The Barnacle - Three Tree Point Yacht Club
The Barnacle January 2012 Three Tree Point Yacht Club is an affordable family boating club that promotes enjoyment, appreciation, and care of the waters of Puget Sound. TTPYC Calendar of Events 2012 The Commodore's Corner January 7 10 21 28 7 11 18 25 Welcome to the next year of your precious life! I trust that this promising new year finds you feeling hopeful, energetic, and Duwamish Head Race (SSS2) creative. As I sit at my rocker (yes, Grandma’s got a rocker now!) I marvel at the beauty of a General Membership Meeting sunset, the grace of a gentle breeze, and wonder why I am QuarterMaster Harbor not on my boat! I know it is still (Windjammer/Harbor-1a bit chilly out there but, trust CYC-T) me, spring is coming! I also Blake Island Race, hope your vessel’s health is (Windjammer/Harbor -2) checking out well. Remember February to check your bilge...Ray and I are grateful that we didn’t wait General Membership Meeting too long to find out if ours was working! This is a good time to Toliva Shoal Race (OYC-SSSget sails repaired or upgraded. 3) Is your rigging secure? Is it Gig Hrbr Race, time to speak to an expert (Windjammer/Harbor3-CYC-T)about your concerns before you get that gorgeous creature Manzanita Buoy Race out on the water rather that (Windjammer/Hbr-4) tied to a dock. March 13 30 . General Membership Dinner Social/Meeting* Our club’s plans this year are shaping up beautifully thanks to the hard work of Joan Marie (Social), Ray V (cruise), Gordon K-M, Blake Island Cruise & Crab Feed Shelley C, and Steve F (racing), and Tom H (Boats for Beds). Kersten H will hold her first Mid Sound Summer Social Planning meeting later this month, on the 24th, and many of you will be invited to assist. Please tell Kersten YES when she calls. Our able trustees (Dave K, Doug A, Tim Mc, Don B, and Jerry S) along with our Officers (Laura C, Caroline Mc, Dave G) are meeting each month in order to be sure that TTPYC is ready to roll as soon as racing and cruising is feasible. Which brings to mind Duwamish Head, this Saturday, January 7. So many of you have offered to help, which warms my heart, and allows Shelly and Gordon to sleep at night. Thank you! Club Cruising begins in March. Mark your calendars now. Doug and Sharon A, our membership chairs, are preparing some new tools for building membership. As soon as these are available, we will share them with you and ask for your help in inviting visitors to our club events. Hey! You could invite someone to our January 11 dinner/social at Angelo's (see inside for details). Our general meeting in February is also open to visitors (note that the date for this one week early so as not to interfere with Valentine’s Day.) Inviting someone new to a social event is a fun way to demonstrate that our “emphasis is on fun.” Consider referring interested visitors to our Web Site, also, so they can learn even more (thanks to Mike E). Speaking of fun, please notice that the Des Moines Parks Department is already promoting Youth Sailing Programs. We have a task force who has been meeting with Marina and Park Department officials to see what our club involvement might include. When you see any of our officers or trustees please take a moment to thank them and ask how you might be able to assist. Maybe you have an afternoon to spare or a talent to share? When we share projects we connect in new ways to our boating community. I look forward to seeing you at our January dinner/social and--very soon--out on the water! Yours, Debra Valpey Social Corner Joan Marie, Chair To kick off our 2012 dinner social schedule, we will be having dinner 6pm Tuesday night, January 10 2012 at one of our favorite local spots with a great menu, Angelo's! http://www.angelosofburien.com/ Angelo's address is: 601 SW 153rd Street, Burien Washington. And in case you haven't heard, our first guest of the new year will be the one and only Andy Schwenk, owner of Northwest Rigging! http://www.northwestrigginginc.com/index.cfm Many of us saw Andy at the Seattle Boat Shows, a local yacht race, or maybe even have seen his mobile rigging truck at Des Moines Marina. Well this time he is coming to dinner to entertain us! Bring your best rigging questions and be ready to have a lovely time. :D Joan Marie Social Chair Three Tree Point Yacht Club 206-755-7648 ttpyc.org Race Fleet Corner GORDON KELLS-MURPHY Race Fleet Captain STEVEN FOSS Assistant Race Fleet Captain Calling all members! The Race Fleet is in need of people and boats to help with Race Committee duties. We still have several events that do not have a commitment for a Race Committee and boat. We are desperately trying to get as many racing boats out on the water as possible, and it would be a great help to have some members from our club step up and participate in our activities. Being Race Committee is an exciting and rewarding experience. You get front row seats to both starts and finishes of the races you officiate and it is a very legitimate excuse to go mess around on a boat. Call Gordon Kells-Murphy at 253-529-3188 if you would like to participate, either by helping with your own boat or by helping someone else on theirs. Special Announcement! As Race Fleet Captain for the Three Tree Point Yacht Club I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Mark Harang as our new PHRF NW Handicapper representative for our club. We have discussed Mark's appointment in previous Board meetings and it was accepted that if Mark agreed to accept this position that we would be thrilled. Mark has graciously agreed to become our Club's Handicapper and accept all of the responsibilities that this position demands. As Race Fleet Captain , I am announcing that Mark Harang has duly received the appointment of the Three Tree Point Yacht Club to represent PHRF NW's handicapping to our club.
