Soaps are mainly used as surfactants for washing and cleaning. They are also used in textile spinning and are important components of lubricant formulation or preparation. Soap can be made by mixing animal fats with lye. Before sodium hydroxide was available, lye (sodium hydroxide), potash (potassium hydroxide), and soda ash (sodium carbonate) were leached from the ashes of a hardwood fire for most of the home-made soap. Almost any fat or oil can be used to make soap. Fats for soap making include animal fats such as tallow, lard and various vegetable oils and hydrogenated fats. Coconut oil and tallow have long been the raw materials of choice in soap manufacturing. In South East Asia, soaps are primarily made from palm oil blended with either coconut oil or palm kernel oil. • Limited to 60 participants. • Participants must be fluent in English. Who should attend: Individuals from the industry who seek to broaden their knowledge in oleochemistry, especially in soap manufacturing technology.
