The Museum brings technology to children’s fingertips with computers, microscopes and interactive exhibits. Mount Charleston / Junior Ranger Volunteer Program Friday, July 24 | Mount Charleston is located within the Spring Mountains near Las Vegas, Nevada. This beautiful area of Las Vegas got its name from the many natural springs in the area. Here in the high country you’ll find a forested oasis and relief from the Mojave Desert heat of southern Nevada. Campers will go on a morning hike and view the far away flat lands where terrain is pock marked from the nuclear test grounds used in the late 50’s. Campers will become junior rangers and learn about the fragile and unique ecosystem that surrounds them. Some of this vegetation found in this area and is nowhere else on the earth. Ranger Cody will ask for our help and we will participate in a community service project right there on the mountain. Saturday, July 25 | Springs Preserve This is one of Las Vegas’s newest attraction. Springs Preserve focuses on the land’s past, present, and future. At the Nevada State Museum come face to face with an Ichthyosaur, crawl through a stalactite cave, and witness an atomic explosion. At the Origen Museum experience a simulated flash flood, one of the preserve’s most popular exhibit. This theater space recreates a desert ravine, emulating the beauty and tranquility of the desert until a thundering storm erupts. Suddenly, more than 5,000 gallons of recycled water rushes through a simulated canyon, crashing around and below your feet. Both exhilarating and educational. At the Sustainability Gallery children will learn what that means and how they can incorporate that into their daily lives. Campers will have been recycling throughout the week. This exhibit will tie the week in and campers will discover and discuss all the ways that they were sustainable during the past week.
