In Memoriam
Please join us in remembering these special men who gave so much to the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival.
Actor, comedian, and philanthropist George S.
Lindsey
faculty members to create the George Lindsey
UNA Film Festival in 1998. His goal was to bring
and throughout the Shoals community.
Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012) was a long-time
between Borgnine and UNA. Just four months
before his death, Borgnine was at UNA for the
dedication of the “Ernest Borgnine Performance
Hall” in the new “George S. Lindsey Theatre.”
His many gifts to UNA include nearly 100 movie
and television scripts, including his script for
“Marty.”
Bill Foster (1939-2012)
UNA alum Heath Bain (1981-2012) was a talented guitarist and songwriter who performed at
the 2011 and 2012 Lindsey Film Festival Awards
Shows. Heath and his wife Melissa traveled the
country on the Soles4 Souls University RV Tour
engaged in the organization’s mission Tour helping the needy.
was a professor of English
at UNA for 39 of his 44year teaching career. During his tenure, he served
as chair of the department
of English, chair of the
department of foreign
languages and director
of the center for English
learning. Foster retired
from UNA in 2007. He
was an important member
of the Lindsey Film Festifor many years.

time in the festival’s history that
our founder, namesake, and ohso-special friend George Lindsey
will not be on hand to welcome
the event he loved so much. If
you have been to the Lindsey
Festival in the past, you will
probably share our sense that
something is missing from the
celebration this year.
Indeed, George’s passing last
spring left a large empty place
in the many lives he touched
through the years. Since last
year’s festival, we also lost
George’s best buddy and a great
friend of the festival, Ernest
Borgnine, as well as Heath
Bain, the very talented and inspirational UNA Alum and friend who
performed at our last two festival awards shows.
George would now be cracking a joke to reverse the too-serious
to Professional Narrative, and we hope you will take the opportunity
to see as many as possible. For the past few years we have also staged
a table reading of the winning short and feature-length screenplays,
which have become very popular events!
We’re also very honored and excited to be hosting the Alabama
public premiere of the acclaimed documentary, “Muscle Shoals.” The
movie sold out each of its performances at Sundance, so we know it
is going to be a smash hit during its “homecoming” weekend. The

On behalf of the University of North Alabama, welcome to the 16th George Lindsey
UNA Film Festival.
As you are all aware, the festival’s namesake and our dear friend George Lindsey
passed away last May. Over the intervening
months our grief has been replaced by fond
memories and there remains for us a legacy
that includes this festival, the George S.
Lindsey Theatre, and memorabilia from decades of George’s career, keeping his life and
the joy he brought to his fans, alive forever.

for our audiences.
It is truly an honor for UNA to host the
Alabama public premiere of the acclaimed
documentary “Muscle Shoals” at this year’s
festival. So much of the rich, cultural
heritage of the Shoals is found in the story
personalities who put Muscle Shoals music
on the map.
We are also pleased to welcome Mary Ellen
Iatropoulos, the Director of Education at the
Children’s Media Project in New York. It was
always important to George Lindsey that
wish with the workshop Ms. Iatropoulos will
conduct on Friday with area middle schoolers.

I hope you take some time to enjoy our
beautiful campus during your visit to UNA.
The new George S. Lindsey Theater has
opening at least year’s festival, and our twin
African lions, Leo and UNA, continue to
thrive. In the past year we have also broken
ground on the new Academic Commons
building, which should be completed and
ready for visitors by next year’s festival.
Welcome again, and I look forward to seeing you during the festival.

A
nthony’s passion for the
cinematic arts started
early. At age 15 he bought
a used Nikkormat camera with a
24mm lens from a consignment
window from Boulevard camera
in Santa Monica, Ca. For the next
5 years if you saw Anthony, you
saw that camera strapped around
his shoulder. From action shots at

was in that great city that Anthony
learned of so many ways life can
be seen and interpreted. With so
many world class museums and
professors at hand, and a city
together, it came natural that his
camera started to see the world as
a much bigger place.
Growing up in Malibu, California surrounded by the industry,
it was probably inevitable that
Anthony would migrate from stills
to the cinematic arts of the HolStarting as a runner at a commercial production company, to
assistant, camera operator, to a

passion for the photographic arts
translated perfectly to the cinematic.
Through the years Anthony has
been fortunate to learn from some
of Hollywood’s greatest cinematographers and directors.
From one very lucky phone call
to a chance meeting with James
Cameron, Anthony was selected to
be the virtual, and live action camera operator on the mega hit AVATAR. For over 3 1/2 years Anthony
worked side by side Cameron,
from the very beginning, to the
very end of production. “ It was
overwhelming at times. Everyone
around me had at least 1 academy
award, and the technology was so
new, we were making it up as we
went along most of the time. James
is a perfectionist, it really kept you
on your toes 24-7.”
One of Anthony’s great mentor and friend, Phillipe Rousellot
ASC,FSC asked Anthony to be his
second unit Director of Photography on “Larry Crowne,” directed
by Tom Hanks. Anthony was also
the second unit director of Photography for Phillipe on the well
received movie “Peacock.”

honored to participate in a week-long Soles4Souls
clothing drive. Soles4Souls works internationally
collecting and distributing shoes and clothing to
give relief to the victims of abject suffering and also
to support micro-enterprise efforts to eradicate
poverty.
Melissa Daniel Bain, Shoals resident and
friend of the Lindsey Fest, is the coordinator of
the organization’s Travel4Souls division, which
organizes teams traveling to international sites to
assist Soles4Souls in their relief efforts. Currently,
Melissa is organizing a trip to Guatemala for a team
comprised of 20 Shoals Area residents or natives,
who will spend 5 days in Chiquimula, Guatemala
washing feet, providing about 1000 pairs of shoes,
repairing a family’s roof, and working with a group
of malnourished orphans. Their partners in Guatemala are Josh and Jessica Byrd, also Shoals natives.
During the festival, collection boxes will be
located in the Communications Building lobby and
at our information table in the Guillot University
Center. Clothing of all types can be dropped off at
the festival locations or at various collection sites
across the Shoals. More information about Soles4Souls can be found at their web site, www.soles4souls.com. Good Luck Shoals Soles4Souls Team!

At the University of North Alabama, we’ve
been making history for almost 180 years.
And we’re not done yet. You see, we claim
a long list of impressive achievements (like
being the first state-chartered institution
in Alabama). But what we’re most excited
about is the history our students and alumni
are making right now. You don’t have to
look far to find them. Equipped with our

Despite all his previous

he hopes to continue learning
