munich – royal splendors and the strife for liberty
MUNICH – ROYAL SPLENDORS AND THE STRIFE FOR LIBERTY Munich, capital of Bavaria, has a lot to offer: art and architecture, and a history of tensions between power and resistance. The magnificent buildings commissioned by the Bavarian kings as well as casual inns and breweries dominate the urban cityscape. One also finds reminiscences of the Nazi regime (and the resistance movement against it) as well as a Bohemian flair in the artists’ district of Schwabing. A two-days excursion takes you to the picturesque Alpine town of Ettal. This will be our starting point for trips to the fairy-tale castels Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, and here we will learn about the brewery secrets of the Ettal monks. One of the best times to visit Munich is December. The city and the churches are festively decorated. Have a drink of mulled wine at one of the many stalls of the Christmas market, and marvel at the craftsmanship of Bavarian artisans in the Christmas decorations sold here.
