised his
standing as a leader.
God understands that a leader
must be level-headed; a leader must love
his people. By his striking the rock, the
Torah says, Moses failed to “sanctify God
in the eyes of the nation.” He left people
with the view that yelling and acting
nasty would get results. This, however,
was unacceptable; it was a desecration
of God’s name.
I would like to share with you a
profound lesson I learned from a Rebbe
of mine. On one occasion when we were
studying the laws of Kashrut, and of the
importance of eating only that which is
permitted by Torah law, he made the
following statement:
“Alan, always remember that
while it is very important to very carefully
watch what goes into your mouth, it is
equally important to carefully watch
what comes out of your mouth.”
When we raise our voices—and
become furious—as a way to intimidate
others, we might get our way, as a child
throwing a temper tantrum often does,

but we can never silence the thoughts of
those we have harmed, nor of those who
are watching. Public displays of anger
separate us from others; public displays
of anger make us more distant to others;
public displays of anger make people
fearful, but not trusting.
A person is judged, the Talmud
says, by three things: kiso, koso v’
ka’aso, by his pocket (his generosity), by
his cup (his appetites), and by his anger.
Unrestrained anger is harmful. The
Torah calls this an unrighteous anger,
since it does not glorify God’s name; it
does not better anyone; it does not even
benefit the individual displaying the
anger, as the story of Moses striking the
rock shows.
The underlying concept of the
Kol Nidre prayer is to bring to light the
importance of our words. The capacity
of speech separates humans from the
rest of Creation; our words define us,
often critically, as one well-known
saying painfully proves: “Everyone
thought he was a fool, and when he
opened his mouth they had their proof.”
Being a fool in your speech is bad
enough, but it’s worse if you let your
words betray a spark of evil.
This would be bad, since it
would mean that evil has overtaken us.
Strength comes from controlling our
inclinations to lash out. Ben Zoma
states: “Who is strong? One who
overpowers his inclinations.” While we
should always watch our words and be
slow to anger, Rosh Hashanah is the
perfect time for self reflecting. Have we
hurt others with our speech? Were we
quick to anger? There is never justification for either. After all, as Ben Zoma
again states: “Do not scorn any man, and
do not discount any thing. For there is
no man who has not his hour, and no
thing that has not its place.”

I look forward
to seeing your

As we welcome in the High Holy
Days, a sense of trepidation sets
in. I must admit that often during
this period, I feel a sense of guilt
and sometimes failure. Do you
ever get such a feeling around
this time?
This falls in line with what this
season represents. We must be
critical in judging our performance
or lack there of, during the past
year. If we fail to be fair in assessing our performance, then
advancement is impossible. By
recognizing that there is truly
room for improvement, and that
we have not met all expectations,
can we improve and build upon
past achievements. New goals are
set and new commitments made.
As I write this, Israel is in middle
of a war! As a Jew, I cannot help
but feel concern for the young
men and women that put their
lives at risk to defend our homeland! I feel for all the citizens of
Israel that have to endure deadly
daily missile threats. Even more
so, I feel the injustice that the
world imposes on Israel, an injustice that no other country in the
world feels. I use Syria as an example. While Syria murders thousands of its citizens, for no reason
but political ideological differences, the UN simply does not
care! Israel on the other hand, is
forced to endure terrorism! The
USA travels thousands of miles,
crosses an entire ocean, to defend
itself, but Israel may not do so
when rockets are fired at its lone
international airport and major
metropolitan areas! What a disgrace on the international communities!
recognizing that God is the sole
King of the universe. I pray that
God brings peace to Israel. I pray
that God consoles all those
affected by this conflict. I pray
that God's rule over our world
brings a quick and favorable
resolve.
I pray that you all have a Shana
Tova
Umetooka.

