Today the emphasis is on quality, says Mr. Beckstrom, different species of wood were used on each floor: fir, white

“We have also supplied several winery doors in Napa that

Homeowners are also finding bigger is better. “A few years glass, bamboo glass, and seedy glass (patterned glass)

Now craftsmen-style doors are real popular, especially in
this area,” he says. “We sell a lot of doors up in Tahoe. They
love mahogany and alder (wood).”
Homeowners, especially those with imposing houses,
want a door that is rich-looking, not garish. They are looking
to make a statement. After all, “The thing you see first is the
front door,” he says.
An Oregon coast resident wanted a door with glass
panels tinted blue to resemble waves. An Asian dragon
theme was carried out in carvings on entry doors and in
etchings on a second pair of doors in the front entry in
another home. Many costly entry ways feature panels of
beveled leaded glass. The price tag on an elaborate entry
can easily reach $20,000.
Mr. Beckstrom represents Summit Woodworking
Mill in Oregon. “It started out as two guys working in
a garage outside their house, now they have 15 employees.” A custom door usually takes eight to 10 weeks from
order to installation.
Beckstrom & Co. moved from San Mateo to Menlo Park
in 1960. Mr. Beckstrom started working for the company,
founded by his father, the late John Beckstrom, in 1968.

Wikia.com launches travel site
By Sean Howell
Special to the Almanac
T
he creators of Menlo
Park-based Wikia.com
have launched a new
“wiki” for travelers to share
information about places
they’ve visited.
World.wikia.com differs
from traditional travel guides
in that users can create and
edit its content, site founder
Bill Kaufman said. Visitors to
the site can edit information
on any page they wish, or create new pages to address a topic
that hasn’t yet been covered.
It also has the advantages
of being free and containing
updated information contributed by a number of users, Mr.
Kaufman said.
World.wikia.com is one of
over 1,500 Web sites based
on Wikia.com. Each “wiki”
addresses a specific topic, ranging from travel to specific TV
shows to academic fields.
It was founded by James
Wales, who also created Wiki-
pedia.com, an encyclopedic
collection of single articles.
Adaptable travel guide
World.wikia.com is made up of
some 1,000 pages edited by over
50 users, Mr. Kaufman said.
He likened World.wikia.com
to a home page from which users
can browse through geographic
regions and learn a wide variety
of information about each place.
The site also allows users to provide tips about traveling to niche
audiences, such as travelers with
pets and children, or lesbian and
gay travelers.
“The community will determine which direction these articles and projects will go, but the
purpose of the wiki is to focus on
anything a traveler would find
relevant,” Mr. Kaufman said.
The home page for San Francisco, for instance, features
photos of the city, information
about politics and transportation, lists of local schools and
newspapers, and brief descriptions of other Bay Area cities.
It also contains a list of recent
and upcoming events.
However, the site is far from
complete. The Golden Gate
Bridge is the only listing under
“Bay Area Landmarks,” and
currently there are no entries
for concert venues, bars or
nightclubs.
Your place for fitness, fun, and family.

That, Mr. Kaufman said, is
where users come in. Before
the site can become a viable
source for travelers, it will need
help from people who have
visited or live in the cities listed
on the page.
“At this point, there are lots
of holes in the content,” Mr.
Kaufman said. “But that’s part
of the attraction for some who
want to be the first to add content to a wiki.”
Because the project is in the
early stages of development,
users can list pages that need
work on the home page, as well
as the cities that they found to
be most complete.

Bob Beckstrom is a graduate of
Menlo-Atherton High School,
class of 1960, and president of
the Menlo-Atherton Alumni
Association. After graduating
from Humboldt State University, he worked for United Air
Lines for a few years.
“My dad asked me to watch
the store for him while he had a
cataract operation. I never left. I
hope Rob will do the same.”
Rob is his son, who joined
the firm in 2003. “I needed his
computer savvy,” says his dad.
Father and son run a two-man
office, located on the second
floor of 648 Menlo Ave. in
downtown Menlo Park.
All three of the Beckstrom
children, Rob, Lori and Casey,
are M-A graduates. Bob and his
wife, Mary, live in Menlo Oaks.
Ms. Beckstrom is a teacher at
Laurel School.
Mr. Beckstrom is used to
people making jokes about The
Doors, asking him if he is a fan
of the late singer, Jim Morrison.
He has his own little joke. At the
old Town Club, once the hangout for Menlo Park movers and
shakers, he sometimes contributed the door prize. It was, of
course, a door, courtesy of Beckstrom & Co.

‘M Butterfly’ returns to TheatreWorks
“M Butterfly,” a Tony award-winning drama
by David Henry Hwang, returns to the TheatreWorks stage on August 23 for a four-week run
ending September 17.
The production, which will be directed by
TheatreWorks Artistic Director Robert Kelley,
will be staged at the Mountain View Center for
the Performing Arts. Mr. Kelley directed the
theater company’s first production of the play in
1992 — a staging that won wide critical acclaim
and enthusiastic audiences.
Francis Jue will return to the role of Song Liling, for which he won several awards during the
1992 run. Mark Capri reprises his portrayal of
Rene Gallimard.
“M Butterfly” — described by TheatreWorks as
a “passionate deconstruction of Puccini’s classic
Italian opera ‘Madame Butterfly’” — is based
on the true story of a French diplomat who had
an affair with a Chinese opera star whom he
believed to be a woman. The opera star not only
turned out to be a man, but a spy as well.
Tickets are $20-$55. They may be reserved by
calling 903-6000; or by visiting theatreworks.org.
The theater is at 500 Castro St. in downtown
Mountain View.
