Congratulations and break a leg! Project Limelight is a performing arts program offered at no cost to young people living in and around Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Project Limelight encourages children to look inside themselves, discover their inner strengths, explore their hidden talents, and form lasting friendships. Above all, Project Limelight is about providing opportunities to young people, who are inspired to perform! A Message from Donalda & Maureen Welcome! We’re so excited to share with you this very special performance of Mirror, Mirror, performed by 18 young Project Limelight participants, ages 8 to 13 years old. This production represents the final leg of a four month journey that began with a short performance at The Heart of The City Festival and ends here, in front of hundreds of friends, family, and supporters. On behalf of our Board Members and everyone at Project Limelight Society we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the following individuals, organizations and their representatives for their strong belief in community and for their generous support and enthusiasm for Project Limelight – Am Johal and Vancity’s Office of Community Engagement, SFU Woodward’s, Central City Foundation, Vancouver Foundation, Telus Vancouver Community Board, Ron Suzuki and the staff at Strathcona Community Centre, Vancity, Elena Kirschner, and everyone at East of Main Cafe. Special thanks to Jodi Jacyk and her team who once again designed and created our beautiful costumes and Mark Pilon for providing his beautiful artwork for our gorgeous poster and design for the production. Thanks to all of our volunteers who gave their time and shared their expertise to help make Mirror, Mirror a huge success! Katie, Blossom, Caitlin and Jessica, all SFU students, were amazing and dedicated young mentors to our participants. As always, thanks to Tami Nasu for her ongoing dedication to Project Limelight and her hard work coordinating our program sponsorship and volunteers for the production. Thanks to Karelyn for designing our beautiful program and to Staples for donating the printing costs. Special thanks to our wonderful director, Paul Belanger, who returned to guide our young cast and brought along his enthusiasm and energy, inspiring them to believe that they were capable of doing anything they set their mind to. From painting sets to performing with the kids, Paul worked overtime to ensure the show was a success. Joining Paul was an amazing group of individuals who gave their time, energy and boundless talent to make this show possible. Thank-you Christache, Barb, Jillian, Chersea, Anna, Sarah and Kirsten. We couldn’t have done this without you, and we are so very grateful for everything you’ve contributed. We are so incredibly proud of each of our young Limelight participants, and thrilled you have gathered with us to celebrate their success. Their journey has been incredibly rewarding, and we congratulate each and every one of them for working hard and never giving up on their dreams. This is a professionally shot and edited special edition DVD featuring the entire performance, backstage footage, credits, and audience interviews. A great keepsake for friends, family and fans. Only $15.00. Our Cast Saskia ~ GROUCHY / BAKER ~ is 9 years old, has a cat and a dog, and enjoys swimming, dancing and singing. She hopes one day to be a choreographer, dancer or singer. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is meeting new friends. Neena ~ PRINCE FREDERICK /TOWNSFOLK ~ is 11 years old, and hopes one day to be a film director, special effects artist or actress. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is meeting the professionals who give the workshops and working with all the volunteers. Ombu ~ SNOW WHITE ~ is 9 years old, speaks French, Italian and Spanish and hopes one day to be a geologist or start a daycare. She has a cat named Mouffette, and enjoys collecting rocks and minerals, acting, paper art, and jewelry making. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is the singing and dancing. Sidney ~ STINKWORT ~ is 9 years old, speaks French, and enjoys playing board and card games, reading and playing piano. His favourite part of Project Limelight is the improv and acting games. Sidney has been involved with Limelight since the first production. Ronan ~ DANNY DUMPLING /TREE ~ is 8 years old, enjoys reading and drawing and hopes one day to be an astrophysicist, inventor or actor. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is that she gets to do so many new things. This is Ronan’s first production with Project Limelight. Celestine ~ WONDERWINGS / MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT ~ is 13 years old, and enjoys singing and dancing. Born in Tanzania, she also speaks Swahili. She hopes to pursue a career as an actor, singer and dancer, and currently attends Britannia High School. Celestine enjoys working with Chersea and Barb on the music for this production. Nico ~ SNOOZY /BUTCHER ~ is 9 years old and has a cat, a hamster and a fish. She likes to play piano and make origami. Her favourite part about Project Limelight is that she really likes to act and perform on stage, but never got to do it before. Project limelight gave her that opportunity. Nikita ~ BLACK WING ~ is 10 years old, was born in Israel and speaks Russian. He likes parkour, art and skiing. He hopes one day to be a Stunt Man and an actor. His favourite part of Project Limelight is acting and meeting new friends. Chlose ~ SNIFFLY /CANDLESTICK MAKER ~ is 10 years old, and was born in Toronto, Ontario. She speaks French and enjoys doing arts and crafts, singing, dancing and acting. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is seeing her friends. This is Chlose’s first production with Project Limelight. Nina ~ SPEAK TRUE /TREE ~ is 12 years old, and was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She enjoys drawing, piano and making bracelets. She hopes one day to be an author or actress. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is feeling included and working together on this production. Liza ~ GOOFY /BLACKSMITH ~ is 8 years old, and was born in Russia. She speaks Russian and hopes one day to be a Doctor. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is acting, singing and playing games. This is Liza’s first production with Project Limelight, and she follows in the footsteps of her older brother, Stas, who was in 2 shows. Lilianna (Lili) ~ DOLLY DUMPLING /TREE ~ is 10 years old and has 2 puppies, Cowboy and Mini. Lili speaks French and her hobbies include pageants, acting, choir, chess and fashion. She hopes one day to be a make-up artist or actress. She loves everything about Project Limelight. Ostara ~ FAIRY GOODHEART /TREE ~is 9 years old, and has a cat named Sweet Pea. She enjoys writing books, making films, drawing and acting. She hopes to become an author and an artist. Ostara’s favourite part of Project Limelight is interacting with others and the acting. Ostara has participated in every Limelight production. Hunter ~ BOGWORT ~is 11 years old, and has two pet snakes, Houdini and Bellatrix. He enjoys making movies, writing, gymnastics and snowboarding. One day Hunter hopes to be an actor and movie director. His favourite part of Project Limelight is making friends and meeting new people. Keona ~ HONK /JESTER ~is 8 years old, and his hobbies include playing video games, making stop motion animation, doing art and acting. Keona hopes one day to be a scientist and make the best inventions ever. His favourite part of Project Limelight is learning how to act and making new friends. Zoe ~ CHEERY /TAILOR ~is 10 years old and loves to spend time cuddling her 3 cats and dog while knitting or drawing. She hopes one day to be a Veterinarian. Her favourite part of Project Limelight is acting and hanging out with her friends. This is Zoe’s first time performing with Project Limelight. Donna ~ BOSSY /LIBRARIAN ~is 12 years old and speaks French, Spanish and Tagalog. She hopes one day to be a Doctor so she can help her parents when they get older. Donna’s favourite thing about Project Limelight is that she is surrounded by people who love and care for her, and that makes her happy. Sierra ~ QUEEN EVILYNNE ~is 12 years old and enjoys acting, singing, make-up and nail art. She has hopes of a career in the Culinary Arts. This is Sierra’s first production with Project Limelight and her favourite part is working on the whole play. Our Crew Directors Paul Belanger ~ DIRECTOR ~Paul Belanger has worked as a director for over 20 years, starting with the Cowichan Kids Theatre Troupe in the town of Duncan BC. Paul’s production took his cast to Main Stage 1998, which won Best Director, and the opportunity to receive professional adjudication at Main Stage in Kelowna. Paul helmed Nanaimo’s Red Room Studio’s children’s theatre program for two years and continued to direct with CKTT, until he moved to Costa Rica in 2005. There he formed Beach Nuts Theatre, a successful theatre company, which produces year round theatre in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. In 2012 he was invited to come to Vancouver B.C. to direct the first Project Limelight production of ‘Wonderland’, at SFU Woodward’s. “Working with Limelight is something I will cherish forever. Enjoy the show.” Christache Ross ~ ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, WRITER, ASM ~Christache has been a professional actor for 17 years and has been mentoring and teaching children of all ages for 10 years. This is his third season with Project Limelight, previously serving as writer and director on ‘There’s No Place Like Oz’ and ‘Project Limelight Goes Vaudeville’ and as assistant director on ‘Wonderland’. He is often found performing with the Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret, a multi-media theatre company he co-founded. Most recently he toured with the play ‘Hard Times Hit Parade’. He loves sharing