Perhaps you have noticed,
as I have, that there are a few
more seats available at Shabbat
services.
The auto transport
companies are loading up on
northbound cars, which tells
us that “season” is ending and
summer is on the way. In Florida,
rather than using a barometer, we
use the loading and unloading of
the cars to designate our seasons.
Here at Anshei Shalom however,
season is never over because we
continue to have something doing every day.
Speaking of seasons, many of you attended the season
finale of our “Anshei After Dark” series. Unbelievable!! It
was like the High Holy Day crowds, with over 600 people
having a wonderful time as they enjoyed a great evening
of entertainment. The series will continue the second
Wednesday of every month beginning in November.
Kudos to the committee for doing such an excellent job
producing this entertaining event.
Looking ahead, we continue with the program of
activities and entertainments that are the hallmark of TAS.
Many thanks to Larry Feinberg, our Lifelong Learning
Coordinator, for our new Spring - Summer Catalog of
programs and lectures. What better way to start the
week than to Learn to Pray with Genia Kutner, Monday
mornings at 10:30. We are busy every day, lectures
are given by learnered professionals and are available
every Monday afternoon at 1:30. Tuesday morning at
10:00 join Nora Gerson for Yoga. Meet a friend for lunch
and come back at 1:00 for Beginners Bridge with Dr.
Gladys Morse. Wednesday afternoon at 1:30, join us for
Movie of the Week. Get a good nights sleep so you are
well rested and ready for a smorgasbord of activities
that are available on Thursday: Hebrew Conversation
at 10:00 with Sara Ritzner, Beginners Bridge II at 1:00
and stimulating lectures at 1:30 given by experienced
Count Up!
We usually think in terms
of a countdown. 10, 9, 8, 7,
6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and blast off!
is the familiar NASA refrain
for awaiting an exciting event.
When we eagerly anticipate a
special occasion like a birthday,
anniversary, or vacation, we
count down the number of days
until our simcha occurs. But
when it comes to Counting the
Omer, the period between Passover and Shavuot, or
redemption to revelation, we reverse and count up.
For the Sefira daily count, we say today is the
the thirteenth day of the Omer. For the fourteenth,
today is the fourteenth day, etc. Why is the tradition
to go 1, 2, 3, since we are excited to inch ever closer
to Shavuot, the Festival of receiving the Torah?
We would presume a more traditional countdown
scenario.
Our sages inform us that indeed we anxiously
anticipate Shavuot. However, we count up because
each day represents a step on the road to Sinai.
We should see our 24 hour gift as an opportunity
for spiritual growth, and not just a means to an end
marking the days to our Holiday.
Life is best lived in the same manner. Rather
than while away our hours to the next celebration,
or family occasion in a restless manner, we should
live every day as a challenge to improve ourselves.
Each 24 hour period should not be spent living for
tomorrow and awaiting a future event. Rather our
precious time should be utilized deliberately.
Is there a class to take or a skill to master? Then
seize the moment today. What a fleeting miracle our
day represents, we should experience all it has to
offer, for tomorrow it will be gone.
The Omer count is an apt metaphor for living
wisely. If we can wake up in the morning with
anticipation for a new opportunity and conclude
our waking hours with the realization that we have
accomplished something important, than we have
indeed journeyed closer to Sinai then we were
yesterday.

Sisterhood’s May Bulletin

If you are surprised to discover this was
not written by Barbara Grau, you are not
alone. Unfortunately, Barbara had to resign as
Sisterhood President due to health reasons and
I, a Sisterhood Past President, stepped in to keep
us going. We will miss Barbara as President. She
is really special and we wish her a refuah slema.
Please come to our last meeting which is
in May. We dub this our Mother’s Day meeting.
It is always special and you are sure to enjoy it,
especially since we are having a wonderful singer
entertain us. Do you have ideas on program,
functions, fund raising, anything? Please share
your ideas with us. Don’t wait. Your suggestions
are always welcome, needed and greatly
appreciated. We are sisters in Sisterhood and
working together affords us the opportunity to
do good as well as meeting and making new
friends.
Have you seen the flyers in the carousel
describing Sisterhood functions? In July, we will
have a bus trip to Miami and an overnight to the
West Coast. Check them out.
I’m looking forward to seeing you at the

Men's Club Memorial Candles
The Men’s Club has for many years sent out Memorial Candles in time for
their lighting on Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day.
This year Yom Hashoah, 27 Nisan falls on Thursday, May 5th. We ask you to
light your candle on Wednesday evening just as you would light a Yahrzeit
candle for your dear departed ones. On this night the candle represents the
six million Jews murdered by the Nazis and the additional five million
others who perished.
These candles are being given by the Men’s Club. Any contribution that you
send to us will be used to continue this annual project.
Join our commitment to never forget this horrible tragedy. Join us in
lighting these yellow candles as a vivid reminder of what happened to our
people.

beings who acted like beasts; their lives were taken in cruelty.
May we recall not only the horror of their deaths, but the
splendor of their lives. May the memory of their lives inspire
us to hallow our own lives and to live meaningful Jewish lives
so that we may help to insure that part of who they were shall
endure always.

many talents, who has left an indelible mark on Temple

congregation. Witty, sharp, feisty, direct, passionate and
compassionate are but some words that partly describe
her. Right now she wants to be with her family and will be
leaving the area. I’m sure she knows she goes with the
love, admiration and respect of the entire congregation.