Hachodesh, the Blessing of the
New Month, a time of peace, both

this war will have ended. One of
the themes of Rosh Hashanah is
BIKKUR CHOLIM
The word mitzvah means command, although it is sometimes incorrectly translated as good deed. The mitzvah
of bikkur cholim, visiting the sick, is a classic example of an action which is both a mitzvah and a good deed.
This mitzvah is considered an honoured part of our tradition.
Please advise the Rabbi’s office (514 - 484-1122 ext. 110) if you are ill or if you know of a
congregant or a member of a congregant’s family who is ill. Your call can go a long way
towards helping individuals through a particularly difficult period.
Rabbi Bright may call them or visit their bedside or generally be available to them at
their time of need.

Dear Friends,
I would like
to focus on what we
are
planning
at
Shaare Zedek for the
next 2 years as I continue to serve as your
President.
Our Board of Directors, which was
elected in June at the Annual General Meeting, has 12 new members and 5 returning
members from the previous Board. This in
itself is very encouraging since it shows a
new interest in the shul from members who
have never served before. As a result we
have resurrected numerous committees that
were inoperable for several years because of
a lack of interest. In this edition of the
Koleinu we have asked each chairperson to
write a short report on their committee and
the plans they have for the next 2 years.
Please review this information.
Each of the committees, aside
from coming up with new ideas to promote
the shul, will be working on the numerous
recommendations that were enunciated in
the Strategic Plan that was adopted by the
Board of Directors in October, 2013.
With the financial support of our
congregants we will continue to make the
necessary repairs inside and outside the
Synagogue in order to keep the building
attractive.
Our Annual Raffle which was
held in June, was a tremendous success
thanks to the efforts of our Executive Director, Nelly Kadoch and members Lili
Yesovitch, Bev Rath and Beverly Silverstone. The results of the Raffle event is
included in this Koleinu.
Our clergy continues to provide
us with beautiful services on Shabbat as
well as during various holidays. We are
delighted to welcome back Cantor Boaz
Davidoff for the High Holy Days in the
Main Sanctuary. Rabbi Daniel Goldfarb
will be heading up the Auxiliary Services.
We are privileged to have Cantor Marc
Neiwirth from Columbus, Ohio, who will
be assisting Rabbi Goldfarb.
I am going to give a sermon on Rosh Hashanah that is going to say the very opposite of the one that I gave
last Rosh Hashanah. Therefore, if you agreed with what I said then, brace yourselves for what I am going
to say this coming Yom Tov. And if you disagreed with what I said last year, listen well to what I am
going to say on Rosh Hashanah.
Last Rosh Hashanah, I spoke to parents and to the grandparents, who were present, saying that I believe
that our children are entitled to autonomy, which means that they have the right to choose what school
and what college they want to go to, and they have the right to choose what profession they want to enter,
and that they are even entitled to choose their own mates, without our permission, and without asking for
our approval. I said to the parents and to the grandparents present that I know that this is not easy for us
to accept. We would much rather that our children followed in our footsteps, and that they listened to our
advice, and that they went to the colleges that we would like them to go to, and that they chose the professions that we would like them to choose, and that they married the mates whom we would like them to
marry. But I said that, if they don’t? - That is their right, and that we have to accept that fact.
I said that our children and our grandchildren are entitled to live their lives their way, and that they need
not be carbon copies of us, or robots who live precisely the way we want them to.
This year, I intend to speak to the children and the grandchildren. I will not detail here what it is I am going to say. Therefore, if you have a child or a grandchildren who plans to attend services with you, tell
them to pay attention to what I am about to say. And if your children and your grandchildren will not be
in attendance, you will to listen carefully, and then, as soon as Yom Tov is over, call them, and tell them
what I said.

Our Torah Fund theme this year is "Mishpacha" - Family. On Wednesday evening,
May 28 our annual Torah Fund event was held with lovely turnout of
ladies and several gentlemen. On the same evening, the installation of
Sisterhood's Executive and Board took place.
Our guest speaker was Barbara Victor, the Clinical Director at Ometz
who enlightened us on today's Jewish family compared to family life as
we knew it in the mid-20th century.
She talked about how we should accept people's different lifestyles and
how we should be open and welcome them into our Jewish community.
Another successful Torah Fund evening was enjoyed by all!

