MAKE THE MOST
OF YOUR TIME
Have you ever had the experience of rushing around in a panic before a trip?
This is probably something we have all experienced. It is very easy to prevent
the frantic and stressful trip preparations -- all it takes is a bit of organization and
scheduling. Ultimately, if you start your trip prepared, you will have more fun
during your trip and the return home will be far less hectic.
1. START BY MAKING A LIST. Determine everything you need
to bring, including all of the food, clothing, and supplies you will need during
your trip. Also include everything you want to get done before you leave.
Making a list will help you stay organized and focused as you prepare for your
trip. As you get things collected and complete tasks, you can check them off. A
list will also ensure that you don't forget anything that is extremely important.
2. PACK EARLIER RATHER THAN LATER. The most
stressful part of getting ready for a trip is packing, and it get exponentially worse
as you become more limited on time. If you pack ahead of time you have
more time to make sure you have what you want, and if you don't have it you
have time to get it. Most of us pack at the last moment, but in those rare
instances that we pack earlier, it is like a huge weight being lifted off our shoulders. This is a wonderful feeling, and will help make your entire trip more fun.
3. CLEAN UP THE HOUSE BEFORE YOU GO. Nothing
is as nice as coming home to a nice clean house. You will more thoroughly
enjoy the bulk of your time away from home if you don't have the thought of
coming home to a dirty house in the back of your mind. Leaving a clean
home means making sure that all of the dishes are clean before you go, the
laundry is clean, and anything that might spoil (in the refrigerator or on the
counters) has been disposed of.
Coming home to a clean house is like an extension of your vacation; you
don't have to get right back into the daily grind of cleaning. Another great thing
to do before you leave is to put clean sheets on the bed. Nothing is as nice as
coming home to clean sheets on the bed.
4. PACK THE CAR UP THE NIGHT BEFORE. Once you
have everything ready to go, bring it all together in one place to double check
that you really do have everything you need. Then you can load everything
into the car the night before you leave. This will leave more time to get going
the following morning as well as more time to make sure everything is loaded
as efficiently as possible. You will be able to make sure that the things you will
want during the travel time are accessible rather than buried, which will significantly reduce travel stress.
5. LEAVE EARLIER THAN YOU NEED TO. If you are going
on a road trip, hit the road early. You will have more time to enjoy the
scenery along the way. If you leave early, you may even be able to stop at
points of interest along the way, stop for lunch or coffee breaks, or do some
exploring.
6. MAKE SURE THE TANK IS FULL BEFORE YOU
LEAVE. The worst feeling when you go on a road trip is finding out that
you have less fuel than you thought and you don't know when you will come
upon another gas station. If you have a time limit or if you have to catch a
ferry, it may be prudent to make sure your gas tank is full the night before you
leave. If the tank is full, you won't have to worry about having an empty tank
in the middle of nowhere.
Preparedness is the best way to make sure your travel preparations are as
free of stress as possible. Try these simple techniques and you may find that
you even enjoy getting ready for your trip, rather than running around in a fog
of worry. ■

CAMPING 101
Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and take a much needed mini-vacation
without spending a fortune. Staying overnight at a campground typically runs from $10
to $25. Compare that to a motel stay, which can easily cost $75 and up, and you'll see
that the savings add up fast.
Of course, if you haven't gone camping since you were a kid – or you've never gone
camping, period – then expect an initial investment in time, money, and energy. But it's
worth it. Spending several relaxing weekends a year in the midst of breathtaking
scenery is good therapy for the body, mind, and soul.
THE ESSENTIALS
Before you head into the great outdoors, you'll need some basic equipment. Get a
sturdy tent big enough for your family to sleep in comfortably. Make sure it's watertight
and strong enough to stand up to some wind. Sleeping bags are a must especially if
you're camping in the mountains or the desert – climates that cool down dramatically
at night even during the summer. Check ratings; a sleeping bag that's rated for only
40 F will keep you shivering in nighttime temperatures of 30 F, and you don't
want that. A floor pad or an air mattress (with a good pump) will help you sleep more
comfortably by adding an extra layer between you and the hard floor.
A large electric lantern (with extra batteries just in case) is a must for evenings as well as
for walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night or heading to the lake for some
pre-dawn fishing. Bring several flashlights, too. Lawn chairs are great for a relaxing
afternoon of reading under the trees or for sitting by the campfire at night. Unless
you're prepared to eat nothing but granola bars and fresh fruits and vegetables, buy a
Coleman stove. It's portable, it runs on propane, and it's great for morning coffee or a
hot dinner of canned stew (don't forget the can opener).
By the way, inexpensive, durable dinner plates and cups work better than the rugged
metal cups and plates you'll see in camping stores. Why? Because your hot chocolate
doesn't stay hot very long inside one of those metal cups. Bring an inexpensive plastic
tablecloth to cover picnic tables. And a large plastic bin works well for doing the dishes
(remember to bring dish soap).
Be sure to ask the people at the outdoor equipment store how to set up and use
everything – especially your tent and your stove. Don't leave the store with your purchase until you comfortably understand how to use everything. If you have questions
later, don't hesitate to call back.
When you're packing toiletries for your camping trip, include a well-stocked First Aid
kit, bug spray, and sunscreen.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Before you go on that first, momentous camping trip outdoors, learn everything you
can about your chosen destination. Get brochures, look up information on the Internet, and ask as many questions as you can think of. What does the location look like? Is
your site shaded? Are there poisonous shrubs in the area? Will you be camping next to
a river or stream? Are campfires allowed? Is firewood provided?
What are the campground amenities? Are there hot showers on site? Flush toilets? A
campground store? A playground? Where are the nearest medical facilities? If there's a
lake on the premises, ask about boat rentals, fishing permits, and swim beaches.
When you arrive at your campground, scope it out. Find out where the bathrooms
are. Locate the camp hosts, in case you need them later. Read everything posted at
the entrance. Follow the rules. Be safe.
RELAX
The best thing about camping is getting away from it all. Leave behind your cell
phones, your computers, your beepers. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and the fresh air.
Let it all just soak into your pores and revitalize you. Kick back, unwind, slow down
your pace. It's time to smell the wild roses and count the twinkling stars. Relax, and
enjoy! ■

