Last June 14 and 15, 2012, SLI has
passed the audit for Hazard Analysis
Critical Control Point (HACCP) Certification conducted by TUV SUD Philippines which marks another milestone
for SLI. Now, Sydenham Laboratories
can assure all the clients that food
supplements and other related
pharmaceutical products produced
are of highest quality with the enforcement of food safety measures
using HACCP principles by reducing
potential hazards all throughout the
supply chain.
A forerunner to HACCP was developed in the form of production
process monitoring during World
War II because traditional "end of
the pipe" testing was not an efficient
way to identify artillery shells that
would not explode. HACCP itself was
conceived in the 1960s when the US
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) asked Pillsbury to
design and manufacture the first foods
for space flights. Since then, HACCP has
been recognized internationally as a logical tool for adapting traditional inspection
methods to a modern, science-based, food
safety system.
The HACCP system is a logical, scientific
system that can control safety problems in
food production. HACCP is now being
adopted worldwide. It works by controlling
food safety hazards throughout the proc-
ess. The hazards can be biological, chemical, or physical.
When a company adopts HACCP, it puts
controls in place at each point in the production system where safety problems
could occur from biological, chemical, or
physical hazards. To start a HACCP system, a company must first write a HACCP
plan. This article gives an overview on
developing a HACCP plan in five preparatory steps and then the seven HACCP
principles.
The five preliminary steps in making a
HACCP plan are:
1. Bring together your HACCP

After a three year break, newSLInk
is back in print! Since the last issue
of our newsletter, the company has
achieved new milestones and undergone many changes --- this issue
will focus on some of those significant events.
In “President‘s Notes”, MAC talks
about our 40th Anniversary Celebration and what it means to all of us.
There is also an article that spotlights how SLI continuously works
toward world-class quality. With SLI
putting much value on its customers, it is only but fitting to talk
about this year’s Customers Day
3. Identify the intended use and consumers of the food.
The product descriptions also contain details regarding the product labeling, methods of preservation and
other special instructions.
4. Develop a process flow diagram. Each type of dosage form has its process flow diagram and this was
used for the identification of potential hazards and
provision of respective pre-requisite programs (PRPs)
and control points. However, it was very important
that the process flow being analyzed start from the
purchase of starting materials and end in the finished
goods delivery to customers.
5. Verify the diagram in the operation it is meant to
represent. Actual observation of the process was done
by the HACCP Team to verify if indeed the PRPs and
control points are implemented effectively.
Applying the seven HACCP principles make up the
major steps to writing a HACCP plan. They are:
1. Conduct a hazard analysis.
2. Identify critical control points.
3. Establish critical limits for each critical control
point.
4. Establish monitoring procedures.
5. Establish corrective actions.
6. Establish recordkeeping procedures.
7. Establish verification procedures.
Employing a HACCP-system demonstrates our commitment to proactively manage food safety. It also
allows SLI to utilize its technical and operational
resources effectively and efficiently thus resulting to
increased confidence in our products quality from
both customers and within our organization.
We should all remember that the certifications of SLI
such as GMP, ISO 9001 and HACCP would matter
significantly if everyone is committed to cooperate
and actively participate in the implementation of
these standards.

Changing colors doesn’t have to be viewed
as entirely dismantling the original vision of
the organization but merely invoking a new

“chemical” manufacturing company, nevertheless it would be commendable for anyone in
the industry to rise up
and be counted.
The past decades bear

population growth, human vanity but more

had one way or the other contributed immensely in the degradation of the global
environment. It is sad to think that as the