Hi, my name is Jordan Heller and I am a grade 8 student at Bialik High
School. I love playing baseball, hockey and basketball. I especially enjoy
hanging with my friends watching sports, playing sports on the street and
playing Xbox. I want to thank Yosi for preparing me for this big day. It has
been a great experience. I really enjoyed my lessons for my Haftorah, playing a little basketball and discussing football in his office. It was really nice
to have my father participate in some of the lessons as well. It will be such
a meaningful moment to do a prayer with him on the Bima. I am looking
forward to celebrating this unforgettable day with all my family and friends.

Hi my name is Samantha Warhaft-Graziano. My Bat Mitzvah is October 25,
2014. I have just completed Beechwood Elementary School. I will be
attending West Island College in the fall. I love to play hockey. I've been
playing since I was 4 years old. Last year I started snowboarding lessons at
Mont Rigaud. I really enjoyed it. This fall I will also be starting dance at
Bonnie's School of Dance! It is a great studio! I'm really looking forward to
my Bat Mitzvah!

Hi, my name is Jacob Berman. Some of my hobbies include: judo, playing
the trombone and biking. My favourite type of music is rock. In the future,
I want to become a Pediatrician. My Bar Mitzvah is in November. To me, a
Bar Mitzvah represents a time when your family and friends gather together to hear you read from the Torah. Also, you get more responsibilities and
privileges. It was an amazing experience practicing with Yosi. I learned a
lot and had fun. He was a fantastic teacher!

November 15, 2014
My name is Adam Coplan. I am in grade 8 at Hopewell Avenue Public
School in Ottawa, Ontario and I’m going to Glebe High School next year.
My Bar Mitzvah is in November and I have been studying with my Cantor,
Daniel Benlolo, since February 2012. My hobbies include hockey, tennis,
writing and playing the trombone. I’m really excited to be having my Bar
Mitzvah in the synagogue where my grandparents are members and my
father and uncle had their Bar Mitzvahs. There is a lot of family history that
I can now be a part of. My parents have been working really hard to plan
my Bar Mitzvah and I appreciate them doing a really good job. It has been
kind of tough organizing my friends’ appearance at the Bar Mitzvah, considering it’s away from Ottawa, so I want to thank them for making their best
efforts to come. I can’t wait to celebrate this special event with my friends
and family.

My name is Andrea Buksbaum. I am a graduate of JPPS. My Bat Mitzvah will
be in the month of November, 2014. Last December, my family and I had a
very special trip to Israel (my first) in honour of my Bat Mitzvah. The experiences we had, the amount I learned, created both cherished memories
and a deepening bond with Israel. My interests include: theatre, skiing, soccer and reading. I would like to thank Yosi Even-Hen for being an incredible
teacher. I am grateful for his patience, encouragement and humour. I look
forward to sharing this special occasion with my friends and family.

My name is Izabel Jordan Liebmann and I will be celebrating my Bat Mitzvah
on Rosh Chodesh Kislev in November. I recently graduated from St. George’s
Elementary School and I am excited to begin attending Royal West Academy
in September. I have many varied interests but my favorites include playing
piano, reading, riding my bike, swimming and spending time with family and
friends. I have loved the time I have spent with Yosi learning how to read
Hebrew and studying all the prayers that I look forward to singing at my Bat
Mitzvah.