If a fire gets out of control, it can be dangerous both for people and for
wild animals. With these easy tips from Smokey the Bear, you can
make sure that never happens!

place a stick in the water bucket, so any critter that falls in can climb
back out again.

pit, be sure to build your fire
there. If there isn't one, pick an
area that isn't under any tree
branches and dig a small pit.
Make sure there aren't any
twigs, branches, or grasses
nearby that could catch fire.
The ground should be clear
down to the dirt for five feet all
the way around your pit.
Your campground fire pit might have stones circling it or a metal ring.
That's the best kind!
KEEP A FIRE BUCKET AND SHOVEL NEARBY
Whenever you build a campfire, you should have a pail of water and a
shovel nearby. The water is to put on the fire to put out the flames.
The shovel is to scoop up dirt to throw on the fire, in case it gets out

PUT YOUR MATCH IN THE FIRE
After lighting your fire, put the match in it. Never
toss away a match that's still hot or warm.
NEVER LEAVE A FIRE UNATTENDED
This is the most important rule of all. Never leave
your fire unwatched, even for a minute. If everyone else has to go to the bathroom, have one
person stay with the fire and wait until the others
are back.
When it's time for bed, use the bucket and shovel to put your fire out
with water and dirt. Make sure it's all the way out before you turn in
for the night. It's better to put a lot of water on than not enough. Your
fire pit will have all night to dry out and be ready for the next day's
campfire. ■

BUDGET CAMPING
If you're looking to save a few pennies on your family vacation this year, you
can't do better than to plan a camping trip. First and foremost, the savings on
housing is staggering. Where you would pay anywhere from fifty to hundreds
of dollars a night for a hotel, campground stays are far more reasonable. Almost
as dramatic is the amount you'll save on entertainment. Most campgrounds and
RV parks are near gorgeous natural areas where you and your family can play
all day for free, or for a minimal admission fee.
PLAN AHEAD
To get the most bang for your camping buck, plan your trip well in advance.
Many campgrounds and RV parks offer reduced rates for weekly or monthly
stays, so you can save by planning to stay put in one place for longer. Try to
choose a park that's near a place you'd like to explore, such as a scenic mountain range, a great fishing lake, or a new stretch of desert.
You'll also want to scout out your campground options. What other amenities
does each park offer? Will you be interested in cable TV hook-ups? Wi-fi internet access? Rainy-day activities for the kids? You'll find RV parks with everything
from swimming pools and work-out rooms to fishing ponds and onsite boat
launches. Many parks charge for TV and internet hook-ups, but some do not.
Do a little homework in advance so you won't be surprised by any costs when
you arrive at the park.
TEAM UP
Most RV parks and campgrounds welcome large groups, and camping with
friends or family can be a great way to keep the costs down. Your campground
may offer a special group rate if you reserve a certain number of campsites in
one booking. This is a great way to plan a family reunion or to get a group of
friends together. And it also keeps the workload down! With a large group, you
can easily delegate the meals and rotate the duty around, so each family is only
responsible for a few meals over the course of a long weekend.
GET INTO CAMPFIRE COOKING
Once you've chosen to take a camping vacation, the second most significant
thing you can do to save money is to decide to cook your meals at your campsite. By not going out to eat, you'll dine just as cheaply as you do at home. Most
campsites have their own fire pit and grill, which makes campfire cooking easy
so long as you remember to bring all of your pots and pans with you. If you
prefer, you can invest in a Whisperlite or other gas-fueled backpacking stove
that you can set up on the picnic table. Even a small backpacking stove is perfectly capable of cooking meals and hot drinks for two people. If you enjoy fishing, you'll love the feeling of satisfaction you get from catching your own supper!
INVEST IN GOOD GEAR
Aside from your RV, trailer, or tent, you'll need good recreational gear for your
camping trip. A visit to a snowy mountain is a lot more fun if you have all the
sleds, skis, and snowshoes you need for a day on the slopes. Plan ahead by
doing some off-season shopping. In the summer, look for discounts on coldweather gear. Late fall is a perfect time to find sales on boating and hiking equipment, when stores are trying to clear out their stock. Garage sales, rummage
sales, and used equipment stores are also a great place to go for bargains.
While you're shopping, keep an eye out for cooking gear you can use to stock
your RV or camping stores.
Camping has a way of making a person appreciate the little things, from a hot
and hearty meal to a comfy bed for the night. When you spend your days hiking and boating in the great outdoors, enjoying the spectacles of nature, you
don't need money to have a good time. With a little planning and savvy, you'll
be amazed at how economical a camping trip can be! ■