“Think—Learning in Action @ SLI”
We are faced with the demand of time
compression, do more to be competitive
and yet be excellent in execution. It is
therefore imperative that we as individuals and as a group learning and adaptive
to the changing time. We want to excel in
life, so, the time to ‘think & learn’ is now.
The pressure point of today is to be fast
and responsive in action. Deliberation,
assessment and learning to continuously
improve results are always more an afterthought rather than at the front end of
every action. “Time Boundaries” are nonexpandable yet we want to jam or do
many things quickly in that limited envelope of time no matter how targeted or
focused we are to an objective.
Thinking is the calling of our mind forward to a mental process of pondering,
deliberating and assessing things by one’s
-self (individual thinking) or with others
(group thinking). Every awakening mental, emotional and physical action should
be preceded with some thinking. It might
even be answering quickly the questions
what, why, where/when/who and how??
In SLI, it is time we identify our individual
and/or group environment that can harbor
the thinking process. Individually, this
could be the point of awakening as we
start our day; ‘the moment’ before any
action or reaction on our part; could be the
luxury or necessity of our personal
‘solitude’ in our own prayer room or personal diary writing; report writing in work
or project status; even while commuting to
our point of destination; or even taking a
pause while reading and taking opportunity to think. For groups, this could be
meeting such as update / status meetings;
project-tasked oriented or problem solving
meetings; a highly structured planning
meeting that requires individual and collective thinking. Many opportunities!!
Our challenge in SLI as we move our Organization into the future is to encourage
the process of thinking. As an individual,
allowing emotional release; moving oneself beyond a given barrier(+ or -); curiosity
allowing to explore and know more. In a
group to be attentive and a good listener;
participative by asking questions; treating
each other with 360 degrees of respect,
appreciation and constructive criticism;
balancing the freedom of time and
urgency for action allowing diversity.
There have been studies and writings on Human Dynamics: Mental;
Emotional & Physical aspects. I
contend that thinking influences the
mental, the emotional and physical
action of organization that can
create an opportunity for excellence
in action.
Thinking is a necessary commodity
that has been taken for granted. It is
time we harness it back to being in
the forefront of all our and any of
our action in the company.

conducted its two day– First Aid Training
last March 27-28, 2012 for Industrial
Employees , wherein 20 employees from
SLI attended.
Conducted by Philippine National Red

and Mr. Rommel G. Tubig who discussed
the basic principles of Red Cross, first-aid
on common medical emergencies, splinting , bandaging and emergency transfer.

SLI has given away a leather purse to its
customers with an embossed company logo
during the 10th Customers’ day last April 26,
2012 at the Bellevue Hotel in Alabang,
Muntinlupa City.

The 40th Anniversary celebration provides
the perfect opportunity to engage in designing the new SLI logo as we breathe a
new life into it by updating some changes
and still retain the “original feeling” of our
logo. The new logo has been unveiled
during the 10th Customers’ Day last April 26,
2012. From a company that is known on its
by-line “Good Medicines: We Make it for
You” has now evolved to “Good Medicines
Made – Great Solutions Delivered”.

A good design is very important for a website as it represents the outlook of a company. If a website is attractive enough it can

its corporate website in celebration of its

colours, a clean uncluttered design and
images with featured content focusing on

SLI 40Th Anniversary RED RAFFLE
As we end our year-long celebration of our
40th Anniversary, a grand raffle of gifts and
prizes will be given away exclusively for SLI
employees for their continued support and
dedication in reaching this important
milestone in the company. Prizes will be all
in red such as foldable bags, USB flash
drive, sports bag and jackets will be on
raffle and premium prizes like MP3 players,

thrilled up!
It has been an eventful year-long celebration of SLI as we approach the end of our
40th Anniversary. But as they say “Life
begins at 40”, we shall continue to grow
and improve more on the way we do

This year's company summer outing brought
SLI Employees together at the STILTS Beach
Resort in Calatagan, Batangas last May 7,
2012.
The heat was truly on as the employees swam
on the beach while the others got a chance to
unwind and build camaraderie among employees. It got the highest attendance for SLI
Summer Outing, since 90% of the employees
attended this activity.
What made the event more exciting is the Mr.
& Ms. SLI 40th year , where chosen employees strutted in their

winners for the Mr. and Ms. SLI 2012 were Jeprey
Blas (Production) and Annalyn Ramirez
(SLIKChem) who both received special prizes from
Sydenham Pharmaceutical, Inc's – FEEL GOOD
LACTIUM, the event sponsor.
All in all, the day was filled with enjoyment,
laughter and lots of fun. Everyone can’t wait for
the next summer outing to come!