Frances Bokser

I was born in Montreal and in 1958 I married Benny Bokser. We have 2 children, Howard
(Mona) and Pamela (Coby) and 2 grandchildren, Rory who had his Bar Mitzvah at SZC, is a
student at McGill University and Jessy at Dawson College. After attending High Holiday
services at Shaare Zedek Congregation as non-members for 25 years, we became members
in 2002. In 2004, Herb Finkelberg asked me to join the bulletin committee. Two years later
I became the editor of Reflections, now known as Koleinu. I was on the shul Board of
Directors for 4 years, including 2 years on the Executive and now on the Board of
Sisterhood as Treasurer. I have been a volunteer all my adult life serving on several
Boards. My major organizations were National Council of Jewish Woman, Montreal Section
where I held many positions including Co-President and Director of Finance and Golden
Age Association, now Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors where I held many positions
including President. My short career was as the Directrice du Scrutin of the Provincial Riding of D’Arcy McGee from 1989 – 2000. In this capacity, I signed the official documents
declaring the winning candidates to represent D’Arcy McGee: Robert Libman in 1989 and Lawrence Bergman in 1994
& 1998. Now in my retirement years I’m really enjoying the challenge of being the editor of Koleinu. I am fortunate to
be working with wonderful staff in the shul office. I am honoured to have been chosen Eshet Chayil.

My wife Shelley, our four children and I have been members at Shaare Zedek
Congregation for over 10 years. My family has celebrated many simchas at Shaare Zedek,
and we have also been comforted during difficult times. We always enjoy attending the
High Holiday services and I also attend daily minyans on a regular basis. I hope that
Shaare Zedek continues to be an important part of our lives for many years to come.

When my mother passed away in March of 2008, I attended services twice a day at the
Shaare Zedek to say Kaddish. Leon Penn and the late Cantor Fogel welcomed me and
made me feel very comfortable during that trying period. Yosi and Rabbi Bright were
instrumental in motivating me to get involved in the synagogue. It started with helping
Leon Penn to sell raffle tickets and later my old friend Alan Kenley invited me to a
Men's Club meeting where eventually I accepted a position to do advertising for the
Club Events and Programming. Even though my work schedule was full, I made time to
attend meetings and fulfill my responsibilities. It was both enjoyable and gratifying to
work on these committees. Paula my wife and best friend has always encouraged and
supported me in any task I accepted. The Shaare Zedek provides me with a "Haimish"
feeling every time I walk through the doors. Seeing all the old familiar faces, being
greeted "Good Shabbos" and "Good Yom Tov" fills me with happiness and peace. For
me, the Shaare Zedek is a comforting place to be.

Ben Merson Chatan Maftir
I was born in Montreal in 1922 and graduated from Commercial High School in 1939.
Soon after I served in the Canadian Armed forces from 1942-1946. I specialized in the
research and development of winter warfare equipment. I have three children; Doreen,
Mark and Beverly; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. I have been married
to Suzanne Rusinek since 1986. I have been a member of Shaare Zedek Congregation
since 1956. From 1960-1964 I was on the Board of Directors and I am still active in the
synagogue. Shaare Zedek has opened new vistas for me even though I am now in my
nineties. It is introducing me to new, energetic acquaintances. Simultaneously, it is
returning me to my earlier years when I started Cheder. I have been attending the daily
services on a regular basis, which is very gratifying. It is also most enjoyable to be
associating and interacting with the Minyanaires. Finally, I have been studying Haftorahs
with Cantor Yosi Even-Hen and finding this greatly rewarding. I want to thank Shaare Zedek and its congregation
for everything that has been given me.

The women who belong to Shaare
Zedek Sisterhood are a diverse
group! Some of us work. Some of us
work and take care of children,
ferrying them hither and yon to
activies. Some of us are grandmothers
who pitch in to help with and enjoy the
children. Some of us go to school.
Some of us have a lot of time to spare
and some a few moments. So, what do
we have in common? We all have a
desire to support our Congregation, to
understand and perpetuate our ties to
Conservative Judaism and to reinforce
our bonds with Israel and World
Jewry.
This message is being written at the
end of July, a time when Israel is under
constant bombardment, when many of
us have relatives in danger and a time
when young men and women are risking their lives in the army every day.
Our Sisterhood, part of International
Northeast Region of Women's League
for Conservative Judaism, is affiliated
with Kehillat Netzach Israel in
Ashkelon. This is a Centre where people, especially children, go for activities from their homes. It is summertime
and they have camps as we do.
This year there is a difference. They
spend much of their time in the
Kehillat's bomb shelter where the
adults do their best to provide things
to distract the children. When the siren
sounds in Ashkelon, the rockets are
very close and there is little time to run
to shelter. We are in constant touch
with their director, Terri Davis, who
emails us every day except Shabbat,
with news of what is happening.

donated money through the Canadian
Masorti
Foundation,
especially
earmarked for our Kehillat, but we also
write to Terri each day as they appreciate the thoughts and prayers of those of
us outside Israel.