CAMP COOKS
HAM AND EGG SCRAMBLE
Breakfast foods are especially simple. Campers can make all sorts of different
breakfast foods, including pancakes, french toast and eggs. To prepare for a day
full of adventure, having a delicious protein filled breakfast is of utmost importance, which is why the ham and egg scramble is an excellent camping recipe.
1-3 eggs per person, depending on the desired serving size for each person
1-2 ounces of ham cubes, approximately 1/4 inch square
Butter or olive oil
Grated chedder, pepperjack, or swiss cheese (optional)
Place a skillet or other pan over medium heat. Heat the butter or oil in the skillet. When the butter is warm, break the eggs into the pan and add the ham and
cheese. Stir the ingredients together until your scramble has reached the

CLASSIC GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH
The grilled cheese sandwich is one of the favorite comfort foods. These sandwiches can be as adventurous or as traditional as you desire. They are simple to
make and delicious to eat. If you brought a pot with you on your camping trip,
you can heat up some tomato soup to dunk your sandwich in.
2 Slices of bread per person, sourdough, wheat, potato or other type as
desired
2-3 ounces of cheese per person, any type or combination you desire (american cheese, gruyere, medium cheddar, pepperjack, swiss or other)
Butter
Place slices of cheese between two slices of bread. Butter the outside of each
slice of bread. Place sandwiches on a hot grate over a fire. Grill the sandwich,
until the bread is toasted and the cheese has melted. Serve hot, with tomato
soup. If you want to make a more gourmet sandwich you can make if with
gruyere and time or any other combination of spices and cheese.
HAMBURGER OR CHEESEBURGER
No other food is as classic as the cheeseburger. The hamburger is also a delicious, yet delightfully easy dinner to prepare after a long day of camping.
1/4 - 1/2lb lean or extra-lean hamburger per person
1 slice cheese per person (optional)
1 bun per person
Divide the hamburger into equal portions and shape into rounds. Place on a
hot grate and cook until the meat is barely pink in the middle and the juices run
clear. While the hamburger is cooking, butter the buns and place on the grate
to warm before serving if you like toasted buns. Turn the hamburgers over
halfway through the cooking process, and place the cheese on top of the burger. When the meat is cooked and the buns are warm, remove from heat, place
on the buns and serve hot with the desired condiments and sides.

Tent camping brings out the kid in everyone. There's something special about
climbing into that cozy fabric house and snuggling down for a good night's sleep.
And with the remarkable tents made today, you can easily find one that perfectly
suits your needs.
This year, pack your own, full-sized pillow. Invest in a durable air mattress or use
several layers of padding (this will help keep you warm, too). If you tend to get chilly
in your sleeping bag, bring along some extra blankets or a comforter. Do everything
you can to give yourself a good night's rest, so you can concentrate on enjoying
your camping trip.
If your tent is a new one, be sure to practice putting it up, taking it down, and stowing it before you leave home. You never know when you'll wind up having to put
your tent up in the dark or in foul weather, and nothing is worse than raising a tent
for the first time when you're under added stress.
If you've ever woken up in a soaked, soggy tent, then you know how important it is
to become familiar with your tent's rain fly. Many rain flies come with their own
poles because it's critical that the fly not touch the tent itself – that's the secret to
keeping your tent dry. It may also be important that you stake your fly or use strings
tied to nearby trees to keep the fabric away from that of your tent. Even if you don't
expect rain, your fly is still important for keeping dew off the tent and, therefore, for
keeping you nice and dry.