Jews- We are a wondrous people, talkative,
loud, argumentative, pushy,
assertive, generous to a
fault, community oriented
and every other adjective
you care to state. We are
beloved, detested, envied,
incomprehensible to the ”goyim”, everybody’s
“bad boy”, the one all love to hate. But we have
endured, thrived, rebuilt a destroyed people and
stubbornly refuse to die a natural or unnatural
death. We have seen more, experienced more,
endured more , given the world probably more
than they deserved and have been castigated
and hated because of it. And yet, mir zenem
du. We are Here. Loud, boisterous, even obnoxiously so. But today I address a different
issue and problem. Through the millennia, (did
I mention we are a very old/young people?there were Jews with what Menachim Begin
called Trembling Knees-a bit afraid to proclaim
their Judaism .They lost to Islam, a weak copy,
lost to Christianity, as a weak substitute. Lost
to a nether world of nothing-ness.. They gave
up and still do, a treasure of knowledge seeing
only groups of people arguing old arguments of
minutia. How sad, they miss the point: A group of
Jews sitting around a table involved in a disputewhat a concept! Bit of a novelty. Any argument
in the name of G-d, to further G-d’s name and
fame is a worthy argument. Probably the world’s
most famous and widely known would be the
dispute between Hillel and Shammai. As fiercely
as they argued for the Jewish soul, that is how
close they were as friends. Any argument in
the name of and advance of G-d’s name Is a
worthwhile and holy pursuit.
Look at all the fields dominated by great Jewish minds: Law, philosophy, cultural institutions,
charities, medicine. The world of philanthropy,
changing now, but by these Jews with trembling

Chavurah
Sisterhood
“Overnite Run-a-Way”
A Chavurah or havurah (Hebrew: "fellowship",
plural chavurot) is a small group of likeminded Jews who assemble for the purpose
of facilitating Shabbat and holiday prayer
services, sharing communal experiences such
as lifecycle events or Jewish learning.
A few years ago we were approached to
become members in a very small group of
people that wanted to start a Chavurah group.
My husband and I are very active people, but
it is always easier to say yes so we decided to
join the group and see if we wanted to add to
our many interests.
Needless to say, we have enriched our
lives even more with the additional friendships
we have attained in our Havarat Olam Group
and all that we have learned in our monthly
topics that we study for each meeting. We,
as a group, have supported many of the
Anshei Shalom activities and programs. We
have also been there for each other in need.
Our group has kept in touch when members
were in the hospital and later sent Shabbos
dinners to their home upon their return. We
have mourned at the loss of a member and
we have supporting the mate of one of our
members who is not well.
I have had the privilege of experiencing
a joyful expression of our group's caring
personalities. We meet on a monthly basis
and this last meeting just happened to be on
my birthday. The hostess said, "This will be a
celebration ", and so it was. Our meeting at
her house was a luncheon where she made a
wonderful entrée and each member brought a
different dish. Even the visiting children, my
daughter and someone's son, were invited.
I mentioned this to someone at the
synagogue and she said she was not aware
that we had Havarat's. I am now purposely
writing this so that perhaps others will form
their own Havarat's and experience the same
togetherness that we have achieved with our
group.

Ritual
The Counting of the Omer, a 50 day preparation time (considered a mitzvah) for
growth and personal introspection started the second day of Passover, 1st day of
Omer.
There are restrictions during this time: no weddings, no music, no haircuts or
shaving. The Talmud tells us that Rabbi Akiva had 24,000 students who tragically died
during the Omer period because they did not treat each other with sufficient respect.
Therefore, for 33 days, until Lag B’Omer, (18 day of Iyar / 33rd day Omer ) we observe
these restrictions.
We cleared our homes of leaven and matzohed our way through the week-long
Passover to recognize a Second Passover (Sunday, May 22). In Numbers 9:6-7,
G-d established Pesach Shemi, a second Passover for those unable to attend the first
Passover offering the previous month. It is said that this Teshuvah, second chance,
allows the power of repentance and “return”, suggesting that the Second Passover
means that there is never a “lost case”.
It is during this time that we should look for the best way to treat our family,
friends, and new acquaintances, so that we may make a “tikkun” (spiritual correction)
on the mistakes of the past.
Please join us to commemorate Lag BaOmer, (18 day of Iyar / 33rd day Omer)
on Tuesday, May 26th and smile, say good morning to strangers, wish people at our
Temple a good day when you pass them and take a moment to ask about their health
or their family.
This holiday also marks the date of the death of Talmudic sage, Rabbi Shimon
Bar Yochai. It is a celebration because tradition has it that on his death bed, Rabbi
Shimon revealed the secrets of the Zohar, the book of Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah).
In Israel, on this one day, it is estimated that 250,000 people visit Rabbi Shimon’s
grave in the Galilee town of Meiron. Around Israel, they dance, pray and some camp
out for days before Lag B’Omer.