In preparing these words about the Montreal Mega Mission, the first thing I did was “google” the definitions of Mega
and Mission. The word mega means “of huge proportions”. 14 buses and 600 people is MEGA Mission has two
meanings: 1. An important assignment carried out for political, religious, or commercial purposes, usually involving
travel and 2. A vocation or calling of a religious organization to go into the world and spread its faith.
Now let’s take these definitions and see where they lead. Let’s start with mega.
Day 1 – arrive in Israel at 7:30 am and right onto our buses and off to an airforce base, then onto a community garden
in Jerusalem to plant flowers, followed by Shehechiyanu at the Windmill, an evening event in Safra Square, and dinner
outside the Jaffa Gate. … 600 plus people.
Day 2 – Yad Vashem, Mt. Hertzel, Mechane Yehuda, Kabbalat Shabbat at the Davidson Center with many more
Montrealers living in Jerusalem, onto the Waldorf Astoria Hotel for Shabbat dinner with the Chief Cantor of the IDF and
the IDF Rabbinical Choir.
Day 3 – Shabbat – our only quiet day. Prayer at assorted synagogues, walking tours of the old city, lunch in the hotels
and then off to Shabbat University for lectures, Havdallah and an evening on our own.
Day 4 – Tour Jerusalem in the morning. A wedding atop Massada in the afternoon, dinner in the dessert with real china
and linen and 600 people and a 20 piece orchestra.
Day 5 – Personal track day and dinner with friends.
Day 6 – Up at 5:30 am to catch a special bullet train to Beersheva, our twin city, an oasis in the dessert. Our buses
follow us there and whisk us off to Latrun for dinner in an olive grove and a show. 600 Montrealers, 200 Birthright
participants, 400 Canadians living in Israel and 1000 IDF soldiers wearing Montreal Canadians hats. 2200 people for
dinner on china plates with linen tablecloths and yes, the hot food was hot and the cold salads were cold! We were
addressed by Tzippi Livni, Israeli’s Minister of Justice and entertained by Shiri Maimon, Israeli’s top R & B performer.
Day 7 – Off on our personal tracks again, but first the luggage has to be out by 8 am as we end the day in Tel Aviv. After
checking into the hotels we are off to dinner with our buses – our mini missions within the Mega.
Day 8 – Breakfast and we are off on 14 separate tours of Tel Aviv. Two hour lunch break, back on the buses and
heading to Ramat Hanadiv and the Baron de Rothchild Memorial Gardens for the closing ceremony and Sikum. On the
buses again as we travel to Sdot Yam for a final dinner and Farewell. At 3:30 am we head for Ben Gurion Airport and
board our flight home.
So… this is MEGA – Mega people, Mega activities, Mega fun and Mega exhaustion!
Now, what was the mission and what is our mission.
The mission was to inspire us, to create a sense of connectedness to Israel, the Montreal Jewish community and to the
Jewish people. We came away with a greater awareness of the challenges that Israel and her people face every day. The
people of Israel let us know the important role that the Montreal Jewish community plays in their daily lives as a result
of all that our partnerships have built.
For many non-Federation connected people it was an insight into the Montreal Jewish Community as well. Some
learned, for the first time, of the work that Federation CJA does through its affiliated agencies. Many people did not
know of our seniors at risk, of the 20,000 people living below the poverty line, of the need for the community to run a
soup kitchen. Now they do. Our mission is to make sure that this work continues.
Like any mission, mega or small, there was work to be done, and that work was the work of Tikun Olum through
tzedkah. Those of us who, as the professionals say “had the conversation” with others were astounded by the results.
The generosity shown through these donations was a direct result of the fact that this mission opened all our eyes and
hearts.
So yes, we saw Israel in a Mega way, as only Federation CJA can show her to us. Each one of us, along with almost 600
of our new friends fell in love with our homeland. The Mega Mission did not change me, but reaffirmed everything I
already knew and believed in. It really “reJewvinated” me. Kol Hakavod to Federation CJA for a mission well done and a
journey well taken.

