Younstown, had a dream in
which she was inspired, in the midst of a turbulent society, to provide
stability and security for women and children and to call them to their
fullest potential. To realize that dream, she also had a promise: “Jesus
Christ will enlighten you about what you have
to do.” This “dream” and “promise” is what
the Ursuline Sisters, Beatitude House board,
staff, benefactors, women and children
celebrate during the 20th anniversary of its
foundation.
The same “dream” and “promise” of Saint
Angela Merici had an abiding presence in the
life of the founder of Beatitude House,
Ursuline Sister Margaret Scheetz.

Where did her “dream” and “promise” of
Beatitude House begin? In 1990, at a small
college restaurant at Kent State University,
Ursuline Sister Mary O’Leary, then our
community director of finance and Sister
Sr. Margaret Scheetz
Nancy Dawson, general superior, met Sister
Margaret for lunch. Sister Margaret was completing
a master’s degree in computer science. The sisters
asked Margaret, “What would you really like to do
with your future?” Sister Margaret answered, “I would like to work with
poor women and children who are homeless.” The sisters confidently
responded, “Then do it!” And she did! The dream of Saint Angela and the
promise that Jesus would “tell her what to do” started to take form. After
weeks of scouting multiple sites, countless hours of building repair and
renovation and preparing each apartment with furnishings, Beatitude House
opened its first transitional housing facility to four homeless women with
children in July 1991 with Ursuline Sister Margaret Scheetz as its first
executive director.

Today, the “dream” and “promise” of Saint Angela and
Sister Margaret continues. The program has grown
from one small building on the corner of Lora and Fifth
avenues in Youngstown to 12 apartments in
Youngstown, 13 in Warren and now, 10 apartments to
open in Ashtabula County. Once again, all those
compassionate hearts who have in any way
contributed to the “dream” in the past are assured of
the “promise” that “Jesus Christ will enlighten each of
us and tell us what to do next” when we step into the
21st year of service.
In the name of all the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, I
thank all those who are part of the Beatitude House
family. The role that each person plays enhances the
“dream” and “promise” of a society where all will be
treated with dignity and justice, especially women and
children, and where all will be enabled to develop
their God-given gifts for the service of others.
Let each day of the Anniversary Year be filled with the
above “dreams” and “promises”.
Beatitude
House
formally announced
plans to expand its
services
into
Ashtabula County at a press conference held Dec. 3,
2010. A transitional housing facility is set to open at
the site of the former St. Joseph Elementary School
on Lake Avenue in Ashtabula. The school, vacant for
nearly 20 years, will undergo a $1 million renovation
project that will turn it into a 10-unit housing
complex for disadvantaged women and their
children. Plans also include office space, a meeting
room and playroom.
Transforming Lives in Ashtabula
Funding for the expansion has begun to be secured
with a $500,000 federal home grant from Farmer's
National Bank. The Frank and Pearl Gelbman
Foundation at Huntington National Bank and the
Ashtabula Foundation have each donated $50,000,
while Northwest Savings Banks has contributed
$5,000. Davis International, a contractor based in
Youngstown OH has offered a $145,000 in-kind gift.
Last Spring, Kayla Sawhill, a seventh grader
at Springfield Intermediate School in New
Middletown, Ohio, was selected to
participate in the People to People Student
Ambassador Program.
The remaining funding will
come
from
private
donations.
Renovations are expected to begin in early 2011 with
families
scheduled
to move
in by the
fall.

Sawhill, a nearly
straight A student,
said her pastor and
teachers
wrote
letters
of
recommendation
for her to attend.
This past summer,
while
visiting
Australia, the group, including Sawhill, toured
museums, learned how a ranch operates and swam
in the Great Barrier Reef. For Sawhill the Great
Barrier Reef was the highlight of the trip. “It was
amazing to see, the coral is a beautiful bright white,”
she said.
People to People Student Ambassadors holds a
variety of fundraisers throughout the year to raise
the funds for their trips. Sawhill is looking forward
to traveling throughout Europe next year, providing
she can raise enough money. In addition to
experiencing new cultures and meeting new people
Sawhill said she is most proud of the fact that she is
the only student in her school who was selected to
go. In fact, she was one of only 48 students chosen
from across the United States!
Kayla and her mother are part of Beatitude House
Permanent Supportive Housing program.
The
program provides support for mothers with a
disability that make it difficult for them to obtain and
maintain employment.