his passion for performance with the kids of Project Limelight, who never cease to inspire, impress and make him laugh. Kirsten Sadeghi-Yekta Broekman ~ ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ~Kirsten has been working as a practitioner and lecturer in theatre for many years internationally. She recently submitted her PhD on theatre and aesthetics in developing countries and war zones. She enjoys spending time with her family, loves coconut brownies and travelling to undiscovered islands. The Project Limelight community has given her many wonderful moments, inspiration and lovely encounters. Barb Olson ~ MUSICAL DIRECTOR, MUSICIAN ~Barb grew up in North Vancouver and studied music and was involved in theatre and the arts from a young age. After attending the Capilano University Commercial Music Program, she discovered an interest in animation and worked as a Production Manager for Walt Disney Animation in Canada and Australia. After returning to Canada, Barb rediscovered her love for music and currently plays keyboards and sings in two professional rock bands. This is Barb’s second opportunity to work with Project Limelight, and it is with pleasure that she shares her love and knowledge of singing and music with this amazing team. Passion, Passion, Passion! Chersea ~ SOUND AND MUSIC DESIGN / MUSICIAN ~Chersea is a 23 year old musician who has played with several bands at the renowned Railway Club, The Horseshoe Tavern (Toronto), and The Media Club. Earlier this year, Chersea entered the Boss Loop Station Contest, and found herself in Toronto competing for first, in which she got the title of Best Looper in Canada (2013). You can find Chersea performing all over the lower mainland while she prepares for her first EP release entitled “Grey Matter” which is a highly anticipated project that is dated to be released in late January 2014. She aims to inspire all people to dream big dreams by her live performance while managing eight plus instruments and their effects; just to show them that if you can put your mind to it anything is possible. Anna Ma ~ STAGE MANAGER ~Anna is a graduate of of Simon Fraser University. She is very excited to be working with Project Limelight again. Anna can’t wait for the audience to see what the lovely, talented kids of Limelight have been working so hard on. She feels lucky to have met and got the chance to work with such an amazing group of people. Working with Project Limelight is like any Stage Manager’s dream! She couldn’t have asked for a better team! Jillian Walchuk ~ CHOREOGRAPHER ~Jillian has spent her entire life dancing, studying theatre and working in film and TV. She is dedicated to pursuing anything that ignites creativity and builds community. She has trained for over ten years in various acting methods. She is finishing her degree in Theatre at Simon Fraser University and loves working behind the scenes with Project Limelight! Jillian is inspired by this group’s dedication and incredible amount of joy they bring to the process. “I feel very privileged to do what I am so passionate about and to be able to share my love for it with an amazing group of kids.” James Kokol ~ LIGHTING DESIGNER ~James Kokol is a freelance designer and technician in Vancouver, and co-creator of Lost Light Productions. He likes creating original and transformative art with a strong focus on collaborating with performers from inception. James Kokol has a background in fine arts, beginning with audio engineering and acting; however, his focus settled on production management, technical directing, and lighting design. Whilst finishing up his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre Production and Design at Simon Fraser University, he continues in his field working with his fellow artists. Jodi Jacyk ~ COSTUME DESIGNER ~Jodi has worked in professional theatre wardrobes for longer than she can remember. Locally, she has worked for Ballet BC, Bard on the Beach, the Vancouver Playhouse and the Arts Club in addition to dabbling in the movies every now and then. Currently, Jodi spends her time aloft in her ivory tower as the Head of Wardrobe for the University of British Columbia’s Department of Theatre and Film. Lily Blazich ~ ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER ~Lily, 13, is a former Project Limelight participant who volunteered to work backstage on Mirror, Mirror. She attends Grage 8 at Templeton High School and hopes one day to be an attorney. “My favorite thing about Project Limelight is how people come together, and become a sort of family just because of a shared interest. I have become friends with people who I would never have even spoken to through this program, and I think its amazing how quickly everyone becomes so close.” Mark Atomos Pilon ~ SET DESIGN, POSTER DESIGN ~Mark Pilon; better known as Atomos, is a painter, illustrator, and designer working in Vancouver’s Chinatown. He’s illustrated for many magazines, and is exhibiting in museums, and galleries worldwide.