RABBI DANIEL C. GOLDFARB
Rabbi Daniel Goldfarb is a native of Boston. He graduated Harvard College
and Columbia Law School and received his M.H.L. and Rabbinic Ordination
from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He worked for 25 years as an
attorney for Israel’s Ministries of Justice and Finance and in private practice
in Jerusalem before serving as Director of the Conservative Yeshiva in
Jerusalem from 2000 through June 2013. He continues on the faculty of the
Conservative Yeshiva, where he teaches Liturgy and Pirkei Avot, and teaching at Limmud Conferences and as Scholar in Residence around the world.
CANTOR MARC M. NEIWIRTH
Cantor Marc M. Neiwirth has served as High Holiday Chazan in several
synagogues during the course of his career. Marc most recently held the
position of Executive Director of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Columbus,
Ohio, where he served for 16 years. He currently is president of the North
American Association of Synagogue Executives (NAASE). He is a native of
Union, New Jersey and is an alumnus of the Jewish Educational Center in
Elizabeth. He attended the Combined Program of Columbia University and
the Jewish Theological Seminary (now known as List College) and holds an
undergraduate degree in Hebrew Culture and Education from New York
University.
Cantor Neiwirth is married to Anne and they are the parents of a grown
daughter.
BILLY BOOTH BA’AL TEKIAH
Billy loves music and plays trombone in numerous styles including classical,
jazz, R&B and Klezmer. Active in sports: swimming, skiing, roller-blading,
cycling. Billy is periodically called upon to chant the Haftorah during the
year as well as blow the Shofar in the High Holy Days Auxiliary Service.

Dear congregants,
My name is Michael Wasser and I am the new Parness at Shaare Zedek. I have been
with the synagogue since my parents moved here with me in 1967, except for nine
years when I was out of town. Shaare Zedek has been a big part of my life. My Bar
Mitzvah was here in 1972. My parents raised me to be a shul goer, so I continued
with regular Shabbos attendance after this. When they passed away, I became a
minyanaire, attending the daily services. Later, I began to help with the downstairs
auxiliary services during the High Holy Days. It has been a steady progression to my
new position! What is so wonderful about Shaare Zedek is the caring atmosphere
that the congregants, as well as the lay leaders and the clergy help to create. I hope
to encourage and maintain this in my new position, and to make the services a
meaningful spiritual experience. Please do not hesitate to speak to me when you see me, or contact me
through the synagogue if you have some issue to discuss.
RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE
Your Religious Services Committee has been diligently involved in assuring a smooth and enjoyable High
Holiday season this year of 5775.
Under the guidance of Rabbi Bright and Cantor Even Hen and with great assistance from our “veterans” like Arthur Newman, Larry Wexler and Morris
Wechsler we are much advanced in this quest.
As is the custom, deserving individuals will be honored with Aliyot and this practice, as before, will continue in years to come. Our Parnass Michael Wasser has
been very helpful in this area. Also, our Tallesim have been inspected and dealt
with in accordance with Halachah, and we thank the efforts of Sarah Polsky
Rakofsky.
We will welcome once again Cantor Davidoff for the main sanctuary who gave us
such an emotional service for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur last year. The
auxiliary service will be conducted by Rabbi Daniel Goldfarb and Cantor Marc
Neiwirth. We look forward to another successful service.

The plan is to create an interactive hub that provides information on the goings on at the Shul for current
members and use the website as a platform to attract new members especially young families.