Carol Shepherd, a former Beatitude House client
looks back on the two years she spent at Beatitude
House
as
the
most
peaceful

years of her
life. It was
during that time that Carol was able to focus on
getting her life in order. Because of what Carol
learned about herself as well as the help she
received when under the wing of Beatitude House
Carol is doing well today. While she is currently selfemployed as a housekeeper and nanny, she
anticipates she will soon be employed by Beatitude
House Green Clean.
A Look Back
Carol came to Beatitude House more than a decade
ago, as a woman in her 40s with two school-age
daughters. She was burdened by a troubled
marriage and a husband who was involved with
drugs. Carol said she initially thought she was too
old to be helped by the programs at Beatitude
House. She thought the program was for younger
women, that she was too old to make a change in
her life. She soon learned differently. Carol is
grateful to the nuns – especially Sister Margaret, the
founder of Beatitude House – who provided her with
help and guidance. Through Beatitude House’s
counseling services, Carol realized she should not
blame herself for the problems with her marriage.
She learned she had the ability to make positive
changes to better in life.
Beatitude House also helped Carol find a job and put
her on the path to financial independence. Despite
not considering herself “school material,” Carol
values education. She is currently taking classes at
Eastern Gateway Community College with the hope
of
getting
an
associate’s degree in
medical records. Carol
emphasized the value
of education for her
two daughters. As a
result one now works
at Eastern Gateway
and the other is a
second grade teacher
in the Dublin, Ohio,
school system.

Because of the support
Carol received from Beatitude House, she has
referred several women to the program when they
felt they had no place to turn. Carol has the
following advice to all women about getting help in
general and about Beatitude House in particular:
“Give it a chance. Don’t shoot it down because you
think you are at an age where no one can tell you
what to do,” she said. Carol is only one woman who
has benefitted from giving Beatitude House a chance
to help her change her life.

the holidays at Beatitude House very special.
The Christmas season began with a food donation from the Interact Club of
Ursuline High School. The Interact Club is a service club taking part in projects
related to today’s critical issues, such as hunger, the environment and illiteracy.
Families received turkeys and trimmings to make a delicious Thanksgiving dinner,
as well as macaroni and cheese, pasta and sauce, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, and a
variety of canned fruits and vegetables.

Throughout the month families at A House of Blessing in
Warren and in Youngstown also attended parties in their honor
at The Newman Center at Youngstown
State University, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Parish in Youngstown and Valley Electric
in Girard, Ohio. The women and children
took part in singing Christmas carols at
some parties, while at others they had
fun decorating Christmas cookies, as well
as visiting with Santa Claus. At each party
families enjoyed dinner and were
presented with Christmas gifts.

the Annual Beatitude
House/Habitat for
Humanity Christmas
Concert at St. Columba
Cathedral in Youngstown.

Selecting gifts for mom
Santa’s Workshop was held in both Warren and Youngstown
to provide the children with an opportunity to “shop” for
Christmas gifts for their mothers and siblings. Volunteers
from Christ Episcopal Church sponsored the workshop in
Warren. The volunteers collected gifts, set up the store and
helped the children shop.

This year, the residents of A House of Blessing in Warren held a door
decorating contest to spread holiday cheer. Each of the residents designed
and decorated their apartment doors in whatever theme they
chose. Of course, the children had their input and, in some cases,
helped with the decorating.
Wrapping up their gifts
The Lionesses Club of Austintown, the feminine arm of the
international Lions organization, hosted the women attending The
Potter’s Wheel at a luncheon, giving them a chance to celebrate
the season.
Families at A House of Blessing in Youngstown were treated to a
bowling party on December 23 at Camelot Lanes in
Boardman. The group enjoyed pizza, pop and an afternoon of
bowling.

Below is a brief explanation of the various ways you can assist Beatitude House financially.
We encourage you to contact a financial advisor for complete tax advantage information.
Gift Annuities— Contribute funds or assets to Beatitude House; you receive fixed annuity
payments for the
rest of your life. You receive immediate income tax deduction for a portion of the gift and a portion of each
annuity payment is treated as a tax-free return of the investment. The rest of the gift is left to Beatitude House .
Charitable Remainder Trusts—Designate Beatitude House as a beneficiary and receive
income from a
trust for your lifetime, or for a period of years not to exceed 20. At the end of that time, the balance of the trust
is transferred to Beatitude House. You take a charitable deduction for a portion of the gift you make to the trust
in the year the trust is formed.
Charitable Lead Trusts—Designate Beatitude House to receive a regular, fixed amount from a
trust for
a specified time period, or the lifetime of a designated person. At the end of that time period, the remainder of
the trust passes to your designated heirs or Beatitude House.
Charitable Bequests—The term "charitable bequest" is used to describe anything you give or
leave to
charity from your estate through a will or a revocable inter vivos ("living") trust. You can set aside a specific dollar
amount, leave a percentage of your estate, or leave any assets left over after your family has been provided for.
Beneficiary Designation—Designate Beatitude House as the beneficiary of your life insurance or
retirement assets, you can enjoy some flexibility in your charitable giving, as well as certain tax advantages.
Beatitude House will receive the specified assets upon your death.
