BROOKVILLE Delivers First American Designed and Manufactured
Off-Wire Capable Streetcar to Dallas Area Rapid Transit
BROOKVILLE delivered the first of two off-wire capable Liberty Modern Streetcars to Dallas Area
Rapid Transit (DART) on Fri., March 20, 2015, marking the first-ever delivery of an American
designed and manufactured off-wire capable modern streetcar to a U.S. transit agency for the
downtown Union Station to Oak Cliff streetcar line, which opened on April 13, 2015.
The BROOKVILLE Liberty Modern Streetcars operate along a four-stop, 1.6-mile track that
provides access for citizens of Dallas’ urban core to the downtown Union Station hub, which
connects to DART’s Red/Blue/Green light rail lines and the Trinity Railway Express with service
to Fort Worth.
“The shipment of the first Liberty Modern Streetcar marks a major achievement in the 97-year
history of Brookville Equipment Corporation,” said BROOKVILLE President Marion Van Fosson.
“We are proud to partner with Dallas to deliver a streetcar vehicle that is both designed and
manufactured in the United States, and will add an element of efficiency and charm to one of the
most evolved and impressive transit infrastructures in the country.”
Utilizing an innovative battery energy storage system (ESS) to power the car’s four traction motors, the Liberty Modern Streetcars will travel approximately one mile of the 1.6-mile line without
the aid of an overhead catenary system (OCS) while crossing the Houston Street Viaduct.
Featuring three passenger compartments, the 66.5 foot-long, 8 foot-wide cars include over 70
percent low-floor area, providing accessible seating for passengers and automatic leveling
system that allows efficient and easy level boarding at station stops. The streetcars will run on
standard 56.5-inch track gauge and utilize BROOKVILLE’s industry-proven soft ride trucks
powered by four 99 kW AC traction motors while traveling at a maximum speed of 44 mph.
DART holds an option for two additional Liberty Modern Streetcars as part of a $9.4 million
contract agreed upon in March 2013.

How is BROOKVILLE finding talent in today’s competitive environment?

The President’s
Corner
By Marion Van Fosson
I want to thank all BROOKVILLE employees for all of their
hard work and dedication to the company over the last few
months. Your demonstrated dedication to the company, our
customers and your fellow employees are the exact reason
that I wanted to come to Brookville Equipment Corporation.
You are a fantastic team of people to work with!

During the first quarter of 2015, we have been very
successful at driving three major programs to completion,
including the Dallas Liberty Modern Streetcar. Delivery of
the DART Liberty Streetcar marks a major milestone for
Brookville Equipment Corporation’s new and modern
streetcar design.
While many in the industry and public marvel at the vehicle’s sleek design and innovative offwire technology, I marvel at the accomplishments of our talented BROOKVILLE team. Your
engineering, design and manufacturing skills shine through in the detailed design and
craftsmanship shown in the product we delivered to Dallas. While I was in Washington DC
the day the Streetcar shipped out to Dallas, my heart swelled with pride at the video of the
shipment from our facility. You all do amazing work!
Beyond this groundbreaking pilot project, we are looking forward to the opportunity to offer
our American designed and manufactured Liberty Modern Streetcar platform to other
cities across the United States. With our innovative vehicle solutions, we also offer top-notch
American-based service and support for our vehicles and a team that is not only proud of
their work, but of the opportunity to serve the great American cities where streetcar transit
once thrived and is now thriving again.
In addition to the delivery of the Dallas streetcars, we recently shipped two EPA Tier-4
CoGenerationTM gen-set locomotives to Central California Traction (CCT) and an 88-ton
diesel-hydraulic yard switching locomotive to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and
Intermediate Maintenance Facility – marking the completion of two major orders in our freight
locomotive division.
As the first quarter of 2015 brought with it the close of many major projects, we now look to
the future as we will rebuild 16 PCC streetcars for the San Francisco Municipal
Transportation Agency through our second progressive rebuild partnership and continue to
deliver the highest quality locomotive and rail-mounted haulage and transportation equipment
to the underground mining and tunneling industries.
It has already been one of the most exciting years in the history of Brookville Equipment
Corporation – and we are eager to continue developing, manufacturing, and delivering
equipment that exceeds our customers’ expectations across each industry we serve today
and in the future.
BROOKVILLE shipped three 27-ton MSHA-permissible tunneling locomotives to the WalshShea Corridor Constructors for use on the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor Tunnel Project in
Los Angeles. By design, the locomotives will reduce the risk of explosion due to geological
conditions that may host the presence of methane and other combustible gases. Cal-OSHA
has classified the tunnel drives on this project “gassy”, mandating the use of MSHA permissible
locomotives.
“Brookville was selected based on past performance, simplicity of operation and diagnostics,
their ability to communicate locally with MSHA, and knowing we would be dealing with the good
people of Brookville, PA, U.S.A,” said Walsh-Shea Corridor Constructors Tunnel Construction
Manager David Girard, P.E.

BROOKVILLE Ships Two Tier-4 CoGenerationTM
Locomotives to Central California Traction
BROOKVILLE recently shipped two EPA Tier-4 BL12CG
CoGenerationTM low-emissions switchers to Central California Traction (CCT), which will be utilized for freight haulage
applications along the operator’s two short line rail corridors,
including the Stockton Public Belt Railroad Network (55.9
miles) and the Central Valley Branch (14.9 miles) with service
from Stockton, Calif., to Lodi and Sacramento, Calif.
Each of the two 132-ton BL12CG locomotives features twin
Cummins 600hp six-cylinder engines that comply with EPA
Tier-4 emissions regulations and are mated to
independent three-phase Marathon alternators. The
BL12CGs feature a wide cab design with a
sideways-stationed operator control stand for efficient
multi-directional operation, and BROOKVILLE’s heavy-duty
FRA-crashworthy welded frame.
“BROOKVILLE’s Tier-4 CoGeneration locomotives minimize environmental impact without sacrificing the power
and performance associated with single-engine packages,”
said BROOKVILLE Director of Sales Chris Rhoades. “These
locomotives are a modern solution that will meet the needs
of what has been one of the most well-operated short line
railroads in the United States since 1905.”
The BL12CGs offer independent state-of-the-art locomotive
control systems with a touch-screen interface and instant
diagnostics to improve fuel efficiency and enhance traction
and engine control. Featuring CCT’s signature deep red
finish and white decaling, the BL12CGs include a proven
26L locomotive air brake system, automatic engine start and
stop (AESS) to reduce idling times, and D78 traction motors
mounted on each axle of the BROOKVILLE-rebuilt two-axle
trucks.

departure for Central California Traction in Stockton, Calif. CCT 1201 and CCT 1202 mark the second and third gen-set
locomotives that BROOKVILLE has delivered to the California-based short line railroad.
“CCT has had great results with CCT 2101, the Tier-3 three-engine BL21CG locomotive, seeing a 53% reduction in fuel use, and CCT has had great customer support by all the team at BROOKVILLE with our current
engine and the building of these two locomotives,” said CCT General Manager Dave Buccolo. “BROOKVILLE
has provided CCT with world class service and cutting edge technology to allow CCT to save more fuel and
eliminate downtime.”
The BL12CG locomotives mark BROOKVILLE’s second CoGeneration order completion for CCT, which purchased a BL21CG 2100hp three-engine gen-set locomotive in 2012.