Remember to never store food in your tent – especially in bear country! – and
never allow an open flame near a tent. Instead, invest in some battery-powered
headlamps or lanterns. Many tents have little pouches sewn into the inside of the
tent fabric – this is a smart place to keep your flashlight or headlamp for easy access.
Using a drop cloth or tarp underneath your tent is smart, since it will extend the life
of your tent. And if you want to go tent camping with your medium-sized or larger
dog, consider a tent with an outer vestibule for your dog to sleep in. Individual tents
for dogs are also available in a range of sizes.
During your trip, do your best to keep your tent dry and well-aired. If the nights are
damp, but the days are sunny, consider detaching your fly during the day and draping it over a bush or picnic table to dry out in the sun. Giving your tent a good shaking-out every few days will help keep it clean.
If you're going to be camping in a buggy area with mosquitoes and flies, make sure
to keep your tent zipped closed during the day. Also, if you know you're going to
be in a buggy area, you might consider using a tall, roomy tent, the kind that you
could stand in comfortably. Some tents come equipped with side flaps that you can
roll up and cover with mosquito netting, creating a bug-free, airy space for card
games and reading.

WILDLIFE WATCHING TIPS
Nothing's more exciting than spotting a wild animal when you're out
in the wilderness. No matter how big or small the animal is, it's fun
to watch it living its life‚ hunting for food, building its home, or
exploring its territory. If you're patient and observant, you can catch
wild animals doing some fascinating things. You might see chipmunks
chase each other up and down trees, watch rabbits eating, or see a
deer strolling through a field. These tips will help you have a great
wildlife-watching experience.
Most wildlife encounters end because the animals scurries away.
That almost always happens because it's spotted you and is afraid of
what you might do. If you want to animal to stay, so you can watch it
longer, you'll need to do two things: keep very quiet, and don't get
too close. How close is too close, you ask? If you see the animal
looking at you or adjusting its behavior because of you, then you're
too close. Take very slow steps backward and you just might convince the animal that it's safe enough to stay.
Strange as it sounds, most animals of the world assume that you're a
hunter who wants to eat them. If you want to see animals in the
wild, it's your job to convince the animals that you're safe to be

still‚ it's handy to pretend that you're a rock. If you have to move, to
scratch your nose for instance, move your hand very slowly.

Quiet is very important to wild animals. In the animal world, everything is either a hunter or prey. If it's a prey animal‚Äîan animal that

being heard and caught. If it's a hunting animal, it needs to keep quiet
so it can sneak up on its prey. In other words, nothing in the animal
world is noisy. Being noisy would ruin its chances of finding a good
meal or living another day, so of course animals are quiet! (Birds,
which are less likely to be caught, can risk singing loudly. Especially
when singing comes with another benefit‚ attracting a female bird.)
Of course, some wild animals can be very dangerous‚ too dangerous
to watch unless you're in a zoo or special wildlife sanctuary. Bears,
alligators, moose, bison, wolves, and all types of wild cats (lynx, bobcat, mountain lion, jaguars) are all animals you should only watch
when there are grown-ups with you. If you're out on your own and
you see one of these animals, leave right away and go tell a grown
up. There are safe ways to watch these animals, so if you're really
desperate to see one, tell your parents and they can help you see a
bear or a wolf in a safe place, where nothing bad can happen.
If you want to see animals, it's important that you be quiet, too. Animals will never come near somebody who's shouting or singing or
laughing loudly. To them, that sounds like trouble. If you're having a
hard time spotting any animals, try sitting down in one place and seeing how long you can keep quiet. Odds are that, before you're done,
you'll have spotted a wild creature of some kind.
In the springtime, you might come across baby animals and bird that
look like they've been abandoned. It's very important that you leave
these babies alone. Wild animals are excellent parents who know
what they're doing‚ they might be hiding nearby, waiting for you to go
away so they can return and take care of their babies. Other parents
hide their babies on purpose. Deer fawns, for instance, spend every
day sitting very quietly, waiting for their mothers return in the
evening. Sometimes baby birds that are learning to fly fall out of the
nest and land on the ground. If you find a bird like this, don't worry!
The parents will keep feeding the baby until it learns to fly.
Animals are most active in the early morning and at dusk. If you want
to see wildlife, you need to be out at that time of day, too. Compromise on this with your family. If they don't want to get up early, see if
