TRAINING TOOLS Featuring: Exselle® and Snuggie® Blankets // Designed, produced and distributed exclusively by Intrepid International The Blanket Boom 2 ¨ ¨ There are over 9 million horses in the US and a majority of them are used for pleasure/leisure purposes. These companion horses are viewed much differently than in the 1900s, when used mainly for transportation or labor. This evolution has resulted in an increased use of blankets, as the majority of horse owners utilize at least one type of blanket for their horse(s)whether it be a turnout blanket, stable blanket, fly sheet and/or coolers Intrepid International Photocredit: www.colorbox.com Blankets Demystified-Waterproofing 3 ¨ ¨ What About Waterproofing? Waterproofing is measured by the amount of pressure it takes to force water through the material. Generally, heavy rain is not sufficient to cause waterproofed blankets to leak, although pressure points (such as the shoulder) may have a problem after time. To be waterproof, the material must contain a barrier that blocks water from penetrating the fabric from the outside. This is accomplished in one of two ways: ¤ Laminates- Solid layers of a material that are glued to the inside of another material, such as nylon. The laminating process is generally more durable over time and is Intrepid’s preferred process. ¤ Coating-The other method is managed by coating the outer surface of the material. Breathability Rating: The first rating is breathability. To be breathable, materials must have a way for the sweat produced inside the blanket to escape to the outside. This can be accomplished in two ways: n Larger Pores- The waterproofed membrane is full of pores that are large enough for sweat vapor to pass through. To ensure that these pores are not too large to allow rain to pass through, the membrane is chemically treated so that water is repelled before it has a chance to penetrate through the material. n Monolithic Membranes- This barrier will move moisture through a process of solid-state diffusion. The sweat will collect on the surface of the membrane and pass through the material, from areas of high concentration to the outside of the blanket. This is the method used by most blanket manufacturers. Waterproof Rating: This rating is measured by the amount of pressure it takes to force water through the material. The trick is to balance the ratings of breathability and waterproofing. Generally speaking, the higher the breathable/waterproof ratings, the more expensive the blanket will be. The primary driving factor for moving sweat from the horse’s body is the difference in humidity between the inside of the blanket and the outside environment. So, the higher the relative humidity is inside the blanket and the lower humidity on the outside, the greater the blanket’s breathability. Higher humidity on the inside + lower humidity on the outside = greater breathability. As a result, horse blankets breathe best in cold, dry environments. Conversely, they perform poorly when temperatures and humidity rise. So what does this mean to a horse owner? How you use a horse blanket is often more important than the material itself. Even the most advanced waterproof / breathable materials will never be able to transport all of the moisture a horse can produce during rising temperatures, in direct sunlight or if running in a pasture. Intrepid International Blankets Demystified- Insulation 6 q ¨ The Skinny on Synthetic Fill Fibers: This fiber is the preferred insulation for a variety of reasons: q Water resistant and able to shed water rather than absorb q Dries quickly q Machine washable- easy and inexpensive to care for q Hypoallergenic q Lightweight and flexible, allowing for the blanket to drape nicely over the horse However, it must be noted that synthetic fiber fills will breakdown over time. Insulation Fill Warmth Sheet- No Fill Protection from wind and rain 100 Gram Fill Light Warmth 150 Gram Fill Light/Medium Warmth 200 Gram Fill Medium Warmth 250 Gram Fill Medium/Heavy Warmth 300 Gram Fill Heavy Warmth 400 Gram Fill Extra Heavy Warmth Intrepid International 7 ¨ ¨ Blankets Demystified- Insulation and Color The Color Concern: Why should I care about color? Light carries energy and colored cloth that absorbs light will also absorb energy. Absorbed energy becomes thermal energy and will thus affect the temperature of insulation. In brief, black materials will absorb almost all transmitted light, while white materials absorb little light and are considered a cooler material. All other colors fall in between- the darker the color, the more heat that will be generated. Intrepid International Blankets Demystified- Denier 8 ¨ ¨ ¨ Den-Who? Denier refers to the Weight Denier weight (not the strength) of an Very Light 210 Weight individual fiber that is used in creating a fabric. Light Weight 420 Thus, a higher denier count does not Medium Weight 600 indicate a stronger fabric but rather Heavy Weight 1200 a heavier and more coarse fabric. Fabric strength and/or abrasion Extra Heavy 1680 resistance are achieved by molecular Weight manipulation. This manipulation refers Super Heavy 2100 Weight to how the manufacturer stretches, weaves or spin theses fibers. These Note: 1000 denier nylon is considered to be the strongest fabric available. Intrepid International 9 ① ② ③ ④ ⑤ Measuring For A Blanket in 5 Easy Steps Make sure your horse is on a flat surface and standing as square as possible. Grab a flexible tape measure and place one end of your tape measure at the center of the horse’s chest, over the high point of the shoulder. Hold the tape measure in place and run it alongside the horse’s body until you reach the rear of the hind leg. It’s best to have a someone to help you with this part. Your total measurement in inches should equal a blanket size. If not, simply round up to the next available size. Honestly for the price-you can't shake a stick at this sturdy, warm stable blanket! The 64" fits our medium pony as expected with no rubs, is super thick and cozy for his semi-clipped self. I would happily purchase more of this brand, and am very pleased with this purchase. “ –K. Millan “We bought this for an elderly Welsh pony that is having trouble keeping weight up and growing his winter coat this year. It seems very comfortable for him, he could move around easily in it and did not seem bothered by it at all. It is thick enough to provide a good amount of relief from the harsh weather but also light enough that it will not be burdensome to the pony. We were impressed with how easy it was to get on and off. Great product!”Victoria L. Miller “Best Stable Blanket EVER! This is a fantastic stable blanket! Arrived faster than expected too. Great quality and fit. Very warm for my indoor show horse. I had been using a blanket liner with my old stable blanket and had to take it off because this blanket is so nice, heavy and warm! Would do business again with these suppliers!”- Brita Intrepid International Bonus- Business Tip 17 ¨ Be sure to book your blankets!