The purpose of this committee is:
 To seek out new arrivals to the community, as well as residents who are not
affiliated with any local synagogue; to acquaint them with the various aspects of the
synagogue program, and with the synagogue's particular approach to Conservative
Judaism; and to extend to them a warm welcome to the synagogue and an
invitation to join.
 To encourage unaffiliated Jews to consider formal affiliation, stressing both the
privileges and responsibilities that come with synagogue membership, and to
embrace and orient new members to the congregation.
 To present to new members appropriate documentation of membership including a statement of the purposes of synagogue membership and a gift to mark their
formal association with the synagogue.
 To maintain an ongoing program of education that is designed to encourage
personal participation by all members in the synagogue, and to foster a feeling of genuine warmth in

For a few years a group of women have gathered
at Yosi's class at the Synagogue. We meet at 8:45 on
Tuesdays. We study all kinds of prayers and we are
prepared for Rosh Chodesh, Kabbalat Shabbat, the
Holidays and, the biggest event -The Book of Ruth
during Shavuot.
You can't read Hebrew? Not a problem! Transliteration
is freely available!
You don't have a good voice? This group was made for
you! This is not the Met or Broadway! We sing because
we love to and Yosi can make you sound good unless
you have been professionally diagnosed as tone deaf.
Yoga classes will resume with Barbara
Pearce on Wednesday afternoons.
We are fortunate to have our wonderful
teacher Barbara Pearce return again this
fall to lead us in our yoga practice.
Please join us for stretching, breathing
and relaxation techniques that will fill you
with inner peace and energy.
We learn as much about what we are singing as how to
do it. Yosi is a patient and thorough teacher.
We are all ages!
If you can join us on Tuesdays we would welcome you,
but if this is not a good time for you,plan to join us when
we conduct a Kabbalat Shabbat Service or chant the
Book of Ruth. Then we meet at night and you will

The committee is very happy to report that the annual raffle held on Thursday June 26, 2014 was again
very successful. We achieved our goal of netting a surplus of $120,000. Our thanks go out to all members who
pushed very hard to sell a total of 1,016 tickets. Special mention to our 3 leading ticket sellers, Dorel Industries,
Leon Penn and Larry Wexler.
This year, aside from the $18,000 grand prize, we added 10 prizes of $150 each and gave out almost 30
door prizes which included restaurant/food coupons, beauty salon gift certificates, jewelry, hockey tickets and
electronic items.
The evening began downstairs in the Ann Suliteanu Celebration Hall with an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and
a lovely buffet dinner. The draw itself was held in the Main Sanctuary where the Mayor of Cote St. Luc, Anthony
Housefather, acted as the Master of Ceremonies and kept everything running smoothly.
We look forward to another huge success next year, so please bookmark June 18, 2015 as the date for next
year’s raffle.
Lastly, we would like to thank our committee for making this event such a great success. Our thanks go
out to Bev Silverstone and Bev Rath, and of course we could not have achieved our goal without the advice and
leadership of our President, Ron Silverstone and our Executive Director, Nelly Kadoch.

AUBERGE SHALOM POUR FEMMES: 25 YEARS OF SERVICE
During the harvest celebration of Sukkot, our synagogue will be joining with other Montreal synagogues to
participate in the Purple Ribbon Campaign to end conjugal violence. Purple ribbons will be tied in sukkahs,
shelters of peace, in honour of the women and children who have suffered conjugal violence and in recognition of
those who struggle against such violence in their lives. A ceremony, weaving together the Jewish themes of
Sukkot and reflection on the issue of conjugal violence will be held in sukkahs and rabbis will deliver sermons on
the issue.
Rabbi Twerski reminds us: It takes a community to end conjugal violence. Congregants are asked to wear the
purple ribbon as a symbol of commitment to ending the cycle of violence. Individual purple ribbons will be
available in the synagogues.
The Purple Ribbon Campaign is an initiative of Auberge Shalom pour femmes, a Centre for women and children
who are the victims of conjugal violence, offering shelter and counselling services to the Jewish community for 25
years.
