There is an old African proverb
that says, “It takes a village to
raise a child.” Here at KMS we are
beyond fortunate to have AfterThe-Bell as part of our village! The
opportunities provided through
ATB that help to strengthen the
academic, personal, and social skills
of our students are priceless.

About Our Program
In February 2015, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform announced that Kennett Middle School–
which has graciously hosted the After-The-Bell program since we were founded in 1998–was named a School to
Watch. The board and staff at the Kennett After-School Association were deeply honored to be informed that AfterThe-Bell was cited one of the top reasons for this prestigious national designation.
The designation is awarded to middle schools that are academically excellent, developmentally responsive, and socially equitable.
This is the second time that the middle school has been named as a School To Watch. The National Forum determined
that After-The-Bell, available to every child attending Kennett Middle School at no cost, was a vital contributing factor that
helped the school meet their criteria for high performance.
Each year, approximately 200 volunteers join After-The-Bell to facilitate activities for an estimated 300 students. We offer
three six-week cycles in the Fall, Winter, and Spring and operate on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. Students
choose from an extraordinary array of opportunities that include activities in science, reading, writing, music, art, sports,
cooking, community service, and homework help. In addition to onsite activities, After-The-Bell features many programs at
the locations of some of our community partners, including the Kennett YMCA, New Garden Airport, the Chester County
Technical College High School, Kennett Design, Coverdale Farms, and The Land Conservancy.
The dedication of our volunteers at After-The-Bell is the key to our success and they should feel proud of the role they
played in the honor that was bestowed on Kennett Middle School. For 16 years, our volunteers have made it possible for
more than 4,000 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to have safe, structured and meaningful after school activities. We are humbled
that the Forum recognized the unique benefits of this program for the local school community and the families that live in
the Kennett Consolidated School District.

A c t i v i t y H i g h l i g h t s 2 01 4 – 2 015
2014–15 was an amazing and memorable year for everyone involved
in the Kennett After-School Association and After-The-Bell!
National School To Watch
4-H Pony Partners
When the National Forum for Middle
School Grades Reform named the Kennett
Middle School to be a National School
to Watch in the Winter of 2015, we
were bursting with pride to learn that the
After-The-Bell program, offered onsite at
the school, was cited as one of the top
reasons for this prestigious designation.
A partnership with 4-H Penn Extension
makes it possible for our students to
become Pony Partners and learn about
the care and feeding of these lovely and
gentle creatures. 4-H representatives
actually bring ponies onsite to Kennett
Middle School to provide our students
with a wonderful learning experience.
Volunteer Appreciation
Future Aviators
Thanks to a new collaboration with
New Garden Airfield, we are now
able to offer After-The-Bell students
a chance to take off for the skies... in
flight simulators. Our new Future
Aviators program puts students in
the pilot’s seat and teaches them
about the science of aviation.
Keeping Fit
Volunteers are the lifeblood of
After-The-Bell. Approximately 200
people, including current and retired
educators, scientists, nutritionists,
musicians, as well as college and
high school students, volunteer
each year to provide a wonderful
experience for our students. 99%
of students found our volunteers to be kind and caring, and 100% of
our volunteers said they had a positive experience at After-The-Bell.
Mushroom Festival
After-The-Bell offers many active
programs that are very popular with
students who like to get out and move
after a long school day. These activities
include Running Club, Soccer,
Kickball, Basketball, Tennis, First
Tee Golf and Outdoor Fun & Games.
The Kennett After-School
Association is grateful
for the support of the
Mushroom Festival and
is proud to participate in
the annual celebration.
Celebrating the Arts
Be The First to Know
With so many volunteers and
collaborators that share a passion
for the Arts, our students have
wonderful opportunities to learn
about painting, music, dance, and
other forms of artistic expression.
Arts programs in 2014-15 included
Arts & Crafts, Dance Fever, Glee,
Paint for Fun at Kennett Design, Guitar, and Scrapbooking.
Forget video games, our students
love to read! A new collaboration
with the Hockessin Book Club
enables our students to Be The
First To Know, providing them
with a first-look at middleschool appropriate books not yet
released to the public. Students
have the chance to write reviews of the books for their peers.
Brain Base
Community Service
The one activity that is offered
every hour of every day of every
cycle of After-The-Bell, Brain
Base makes a real difference in the
academic success of our students.
Last year, 100% of participating
students said that Brain Base helped
them complete their homework
on time, and 92% said this gave them greater self-confidence.
After-The-Bell students have the
opportunity to learn about the
vital importance of responsible
citizenship and being good stewards
of our land and resources. Activities
that promoted community service
in 2014-15 included Warm
Heads, Hands and Hearts,
The Land Conservancy, Cops, and Project Alert. Students
also made bowls for Kennett Square’s ‘Empty Bowls’ fundraiser.

From the Board
After-The-Bell is starting its seventeenth year - and it’s better than ever. This Fall Cycle we welcomed hundreds of students
from the Kennett Middle School who signed up for exciting activities in a safe and enriching environment. We continue to
follow the vision of our Founders by offering outstanding programs, both at the middle school and in the community, at
no cost to any student or family. Healthy snacks are provided and transportation home is available to all who attend.
Students who participate in After-the-Bell tell us that the activities are fun, they have an opportunity to make new friends,
and they learn new skills and passions from our dedicated volunteers. Each year, approximately 200 adults, college students,
and high school students devote their time, their expertise, and their energy to make a difference in the lives of our students.
And parents appreciate the comfort of knowing that their youngsters are safe and having fun, not sitting at home alone.
Through the generosity of caring individuals, our community partners, grants from foundations, and the leadership of
dedicated Board members and staff, we have been able to serve more than 4,000 students since we were founded in 1998.
Please review the contents of this Annual Report to learn more about our program and the success we have achieved over
the years. Should you wish to volunteer, feel free to contact us. We are grateful for your support and your generosity.
